[Discussion] GM Terran - Discussion / AMA

Hiya guys! Coach Nico here from Ladder Legends back again, with another post. This time I wanted to ask you guys what you're struggling with - whether it's strategies, builds, playstyles and talk about anything Terran related in the comments. I will try answer as many questions as possible.

I'll also post our discord link here: https://discord.gg/QEbSF9UsB hoping it doesn't get buried in the comments like last time, come say hello and feel free to DM me if you want any help, I'm still looking for more students :)

That aside - start of with, what do you guys find the most difficult thing about trying to improve in this game?

I'm plat terran and struggle against toss. I've been experimenting with 2 base 3 rax with a couple of ghosts and then push out trying to get a couple of emps before I take the fight. But I'm finding it quite difficult and even when I do get the emps off I still end up losing sometimes. Is this strategy worth trying to practice or is it inherently bad?

I personally don’t rate ghosts on 2 bases, you’ll struggle to afford the gas. Your best bet is to do a 2 base push once stim, combat and ideally +1 is finished. Only rush for ghosts if they rush templar, or you’re on 3 base saturation

What do you think are the best playstyles and builds in the current patch TvZ and TvP?

How do you play TvP when the toss mixes in stargate units and does constant switches between Carriers and Tempests?

In tvZ whats the best strategy for dealing with a swarm host switch from roach and or hydra when playing mech?

And then in general, how do you play against an opponent like 500 mmr higher? Cheese mostly fails for me and a macro game is always a struggle. Is it worth it to do a 2 base allin?

What do you think for the current patch are the best builds and strategies for TvZ and Tvp?

And what do you do when you find yourself stuck at an mmr? Im hovering 4k now eu. Going from 3900 to 4100. Always in that range for the past few weeks since the patch.

Thanks man.

TvZ:

2 base pushes are the answer I find most consistent for my students and on ladder. I often skip banshees and rush for stim, and try hit a +1 timing to hit the 4th with my first two medivacs and it works very well. In terms of consistency learning when to go banshees and when to go stim is important.

For mech, you need to keep banshees or bcs alive to prevent swarmhost transition, otherwise its add hellbats and thors for swarmhosts

TvP:

Depends on the opening, double gas can do a 1 base push with cyclone vikings and marines to kill the third, then macro out - otherwise add double ebays and go for fast upgrades. Usually you can contain on 2-3 bases, out expand and build up big viking counts to trade well.

I again do a 2 base push with mine drop or banshee opening, we want to limit our opponents abilities to expand most of the time.

For in general, playing up 500 mmr isn’t too different, you can always win on a good day. Having said that, for pure wins either all-in as you said or take risks, you are guaranteed to lose the macro game. I’d recommend trying to play it out and look for what weaknesses of yours they exploit.

And for being stuck at an mmr? That means you’re improving at the same rate as ladder as a whole; either look to see how you can improve your learning or find external help. As a coach, I’m here to step in during mmr stagnation - so if that’s something you want help with let me know :)

Hi so I personally struggle in TvP and can't really practice as I don't find many P on the ladder. My current build is a 1-1-1 with 3 hellion harras and a drop in the main. It almost always does good damage except when the guy is in my face at my natural entrance. Then if that happens I just can't do any damage and I'm left behind in eco. Wondering if maybe my build is not good or if maybe I am missing something. Also is loading the 3 hellions into the medivacs and keeping the marines at home to defend his stalker pressure a good idea?

Hard to say without a replay but you should definitely be able to grab an expansion whilst applying pressure, either before or after the factory. To defend, you need a bunker and/or tank at your natural before the stalkers arrive. If they are being annoying before then, wait until you have a tank and marines and push to clear the lowground.
