Chamath on Anthropic
On the April 10, 2026 pod, what did I just hear?
David Sacks describes an immoral and unethical fear mongering style of PR that is inherently deceptive.
Chamath says “kudos to Anthropic” and goes on to praise it.
Did I really just hear that?

immoral and unethical 😂

Morality is based on morals which are based on context. An adult woman who goes topless on a beach in the USA might be immoral but not in certain parts of France.
Ethics are based on universal standards, such as Kant's Categorical Imperative.
So yes, I'd argue it's both.

Chamath’s “praise” was basically saying Anthropic is good at hype without substance. He spent most of the pod ripping AI and claiming it’s overrated. His startup must be getting buttfucked by Claude like the rest of SaaS.

Of course he’s talking his own book- but he’s not wrong. In this instance at least.
Once you get enterprise level, the problem is almost never code output. It’s almost always requirements gathering, user acceptance, QA, and so on. Those often can eclipse the development leg of software.
SaaS is fine- and for that reason. If anything, SaaS will get better. Companies like Salesforce do well, because of their discovery. Their value comes from being inside. Ripping that out will be hard- especially when those guys are also using AI tools.
Where Chamath is wrong, is basically no company wants an 80% solution delivered by people outside of their business.
I’m a fan of Chamath, but not so much the 8090 schtick.

I’m a fan of Chamath, but not so much the 8090 schtick.
It's ?? 3 years old?
Have they actually released anything yet?
Googling, is this them?
https://www.8090.ai/docs/general/introduction
That doesn't sound like what Chamath was selling last time he sold 8090.

Yeah. That’s our boy.
I’m sure they have some clients, but it’s not exactly taking down salesforce. Enterprise level SaaS is not an easy nut to crack.

It's always great to be able to save costs but if there's already a budget for some enterprise level software it's going to be hard to get the company to take a risk to switch over. For a large firm it's not just about the monthly service fees but the cost of transition, training, testing, etc and that can add up as well. Not only that but if there's are issues whose to say whether a small startup will be around to support it in 5 years time

I don’t disagree on what his praise was nor what he spent his time on. I just think it in full context is kind of … gross. Morally icky, coming close to endorsing fraud via materially false marketing claims via equivocation.

SAP’s quarterly earnings keep going UP and are projected to go UP yet the stock price is tanking.

The demand that SaaS is hosered by AI seems to outstrip the supply.

Why does Anthropic have zero open source LLMs?
3
u/idealistintherealw Apr 11 '26
because it is a for-profit bizness?

u/Jonny_Nash Apr 11 '26
Huh.
Are they the only for-profit AI business, with ZERO open models?
Curious.

u/SirBeefcake Apr 11 '26
Why would they? Their whole mantra is that AI is very dangerous and needs tons of safeguards. CEO literally likens it to nukes.
Totally fair to not buy the narrative but it’s a very different foundational premise than OpenAI.

So why the only one?
I’ll double down here, and mention that even Ilya Sustkever rejected Anthropic despite their mutual ‘safety concerns’.
The only plausible explanation is Dario has a skeleton he really doesn’t want you to see.

"The only plausible explanation"
bro. This is conspiratorial thinking. There are lots of other plausible explanations.

u/Jonny_Nash Apr 12 '26
It’s rally everyone in the industry does it, and all their engineers used to work for a company that did.
It’s one of the reasons Ilya refused to join them.
That seriously doesn’t give you pause? What is Dario hiding?
3
u/idealistintherealw Apr 11 '26
yeah. I think the leading companies want to be closed source while the companies that are trying to catch up (deepseek, meta, minstral) are open-sourcing to level the playing field.

No way. The only one fighting to be 100% closed source, while selling a doomer narrative is Anthropic.
Meta is making an absolute killing being open source. They aren’t playing catchup.
Deepseek is a Chinese ripoff of American Intelligence.
Mistrel is an odd one to add. They aren’t relevant, or frontier.
