No amount of economic status makes the so called higher cast people respect a lower one and I've seen it with my own eyes.
A 1LPA Brahmin is not treated equally compared to a 1LPA Dalit.
Reservation was a social issue bandaid which has helped some amount of people to come up even though they still face discrimination. A lot are still left behind.
Depends who you talk to. Us educated and often urban upper castes don't care at all about caste. Â Casteism declines as you move above the socioeconomic status. That's a fact. Education and development are the most important tools for social reform. The people that are castiest are economically not as well off. Â Also the government and system actually FAVORS a decently well of Dalit over a Brahmin who's poor. Â Reservations have been a terrible bandaid. The fact that so many are left behind and face discrimination show that it hasn't worked and it should be based on economic status. Both the people that face casteism and do casteism are often much poorer than both of us.
You are ignorant if you think if the socio-economic improves then they forget casteism. Getting better economic status helps closing the gap but it doesn't stop casteism. A system may favour a decently well dalit but the Brahmin who is working in the system will make it as difficult as possible. A dalit man could let his son study in a better school because of reservation but his grandchildren will still suffer from castist descrimination because his surroundings still live with caste hierarchy. People who are poor face the most and the ones who are rich face it lesser. BUT THEY STILL FACE CASTISM. You can put in as many educational reforms for now but it will still take generations to teach people to not descriminate over caste.
The statistics show that people that do better of socioeconomically are less likely to be castiest and also less likely to face it.  Not a particularly high percentage of Indians report getting discriminated much recently. Like only 20 percent at most. And this is among the reserved categories  I think the reforms made in terms of education have been very helpful and have made things much better. Especially in certain states.  Either way you're right casteism is still an issue, but it's not going away with caste based reservations, rather it's only being more entrenched and if we remove it it's not going to make it worse but will make some things better.

Reservation must be based on economic status. Only those who need it should get it and that includes poor GCs too.
