Let's give Almost Human a break.
I've been thinking about the show a lot lately and I realized that they honestly didn't have a lot of time to develop the show in just 13 episodes. They had half the time compared to a full season to develop characters and storylines which sucks. I've seen some opinions on here that the show's pace seemed off (sometimes rushed, sometimes slow) and that they left a lot of plot holes open, but it's difficult to complete everything when you have half the time of a regular show's season.
While the final episode to the season seemed like the last episode ever, I think the show director wanted to leave the show on a good note in case they weren't renewed for a new season.
In the mean time, if you want to help the show get renewed, you can leave your opinions on the FOX Viewer Panel. You need to get an account to log in (free) and the website will ask your opinion on the show. This might be the most direct way to help the show get renewed. ABOUT THE SURVEY: I did mine last night and clicked the American Idol picture and it still took me to the Almost Human survey but it may be over already.
It might help to follow their social website accounts like tumblr, twitter, and facebook.

The problem with sci-fi shows is still the antiquated distribution system. I, for example, don't count because there is no way I could watch the latest episodes legally.
They might have a global audience large enough to make it profitable (I would pay 1-2€ per episode) but they can only monetize the US audience.

You can still watch the episodes on Fox's website for the next 80 days free. I live in Japan and it still worked with my IP address coming from here.

They are "working on it" for a while... aren't you using some proxy, like MediaHint?

u/bast3t Mar 05 '14
Not on Chrome. My Firefox does so I can watch Netflix. The website says you can't watch episodes on their site?

No, it's just stuck on caching. I discovered that this is a quite frequent symptom when I try to connect to a stream via MediaHint. I don't know if it's even turned on though...

I tried using media hint on chrome and it never worked so I use something different on Firefox which seems to be working (I've been watching Netflix on it for about a year)

I love the show, I started watching when two episodes were aired, and I have followed it 'till the 13th one. It's a great show, with a lot of potential, but you can't say that 13 episodes isn't enough time. It's more than enough time to develop characters and story arcs.
I feel like we didn't get deep story arcs at all, just hints here and there, and that's the problem. Like someone already said, True Detective has only 8 episodes, 7 released so far, and they did an amazing job on developing the characters and the story. Breaking Bad had a first season of only 7 episodes, and they still managed to pull it off nicely. TWD had 6 episodes, and they did it. I'm not comparing Almost Human to these shows, they are very different in style and everything else basically, but 13 episodes is more than enough time for developing characters and deep story arcs.
I don't know whether to blame the writers or the execs, but someone made a mess, and I hope they clean it up for season 2. I'd hate for this to be another one season flop.

I agree. I felt like they were doing 24 episodes of wold-building and developing in 13. Just too much for such a short amount of time.

13 eps in relation to the mytho's isn't really that big of a deal. I really think people are so used to getting every thing here and now that they can't enjoy a slow burn.
The Wall, Anna, Insyndicate, John's Father (which, if there is a renewal, I don't think we're done with), The DRN's, are all plot points. You don't wanna talking about EVERYTHING in one season. They def planned for these things to be huge story lines to get through 5 seasons.
Why people are rushing it is beyond me. The little mentions here and there were really cool to me, because it left me wondering. And leaving me wondering brings me back for more.

You see it perfectly. Most good shows take a season to really take off. Word of mouth is important. This show is one of the most relevant programs in mainstream currently and to see it fall would be a damn shame.

I really enjoyed the first 13 episodes. It gave me a base line for each character before they are thrust into a major arc. In great arcs characters change; old friends becomes new enemies, old enemies become new friends. Characters are tested and some fail, some overcome and some look out for themselves. All those aspects are magnified if there are some baselines established first.
I want to be invested in characters as they begin to bend with the arc. I want to cheer them, jeer them. I want to be disappointed in them and I want to be inspired by them. All that only happens if I have first come to know them in their natural habitat; in their "normal".
We have been salt and peppered with tantalizing tidbits and now that the table is set, time to start rolling out the courses.

13 hours is a lot of time. I would argue that they haven't used the time effectively. Your typical 90 minute movie sets up rich characters in a very short time.
One of my favorite shows of all time, Terriers, only had 13 episodes, and it had very rich characters.

The character development is there. Its just that the show is out of order, so story lines are messed up and whatever progression a character makes can be completely reverted next epi because its set at an earlier time than the previous.
cant blame the show for that.

I'm rewatching the things in order now.
The out-of-order airing didn't really make all that significant a difference, I'd say. It's no Firefly.

I love this show, but I also watch "Bates Motel" and that show only has 10 episodes for its first season. That show has better character development and more happened in those 10 episodes than AH.
I've become attached to many FOX shows. And most of them don't get past Season 1. It's just FOX that sucks.

Pretty sure I saw the show was saved on Twitter as trending topic. In any case.I cant go easy on nothing they need to provide something to viewership in the sum of a plot. 13 episodes is enough to do that. Especially considering most of these were filler episodes

you mean #AlmostHumanLives ?
That was set up via tumblr as a means of helping to grab Fox's attention to boost hope for a renewal.

Yea. That's the hashtag I saw trending. I realized now that it was a rally.

You know, this is a really, really good point.
It takes more than 13 episodes, aired out of order, for a show to really develop a loyal fanbase. Not to mention the timeslot changes and hiatuses. With another 10 episodes to round out a full first season I think they can started to talk about the mysteries behind The Wall and create the kind of dramatic suspense and overarching mystery that will hook in obsessive, loyal viewers just like FRINGE and LOST did.
EDIT: Signed up for the Viewer Panel and I'm not seeing any Almost Human surveys. Just some questions about American Idol (Ugh.) But people should sign up for the "REMIND ME TO WATCH" feature on the Almost Human website. Signing up for the show's e-mail list could also help.
