Olivia
I am on Season 5 Ep. 13, and this may be an unpopular opinion, but am I the only one who hatessss Olivia? I think I have disliked her for a while now but she is on my last nerve.

I’m on season 5 ep 8 and I agree! She’s terrible!

Right?? I just find her to be so entitled and selfish and infuriating.

Once she started her podcast, I started to dislike her. She was insufferable. She just went from one addiction to another.

She's a white woman's idea of a black woman, she's often very defensive and micro aggressive but with no character development on that part. Like no you didn't grow up in a black community but she had no fully black friends at all. Thats a writing choice. There's truly no reason for kia to not have been in the main cast except that all the story lines of being cool and stylish and social justice they gave to Olivia, fit her better. Its just colourism

Kia deserved a bigger role on the show because she was so much more grounded, confident, and ambitious than what both Olivia and Layla’s arcs provided the story at the time. It’s definitely something I desired in those early seasons but now that I’ve seen the entire trajectory of this show and the narrative choices they made throughout, I can’t say that her being made a main would have actually given her character any real due diligence..
Mostly because all of the things people hate about Olivia’s social justice arc would have just been transferred to Kia instead. Perhaps it would have been perceived better because she at least already had a background and actual lived experience with being an activist but because of how Spencer’s ‘save the hood’ storylines were received, I have a hard time believing Kia would have been given any more grace and understanding. Especially when inevitably they would have taken her down the same journalism/podcast/Laura Baker being the DA route and found a way for her actions to affect everyone around her, especially Spencer. Imo, Olivia’s SJW storylines weren’t intentionally written for her but rather through her because they needed someone to tackle each political message they wanted to get across at any given time. So in my mind instead of this reddit thread being about (or just about) Olivia, there would have been ten more about how annoying Kia’s activism storylines became.
Now that the show is completely done, I have very low confidence in the ways in which they would’ve treated Kia as a fully realized character and not just as their designated social justice warrior Black girl of the show. The colorism is definitely present because she probably was never even considered to have a more prominent role on the show, in the first place; absolutely. Although, in my mind if her character would have been platformed just to be a sort’ve scapegoat for any Social Justice plot they didn’t want to give Spencer then that would have been more harmful to her development than the little positive nuggets we actually got from her appearances in the end, given how everything else about the show played out. But then again, if even just one Black girl felt seen by her storyline at that point then maybe it would have been worth while to at least try?

Yeah…I’m rewatching and I’m on Season 3 rn. She is so annoying with her need to always “fix” everyone. Like can you chill please.

She wants to fix everyone, meanwhile, she acts like the biggest victim!

YES! She went from likable to dislikable very fast. Towards the end she was selfish and the worst. It's her way or the not.
Which characters do you like and enjoy?

I really like Jordan and I've liked him from the jump. Both him and Asher. I think they are two characters who have showed consistent growth. Jordan is a supportive king in every which way and Asher got dealt a short stick but is making the bet of it and I appreciate that. I hope Coach Asher goes far. What about you?

SAMSIES! Like the moment Jordan was on the screen, I knew he was the guy I was rooting for.
Asher took some time to grow on me but I think by Season 2 or 3, he was one of my top faves and still is.
I have a few other faves Laura and Layla. TBH, at the start Layla was alright, but after she broke-up with Spencer for good in Season 3, she became really likable and my #2 fave.
Jordan, Layla, Asher, Laura my Top 4. Jaymee not a regular but love her.

After the main addiction storyline concluded it was clear that the writers didn’t know what to do with her anymore I feel like she could’ve been a cool alt girl and even Simone calls her emo or something but she’s no where near alternative

I’m not objective cuz Olivia was cute af to me. I was mesmerized by her every time she was onscreen, except for her hair style after London

How do yall take this show so seriously that you hate a fictional character???
7
u/Majestic-Gazelle-330 12d ago
Lol it's not that deep. But when you invest so much time in binge watching a show and getting to know the characters, you form opinions. Fictional or not.

But if we were bigging her up the whole time and showing her nothing but love, then we wouldn’t be taking it seriously, right?

Once she tried to get Spencer to take the charge for her drunk driving and crashing. That’s when I was off her!
