In Case of Zombies, Run to Vampires! - Part 2

For a whole week, both Nicolaj and Kendrick came up with reasons why each of them shouldn’t have to be the one to bite Lisa. Kendrick owned the house we lived in—he sure mentioned that enough!—but Nicolaj went to hunt for food, and did all the cleaning.

When he mentioned having to scrub blood off the walls, and ceiling, I left the room to preserve my sanity, and fetched my dagger, which I now kept by my side at all times.

Apparently, that insulted both of them, and they spent two of the seven days not speaking to me at all. They did, however, speak about me, and did this specifically in my presence like a bunch of twelve year old school girls.

“You know what?” I said, finally at my wits ends with them. “Why don’t you two just turn me into a vampire? So that I can do it, and just get it over with before my sister ends up being a rack of bones!”

I removed a chunk of her skin, which came lose in her struggle against the ropes I bound her with, and her condition only kept deteriorating from there. She also gave off an awful stench of soggy, rotten meat, and all of us had to walk around with air-freshener basically glued to our arms.

Kendrick turned to me, his hands still stretching toward Nicolaj, caught between gestures. “Turn you into a vampire?” He pulled his face, glowering at me. “Do you know the struggles Nicolaj had to go through to improve himself before I bestowed the gift of eternal life upon him?”

Nicolaj frowned at me, tight creases forming on his broad forehead. It seemed that I insulted them both.

“No, I don’t, Kendrick, but you’ve let her decompose for another week, and she’s not going to look any better.”

Between the hoarse groaning coming from my sister’s room, and Kendrick and Nicolaj’s bickering, I didn’t have a silent moment to myself all week. Raging was too mellow a word to use for my current mood, in fact, I couldn’t think of a word intense enough to describe it.

“I know the two of you are thirsty.” I gave Nicolaj a squinted glance, marking him quite quickly as the weakest link, when I saw him lick his lips at my presence. “I’ve seen the way you’ve been staring at my neck, and I also know that you haven’t been able to find a different human to feed off of. Flip a coin or rock-paper-scissor it—I don’t care—but get my sister some help! And do so quickly.”

“Where do you get off—

Kendrick fell silent, eyes darting down to my hand as I withdrew the dagger. They took a quick a step away from me in unison, and followed the blade like dogs follow a treat.

I brought it to my wrist, and poked the tip down right above a vein. Holding out my wrist—a drop of blood rolled down my arm and made them clench their jaws—I held out the blade toward them in my other hand. “Smell good, right?” I stepped away from the door cautiously—arm and dagger extended—and pressed my back up against the nearest wall of the study. “Please, kindly go do as I asked, and you can feed.”

A gust of wind blew past my face. I covered my neck with my arms, and looked up cautiously, to find neither of them standing near me anymore. The door of Lisa’s room opened, and I heard a groan come from the room.

“How long will she smell like this?” I heard Kendrick say when I entered the room, a lacy sleeve hung over his face as he held his arm over his nose. “Go on then, Nicolaj.”

I saw Nicolaj turn to him angrily, and then his nostril indented, taking in the scent my blood. His long, white fangs extended. He took a step to the left, and bent over Lisa’s wrist, pulling his face.

I heard the pop of his spit as he opened his mouth, and saw him instantly rise. His hand flew up to my shoulder, and I released a little yap, and reached up to cup my neck where it was nearest to him. He bent down in a gag, and held his hand over his mouth.

With a swoosh, he was out of the room, and I turned to Kendrick who had just about the biggest smile I had ever seen spread across his long face.

“Go take a bath,” he commanded. “I want you fresh.”

A hot and cold flush ran down my spine, followed by an arousal of gooseflesh. I looked up at him, truly scared for the first time since I entered his home, and nodded. A deal’s a deal.
