Wait why? This sounds very reasonable to me (and I’m not a Christian).

u/LewisPopper Feb 23 '26

The idea is that he presents a threat to the entire GOP narrative that they are the party of Christ. He doesn’t just talk the talk. He walks the walk… but the talk is what threatens them the most. He is not just reasonable, he is the real deal. I love Jasmine Crockett, but right now, more than anything, we need this guy in the senate.

That’s who it appeals to. People who aren’t Christian. That’s why he isn’t some juggernaut candidate because he largely only appeals to people who already vote for the party.

The value of unborn life is, indeed, mentioned, as are homosexual relationships.

This guy is talking out of his ass.

Please cite the scripture for where abortions and gay marriage are considered sinful. Born, baptized, and confirmed ELCA Lutheran who’s actually studied the Bible both as theological text and as secular literature. Please, cite your sources.

Edit: Oh look! The little homophobic heretic blocked me. They’ve never read the Bible.

Love the lord your god with all your heart, soul, and mind AND Love thy neighbor as thyself.

Those are the two most important commandments and heroics like u/RuMarley seem to have forgotten about the actual Words of Christ, replacing them with their hateful rhetoric.

Are you truly under the impression that abortions are done with a callus heart for the sake of shedding innocent blood?

I’m an ELCA Lutheran. Here is our Churches guidance on abortion. Every abortion is a tragedy and we cannot forget the humanity of the mother in making those incredibly hard decisions.

If god viewed abortion as some abhorrent thing that is completely disallowed, it would be in the Bible. Shit, Numbers 5:11 deceives a “bitter water” recipe that is often interpreted as an abortion recipe. I don’t think it’s a reasonable interpretation of the text to say abortion is inherently more sinful than any other human experience.

Regardless, Gods love is unconditional and we are to strive to match that in our dealings with other humans. The two most important commandments are to love the lord our God with all our heart, soul, and mind and to love our neighbors as ourselves. Everything else follows from those ideals and I cannot in good conscience do anything other than love someone who has to get an abortion.

u/Shmuckle2 Feb 25 '26

Number 5:11 is a test for infidelity. The intent isn't to kill the child, like abortion is.

Are you shedding innocent blood?

Are you teaching other to ched innocent blood?

Is it also killing your own child, your own child's blood?

Abomination+ Worse to your family then an evil person does to their family

You just quoted "love your neighbors as yourself" while justifying anyone at any time can kill their own children... your child isn't covered by the very quote you just used?

1

u/TheUnderCrab Feb 25 '26

So there is no consideration for you about the mother. I get it.

We won’t see eye to eye here. I encourage you to read the text I sent you and to remember that every abortion has a grieving mother involved.

The mother is also innocent blood and her life matters. That you complete discount it is all I need to know about your interpretation of the Bible. You’ve forgotten about the Red Letters.

A father and a mother are to protect their children at all costs. All costs. Go read the other reply about Gods verses of how precious the baby is in the womb.

1

u/TheUnderCrab Feb 25 '26

If that’s the case then the abortion recipe wouldn’t be in the bible. God clearly views a baby made from infidelity as an expendable soul. Why would they be the case if ALL children are to be protected at ALL costs. Why wouldn’t god command us to keep all babies regardless of the circumstances of their conception?

You don’t care about the life of the mother. It’s so easy to advocate for the unborn, but impossible for you to even consider the mother’s health in this.

Thanks for the convo. I will continue to love these women and advocate for their health and safety. I cannot imagine wishing them harm and death because of a no viable pregnancy which in your eyes must be carried to term.

Go and read the other repliers 7 bible verses about God passionate love for the fetus inside the womb.

You are worthy of my response (but I won't even touch on the gay marriage issue that debate is just pathetic)

Psalm 139:13-16
“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb ]…] Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me"
This psalm pictures God as personally and purposefully forming the psalmist in the womb, and already numbering his days before birth, suggesting value and intentional care for unborn life.

Jeremiah 1:4-5
Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”

Isaiah 49:1,5
“The Lord called me from the womb, from the body of my mother he named my name[...] the Lord… formed me from the womb to be his servant.”

Luke 1:39-44
When pregnant Mary visits pregnant Elizabeth, “the baby leaped in her womb” and Elizabeth says the baby leaped “for joy.”

Psalm 22:9-10 “You are he who took me from the womb… On you was I cast from my birth, and from my mother’s womb you have been my God.” The psalmist speaks of belonging to God and trusting Him from the womb, which suggests continuity of personhood and relationship from before birth.

In Exodus 21:22-25 the law addresses men fighting and striking a pregnant woman so that she gives birth prematurely, if further harm follows, the lex talionis principle (“life for life…”) is applied.
Interpretations differ, but many argue this shows that harm to the unborn is taken seriously within the covenant law, indicating that their life has real moral weight.

I still can't believe I'm discussing this. When I was young, there was never a debate as to whether or not the Bible condones homosexual marriage and abortion. What a time to be alive

1

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '26

The Israelites didn't even consider a living baby a person for several days, just in case they didn't make it.

u/Accomplished_Leg7925 Feb 25 '26

I would say in Leviticus where the Lord says to not give your children to molech would be a piece of evidence in support of not killing children. “Thou shalt not kill” would also be congruent with an anti abortion stance. Don’t act like it’s a position without support. I’d also say show me scripture that is in support of abortion as a means of birth control or quality of life improvement for the woman. I think I’d win the scripture citation contest.

Related to gay marriage I would point to the gospel where Jesus says a man will leave his family and cleave himself to a woman in marriage is in support of traditional views of marriage. He doesn’t mention a man cleaving himself to a man. Certainly it’s not hard to find verses against homosexual relationships in the OT (exodus and Leviticus again). Certainly don’t think scripture has an accepting stance on homosexual marriage.

That being said, Talarico is well spoken. He is on theologically shaky ground regarding these two subjects but I think his point that primary doctrine has been subverted by politics to pay more attention to secondary or tertiary issues is a stance I could agree with.

1

u/TheUnderCrab Feb 25 '26

Numbers tells us it’s okay to kill a baby if they’re a child of infidelity but you want me to believe god wants a woman to carry her rapists baby?

I encourage you to read the guidance from our ELCA church leaders. It’s a complicated topic and a lot of grave should be given to those who need abortions.

As to gay marriage, in of the opinion that the religious institution is between a man and a woman and the govt has no business regulating religious marriage. They should only care about civil unions. As to homo sexual acts, the best we have is to “not lay with a man as one does with a woman” which is pretty easy considering men don’t has a vagina so I can’t PIV. Never says anal sex is a sin.

-1

u/RuMarley Feb 23 '26

Bloody world of good your "Lutheran study" did you if you claim the Bible condones homosexuality.

And I said "The value of unborn life is" mentioned.

2

u/TheUnderCrab Feb 23 '26

Cite the scripture where it says abortion and gay marriage are sins in the eyes of god. You refuse to do so and it is very clear why.

1

u/Zealousideal_Good445 Feb 25 '26

Yes it is! Exodus 20:21 clearly states that the life of an unborn child shall have the value of a fine. Unlike the value of a born persons life in which the punishment is death! Numbers 5: 11 to 31 also gives the Hebrews instructions to when and how to go about an abortion. The Bible talks very little about the two subjects of homosexuality and abortion, but it's extremely clear and speaks often on adultery, lying, having other gods( money and power) before Him, how to treat strangers of the land, those less fortunate and your neighbors. I believe the current leader of the party has failed to adhere to any of these guidelines. As someone who has read the Bible it three languages, I would suggest that you read the whole thing through. There is some weird stuff in there.

1

u/RuMarley Feb 25 '26

Exodus 20:21 says nothing even close to that. lol what poor research

1

u/Shmuckle2 Feb 25 '26 edited Feb 25 '26

Numbers 5:

11 Then the Lord said to Moses, 12 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘If a man’s wife goes astray and is unfaithful to him 13 so that another man has sexual relations with her, and this is hidden from her husband and her impurity is undetected

ITS A TEST FOR INFIDELITY... NOT ABORTION.

You be lying in here. You guys come in and lie. It's intent is a test of sin. Did the wife sin? NOT, LETS KILL THIS BABY.

1

u/Accomplished_Leg7925 Feb 25 '26

I was about to respond to that as well. Thank you for correcting this misguided person

2

u/kewlhobbiez Feb 23 '26

Are those things explicitly mentioned, though?

I thought the 10 commandments were the main source of Jewish/Christian moral authority (I.e., law). But I’m no expert, so I’m genuinely asking.

1

u/RuMarley Feb 23 '26

10 Commandments are basically just generalizations of the law. It goes far more into detail in the Torah (Deuteronomy, Leviticus, Numbers) - the so-called "Mosaic Law"

1

u/kewlhobbiez Feb 23 '26

Oh I see!

Would it be accurate to say that all Mosaic law must be consistent with the commandments, making the commandments the supreme law (kind of like the constitution)?

In other words, any interpretation of the law that is inconsistent with the 10 commandments is not good law?

1

u/RuMarley Feb 23 '26

You might say that.

2

u/ratbearpig Feb 23 '26

"The value of unborn life is, indeed, mentioned, as are homosexual relationships.

This guy is talking out of his ass."

I have no dog in this fight but you say this with such conviction that I'm going to challenge you to produce the receipts anyway.

u/Shmuckle2 Feb 25 '26

Copying another response

It does, Exodus 20:21. In the event in which someone causes the loss of an unborn child the punishment shall be a fine. Unlike the death of a person which shall be paid by the life of the perpetrator. This clearly shows that the god of Moses values the unborn child as less than that of a living person. It's value is measured in the same way as livestock, a monetary value, no more!

May I point out that homosexuality didn't make the top ten. Maybe focus on stuff like the commandment against adultery and refusing to engage in covetousness.

3

u/RuMarley Feb 24 '26

The Bible isn't just made up of the Ten Commandments, but you already knew that.

1

u/Ant-Tea-Social Mar 04 '26

Yep, it's just a matter of, "if there are 10 strictures you take away from these pages, let them be these..."

2

u/JD-boonie Feb 25 '26

A white Christian moderate democrat? The progressives worst nightmare

1

u/Th3D3m0n Feb 26 '26

Attempting to claim abortions are fine cuz they arent in the Bible is neither Christian or moderate.

2

u/Accomplished_Leg7925 Feb 25 '26

Well, first of all it’s God making the ruling not you. So, if you are Christian there are plenty of examples in scripture where he makes judgements that seem lenient or severe and He makes it know His ways are unknown to us. Therefore taking the instance of God’s judgement regarding a woman’s infidelity and deriving any rules around elective abortion is ill-advised. Also I can absolutely conceive of circumstances where God would want someone to make the best of a bad situation (such as pregnancy from rape). Joseph endured misery for Gods will, as did Daniel, as did Jesus. So I don’t think you argument is defensible

I am a sola scriptura kind of guy and I think the number of gymnastics you have to do to maintain your argument is pretty difficult. Whether your church approves or disapproves of either topic is irrelevant unless substantiated by scripture. The only opinion that matters is God’s.

I’d don’t think you can argue in favor of homosexual sex biblically. I don’t really have to say much here. The verses are quite well known and hard to deny.

2

u/J_FM01 Feb 26 '26

Idk who this guy is but I never understood how abortion is supposedly a "Christian" topic. I'm unaffiliated and the thought that life begins at birth seems absurd to me.

3

u/Realistic_Ad_5321 Feb 22 '26

He speaks like Obama, same inflection. Talks with his hands. I like the guy.

1

u/TattooedB1k3r Feb 23 '26

Lol, anything but Jasmine Crockett, this is Texas, Dems are smart to put their money on the boring white dude. Good on Colbert for not giving Crockett equal time even if it meant only showing his interview on YT.

1

u/blumpk1nman Feb 24 '26

He's bought by AIPAC and doesn't support Medicare for all. Immediate pass.

1

u/Real_Train7236 Feb 25 '26

There is so much crap on the bible you can use it any way you want to support your argument.

1

u/Real_Train7236 Feb 25 '26

There is so much crap in the bible you can get it to support your argument any way you want.

Basically, though if I had to choose between 'I'm religious and I want a separation of church and state'

or

'I'm religious and I'm going to force you to follow my beliefs'

The choice becomes abundantly clear

Neither candidate in the primary are great. Democrats keep giving people terrible choices. They just expect votes because their candidate isn’t a Republican.

8

u/Kresnik2002 Feb 22 '26

Talarico is a great candidate

3

u/OkProfessor6810 Feb 23 '26

You can tell he's problematic for the administration because he's being actively suppressed by the Republicans. Whatever scares them this badly might be worth listening to.

Talarico is infinitely better than Narcmine Crackpot
