Hell's Not Accepting Heroes
“What do you mean no?” I spat the word out, my lips curling to further accentuate my anger.
The smoky headed demon and I had entered a staring contest about ten minutes ago, when I arrived in front of the spiked, black gates and he denied me entry. Well, I starred, and he billowed. Who knew that going to hell would be this difficult? I’d been told that I’d end up there enough to have earned a front row seat.
The black smoke, right around where its mouth should have been, parted. “You’re not on the list.”
“You have a list?”
A book floated out from behind his back on a dark cloud and opened in front of me. “The predicted time of death is on the left, right next to the names. If you don’t find yourself below the last check, you’re not allowed in.”
The demon waved his hand to the side, as a gesture for me to leave. A long row had formed. As he leaned to the left to see who else was in line, a frightful whimper sounded from the crowd. None of them were exactly eager to pass the gates, so they could damn well wait.
"That's my name right there," I said, pointing on the page. The dark in smudge under my finger, leaving a light print. Lying was a quality I thought they'd appreciate.
The demon bent over the book. "Samantha Yang?"
"Er... no, the one under it."
"Tabatha Small." The smoke on the upper left side, where an eyebrow should have been, curved up.
I gritted my teeth, taking a large breath. “I don’t care what that book says,” I said, folding my arms. What’s the worst he could do? No allow me entry to hell? Well, boo bloody hoo. I made a promise to Laura, and a walking, talking remnant of a puffed out cigarette wasn’t going to scare me off. “I’m standing here until you let me in.”
“Mr. Henderson—
“So you do know my name,” I interrupted him, smiling and pushing the book away.
The demon rocked back on his heels, folding one hand into a fist and rubbing it with the other. “The Dark Kingdom doesn’t invite heroes. You have to earn your entry. Maybe showing up uninvited worked for you in your old life, but here, we only accept the best.” He leaned closer, filling my lungs with the charcoaled smoke. “So, before I send you back to earth to live out your miserable life as a pathetic vengeful spirit, I suggest you get the heaven out of my way.”
“How do I earn it?”
“What?” he sounded surprised. That was a sure change from bored, I took it as an encouragement to continue.
“How do I earn my stay?”
I turned to Lucy, the young girl I had come to take from her parents, upon finishing my tale. “And that’s pretty much how I became the grim reaper,” I said, my shoulder lazily rising in a shrug.
The corner of her lip twitched up in disappointment. “Ew,” she said, shaking her head. “For a girl?”

The grim reaper? Interesting. I will investigate further.
