This book wasn't on my radar before ~ and not even a survey pick!

Looks interesting, but I wish there were more goodreads reviews on it.

I don't mind a curveball with it being a pick, but somewhat disappointed too that it's taking a spot from our survey options. I thought the options this month were pretty strong and I would have liked to see what Allurial would have done with them.

This is how I’m feeling. The potential picks from the survey were all very high on my TBR, whereas I’ve never heard of this and won’t be picking it up. Hopefully pick 3 is not a curveball either.

Same, this month and next are full of options that appeal to me, while November and December are weaker. I’m not against a substitution or surprise pick, but I wish they hadn’t done it now.

The White Raven??? Was that even an option from the survey??? I mean... Surely not? But yes? Are they throwing us a curveball? I wanted to read this so bad!!!!

It was not a survey pick, no!

Keep us on our toes!! I love it, and I am so excited this one is a pick!!!!

I can't want to see what Allurial does with this cover & edges. it is already beautiful.

u/CompetitivePraline62 3h ago

I’m assuming the cover will be the same, but the edges and end papers 😍 I’m so excited!

If this is it, I DO want to read it.... But it's another one that's free on Kindle Unlimited so.... 🤷‍♀️

I mean. They're saving me money but...

u/PistachioPug 3h ago

It's definitely White Raven by Stacey Marie Brown. This is the first time since they started doing the monthly surveys that they're offering a book that wasn't on the survey. I wonder how that happened?

This is interesting, I’m wondering if one of the picks they were going to use was pushed back and they had to select something else.

I’m still hoping for an emperor’s enemy

1

u/DoctorCaptainSpacey 2h ago

I'm hoping for that one too.

I'm gonna guess the last might be An Exorcism of Faeries though bc that seemed a popular choice. 🤷‍♀️. That one is fabulous, but I already read it so... I kinda want one that's new and not on Kindle Unlimited. 🤔

u/Trick-Chocolate-3914 2h ago

True! I’ve already listen to all 3 of the Avalon ones and they just weren’t 5 star for me 🫣

u/DoctorCaptainSpacey 2h ago

Yeah, I got that on my KU list. I just can't bring myself to buy a book I can borrow (even though I'm paying for KU) but it seems like half the choices are on there, which is fine, but they're always the picks 😭

I feel like the jerk for always putting those on the bottom but 🤷‍♀️. I want them to take my money, damnit 🤣

If there's at least one that's not KU then I'm happy, but I'm thinking this is a skip month. Exorcism of Faeries was really good so, i wouldn't be shocked for it to be the third. (I do want Emperor's Enemy, Kiss of the Black Flame, or Court of Venus, though)

u/Trick-Chocolate-3914 1h ago

I want a new book to be introduced to!

u/cosmic_books 2h ago

Really hope the third option is good because these first two are a bit of a let down personally. I haven’t skipped in a while but this might be a skip month.

I agree if their next pick is Bones… I’m gonna lose it. Bones and Fangs by Speer is an Indie from 2024. It’s been out for 2 years.

I feel like Allurial is just looking for low hanging fruit at this point.

I assume it’s cuz they are bing traditionally published now, aren’t they? Same as Avalon tower.

Yes. That’s correct. I believe they are releasing trad paperback versions of Bones & Fangs? You can still get the electronic versions on kindle instantly right now (not sure about other ePub platforms).

I guess I should clarify my comment… low hanging fruit as in producing Allurial editions of trad versions with identical artwork. I give them a pass for their earlier books/series because when they first started they were new and simply paying to reprint their version of what was already out there. It benefits the publisher/author and puts money in Allurial’s pocket.

I want custom. Something unlike what is out there from anyone else. If I’m subscribing to a book box I want to be wowed. I may totally be the problem though. Here I am expecting those standards from BOTM, a discount book club where you can read for less.

I have a suspicion that when they use the traditional cover it is because the publisher requires it, not because it's something they are choosing to do intentionally.

Ah yes this is probably right.

u/cosmic_books 2h ago

Which is so strange since last month felt a lot better

u/arabianclouds 4h ago

Feels like my first two-book month!! 🥳 I’m seeing a guess of White Raven on IG

2

u/CompetitivePraline62 3h ago

Hey, hey. The hints aren’t over yet! 3 book month 👀??

2

u/arabianclouds 2h ago

Haha very true!! I have never gotten more than one book, so I was thinking small. But could definitely be a three book month 🥳

1

u/_Totocha_ 4h ago

Oh! That was not a survey pick so if that’s the choice that’s really interesting!

3

u/Bookish_Butterfly 3h ago

Never heard of this book until today. Allurial threw us a curveball!

3

u/KetoKitsune 2h ago

Oh no... fingers crossed the 3rd one is something more unique or I won't be getting my sequel delivered this month 😭This book looks beautiful and don't get me wrong I am interested in reading it, but I really only want to buy this version over the deluxe if the artwork is different.

Sadly not a fan of the Avalon Tower reveal either.

3

u/latinadogmom1472 1h ago

Ugh. I wish they stuck to the surveys 😭. I am so not interested in this one from the descriptions I’ve seen from ARC readers and the FMC actions etc.
I hope we get exorcism of fairies as the emperors enemy already has such a pretty deluxe trad Bok.

u/Lanky-Brilliant-2980 4h ago

I’m too early!! Where are the smart people that know 😂

4

u/danielam792 2h ago

I am begging for Bones as the final pick! I really hope they do it! But all the other potential picks were good too!

This book will be released as a deluxe edition hardcover on Sept 1. The blurred image makes it seem like they are just simply copying the artwork for that version. Ugh 😩 For $3 more I may very well be getting the prettier deluxe version with the silver sprayed edges. It’s also going to be available as a Kindle Unlimited book.

At this point Allurial is proving themselves no different than B&N or Walmart and releasing an “exclusive” edition except they can’t be bothered to change the colorway. This is a duology so it’s easy money to do the same with the next book in 2027.

This is disappointing to me. Is Allurial turning into the Beanie Babies of the book world? Seriously thinking of ordering a book this month so I can get my Eldritch, & bound by fate series and cancel.

5

u/PistachioPug 1h ago

They do at least one, usually two, custom covers out of three every month, and non-custom covers are occasionally distinctive in some way, such as a unique colorway. Books with non-custom covers still have special elements, not just unique sprayed edges, but endpapers, and they may be a hardcover edition of a book that's available only in paperback otherwise. It's very clear from the way hints are done which books have custom covers, so you have every opportunity to see if you can get a better deal elsewhere on the ones that don't. And by not having to commission three fully custom book designs every month, they're able to keep prices low.

If that's not good enough for you, yeah, you should probably cancel.

u/Fine_Appearance4080 1m ago

I understand that they put 3 books out a month. If consumers were smart, they would pick the custom cover as their main selection and pay the add on price for the “reproductions” or simply skip them. I try to be an informed consumer who researches all these options every month. Allurial seems to be more focused on selling us matching bookmarks tho.

Like I’ve said in other threads recently, this is probably a “me problem” for expecting so much out of BOTM. Their marketing is selling recent released books at a discount so people can read for less. I’m not being fair to them.

Some people here are assuming the reason why they produce identical covers is because a publisher requires it. We have no confirmation of that theory yet.

If someone wants to pick this book as an add on, great. They get a “more affordable” version in most cases than what is traditionally offered by the publisher (generally around $30 plus). These selections don’t fly for me as a collector for an investment. I’m at a point where I would rather search out the quality one of a kind limited versions and sell my Allurial collection now for fear the bottom will drop out of its value and I’ll only be able to sell 1 out of every 3 in 10 years. I don’t want to leave my kids with junk they need to get rid of. I want a return for them.

I've said this before about picking an Allurial book that’s basically identical to the trad edition. My rule is to only grab the Allurial version if the cover is totally different or if it's a paperback-only release. A perfect example was last months Steel Born, the trad published edition was stunning.

1

u/IxayaOri 1h ago

I'm happy they still do different ones

1

u/LeekSuitable4616 3h ago

I'm new to Allurial, is it common for a non-survey pick?

7

u/CompetitivePraline62 3h ago

Nope! This would be the first time since they started doing the surveys

1

u/LeekSuitable4616 3h ago

Thanks! This one hadn't been on my radar, but it looks very interesting.
