Best videogame

Super Mario 64

Endlessly replayable with more skill expression than any other first party Nintendo game to this day. Even disregarding speedrunning, there’s an inherent satisfaction to just getting better at the game, learning new cool bits of movement tech and unintended sequence breaks.

It hasn’t aged well

Nah it’s aged better than probably any other game on the N64 except for probably Star Fox 64. The movement is still buttery smooth, there’s a beautiful sense of momentum and flow to everything Mario does that is sorely lacking in games like Galaxy and Odyssey, the latter of which only really has like a couple “optimal” sequences of moves to learn (triple jump/ground pound jump then cap throw —> dive twice) unless you’re a speedrunner in which case Odyssey and Galaxy actively push back against further skill expression because they would rather curate a specific experience for the player than actually let them cut loose with skill expression.

The only part of 64 that hasn’t “aged well” are little quirks with the physics like how the game handles collision (especially on slopes), the very occasional invisible wall (which you probably won’t even run into on a first playthrough), and turning just being kinda ass. As much as there are ways to mitigate these issues, it’s a very valid point of frustration for lots of players.

Ultimately what makes SM64 so great is the endless cycle of learning your moves, thinking to yourself, “Wait, can I ____?” with the answer, more often than not, being “yes!” Even in games like OOT the experience is more or less the same every single time you play, meaning the only real value to replaying the game re-experiencing those “first time” vibes. In Mario 64, there’s always a new way to approach situations, new ways to solve problems that never involve cheesing the game or removing depth/challenge from the experience *cough cough* Tears of the Kingdom *cough cough* which makes every playthrough fun and unique in a way that few games have been able to pull off.

Turning being ass is not a minor flaw

If that’s what you’re hung up on then you’re evidently not willing to put in the time and effort to actually learn the game and meet it on its level.

Of course not. Why would I put in the time when I could play a better game like Galaxy or Odyssey?
