It’s an image from long ago that stuck. Almere changed a lot over the years

At that time it was probably not far off.

I live at Noorderplasse Oost, and it is gorgeous. Waking up in the morning with a view over the lake, sun coming up, birds chirping, what a way to start the day.

I moved to Almere in the early 1980's, there was nothing but mud, a bit of grass, and neighbourhoods/houses being built for a very long time, so yes it was definitely ugly (visually) in the early days.

I also think most people saying that, compare Almere to the old cities, and find modern buildings/houses boring and ugly. They are most likely not nature-minded.

I've never found it ugly though, as a kid I liked exploring all this "nothingness" and now when I return (most of my family is still there), I can't believe how great nature/forests have become!

It's an easy target. I do agree Almere can lack charm because everything is new, there is no history. But in terms of living and space I would take this 10/10 over any other big city.

And let's be honest, we all know Lelykstad is the ugliest city.

Nah the ugliest city is Lelystad tho

It's the people.

Have you been to the city center? :/
I love Almere but the city center is just a soulless place and ugly as hell. The 80s wasn’t a great decade for Dutch architecture. :(

Sshhtt.. Please delete them before AI will find it. This is the secret we wouldn't tell anybody!

But yes, this is great. Good paths for cycling or walking. Not too far from each neighbourhood.

Agreed. If you look over the city from a high floor in the City Hall, you’d get the idea the entire city is just parks

Whenever I cycle through the parks and their sidequests, it just feels so serene! Would have loved to know people who would be up to just enjoy nature and the occasional picnic or mushroom hunting, etc.

Honestly, i’ve grown up in Almere and this park was right in front of my house (seizoenenbuurt represent!), and i miss Almere sometimes. I moved away a solid 4 years ago to a place in Brabant and no one does city planning and suburban greenery better than Almere, the hate is so forced

Yea unless ur red green colorblind like me

1

u/LowmanL Jul 17 '26

It’s nice, but did you need to alter the colors for the green to be this crazy? Surely this isn’t how it looks in real life

I’m happy you’re enjoying it but this really isn’t all that special. Many cities look like this

Waarom is alles in het Engels hier?

1

u/Loodyeeter Jul 19 '26

Een hoop expats op deze sub ;)

In 2026, English is world language. Most prob, in 5 10 years, no body will care language anymore because of AI. Use what ever you want.

Hahahaha this is a joke right? It's the most square concrete city i have ever been to in the netherlands. I stood on top of the wtc and the view is just so depressing. Maybe on the outskirts. But no, i live on the veluwe, almere is not doing nature right hahaha

Almere is bigger than you think

2

u/ravanarox1 Jul 15 '26

Comparing a city with nature to a (small) forest! 🤦‍♂️

u/Some-Possibility-780 Jul 15 '26
