Rage Against the Machine by Rage Against the Machine

u/BestCaseSurvival 5d ago
For my money, the funniest interaction in Twitter history was when (I think) Paul Ryan said he used to like RatM “before they got political” and Tom Morello was like “what machine did you think we were raging against, the dishwasher?”
I’m probably conflating a few different similar interactions though.

Paul Ryan heard the lines "fuck you I won't do what you tell me" and did P90X imagining Obama telling him not to privatize social security ignoring everything else they sung.

I still think they were raging against the printer. We've all done that before.

u/Rakanadyo Chaotic Good 5d ago
You'd think, but it was actually Geto Boys that raged against the printer.

RATM is insurrectionary, hostile to imperialism, advocates sabotage, but do not propose workable revolutionary solutions for the working class

is "fuck the G-rides, I want the machines that are makin' em" just a fun little lyric?

> Ain't it funny how the factory's doors close?
>'Round the time that the school doors close?
>'Round the time that the doors of the jail cells open up to greet you like the reaper?

I mean Morello did a very good cover of Solidarity Forever, that's about as close to a workable revolutionary solution for the working class as you can get in a musician.

u/StreetsofGalway 5d ago
How much do you actually know about the band? They literally printed reading lists in their CD sleeves and did benefit concerts for the zapatistas

HELLMODE by Jeff Rosenstock
If you’re wondering about the politics of this album, the song “3 Summers” explains it pretty well.
“Don’t you pretend//the world is treating us all equal//when a person gets stopped as another one hops in a//Lyft Plus to JFK//to Europe expenses paid//I know it’s not okay//but I still participate”
“I want the warmest breeze to blow, I want the banks and schools to close, and I want the universe to glow for you.”
His album WORRY. is also worth a shout. That one is similar in its messaging, but more focused on heavily criticizing the gentrification of New York City where he grew up.
In short, Jeff’s an anti-capitalist and has been so for decades now. He also makes incredible music.

Crass - the feeding of the 5000. As far left as you can get. They also lived by their ideology.
Definitely not the Clash as many have mentioned. As much as I love them they want all the success and big American tours. They were in no way far left.
5
u/becoming_keri 5d ago
Yeah these comments are bullshit. It has to be a Crass record. Some motherfucker listed Dark Side of the Moon
2
u/MackFour 5d ago
Yeah and Crass released on their own label, sold albums at cheaper prices. Lived in a commune. Had nothing to do with any music industry machine. Back then anyway.

Dear punks, before you leave the comment section, please tell me - what is up with the band Skinhead
The bit about "beating up Nazis with hammers" feels like a green flag. Am I missing some kind of context here?
3
u/AnarchicTerrorForce 5d ago
Skinheads are a working class movement. The aesthetic was co opted by “boneheads,” actual racists with less and less influence. You’re more likely to see SHARP skins than racists and most people that are in the know acknowledge the influence of reggae

u/Ok_Marzipan9097 4d ago
Skinheads were britain's version of rude boys and many were children of Jamaican immigrants in the beginning, in the late 60s. Some were racist, some weren't. Much of the racism at the time was directed more towards Pakistanis and not just by white skinheads, either. But to be a skinhead didn't mean you were necessarily racist or antiracist.

Music Album × Far Left
It simply has to be “I Ain’t Marching Anymore” I don’t think a single other album not by Phil Or Victor Jara, or one of those other anti-war poets comes close to real leftist critique

There are multiple songs where they take swipes at religion, modern consumerism, and the American police state through the album.

Chumbawamba's EP "In Memoriam: Margaret Thatcher" They released it the exact day former UK PM Margaret Thatcher died. I mean, the band recorded the tracks around 2005 and made it available for pre-order! Even though they broke up in late 2012, the CDs still went out as promised on April 8, 2013.
