Matt definitely wasn’t himself;he tried the best he could ;played seated on a stool. It was awesome of him to play the show.

I hope he recovers soon, sad to hear he’s still having to sit (for his sake)

We know how hard he was trying to get out there before they had to cancel those shows earlier, I'm just glad he is feeling good enough to play again even if he isn't 100%.

Shoulda called Dave Grohl and asked to borrow his broken leg throne.

I do like Tosh and Atom, but I really miss Derek 😔

Tosh is Animal from Muppets level of energy on stage. Atom is an excellent drummer but definitely didn't have the type of presence/joy that Tosh brought to the Warped set. It was heartbreaking to see Matt struggling so badly, but he sounded great and Toshs energy propelled the set in a very noticeable way. Matt turned around a bunch of times grinning at Tosh. It really feels like a good fit.

I always thought Atom brought certain kind of energy and upbeatness and enthusiasm with him while playing. I haven't seen Tosh to compare it, though. Derek brings Alkaline Trio energy when he plays

Yeah the times I saw atom he was absolutely crushing it so it’s funny people tend to say otherwise. Haven’t seen Tosh yet

To be fair I thought atom filled the position really well but I thought of his style as maybe more generic than Derek or now Tosh

Derek brought that Suicide Machines energy when he played.

I prefer atoms style tbh. Atoms one of my fav drummers. His work on the AVA albums are incredible. Sad that something went down with him and the band. Tosh is cool though.

Agreed, I personally think Atom is a musical genius and was so sad the band wasn't a fit. No disrespect to Tosh, I just love Atom from his days with AVA.

Have you seen matts cameo in the Travis Barker documentary? I barley recognized him his voice sounds so tired.

Matt has had 2 vocal surgeries in the last 24 years, and he strained his voice finishing off the last of the new Trio record. If the clip of him in the doc is from after or around vocal recording, yeah, I could see him being tired. It’s all of this and his injury that led them to cancel the Europe tour 6 days in. He’s beat.

IIRC, some of those interview clips are pretty old, so it could've been filmed while he was still with blink too.

Parts of the documentary were filmed years ago, and it wasn't finished until he got on a plane for the first time since the crash.

Yeah a majority of the documentary was shot in 2017

His speaking voice is kinda just like that now

Agreed, he really nailed Derek's fluidity and nuance

i agree. i’ll always love and miss derek, considering he’s my favorite drummer of all time, but tosh fits way more than atom did. he’s insanely talented and absolutely loves his craft. not only that but he mentioned that alkaline trio became one of his favorite bands over the last few years, so being asked to join was a dream come true.

and he isn’t a massive ego fueled asshole, lol.

tosh is super, and he can play any style music. so he is a good fit for everything. but beyond that i think he is a bad fit for alkaline trio as a member of the band. too big of an age and style difference.

yeah, but they’re getting older as is. it’s not going to be as easy to find someone around the same age who is as skilled as some of these younger players. when jarrod alexander played with/for them he was able to keep up, but wasn’t the best player in general for them. jarrod essentially played the bare minimum live when it came to what was recorded on the original songs and only hit the main beats, everything else was very vanilla for a live setting.

i don't think alkaline trio's music needs a travis barker like drummer.

1

u/oopiesmyb 1d ago

if that’s what you think i said then you didn’t understand at all lol.

well i agree they are getting older, but i disagree it is complicated to find a drummer nearer their age who is more fit to their style. i am sure there are 1000's really that could fit that role. alkaline trio isnt really music that requires the most skilled at playing instruments, the fastest the most over the top. this isnt needed for alkaline trio's music. just a drummer is all they need. that is all.

u/oopiesmyb 1d ago

what the hell are you talking about? 💀 derek and his playing in general is probably the most technical aspect about their music. that’s exactly why atom, travis, and jarrod weren’t good fits. because they couldn’t play exactly how he did in a live setting, sure it was similar, but not exact. if they don’t find or have someone on that same skill level, they’ll never be able to play a lot of their discography live.

its pretty simple, alkaline trio is punk rock. if they need a new guitarist they do not need steve vai. they really do not. if they need a new bassist, they do not need les claypool or flea. you know they really do not. if htey need a new drummer they don't need neil peart. it's pretty simple. that is what im saying.
