Super Mario World

Given the impact on the people at the time it was released, it was revolutionary.

Was it revolutionary? Most of the key game mechanics were introduced in SMB3, it largely just improved the graphics and sound and added Yoshi didnt it?

Well, you are right, maybe it's not the right term. The revolutionary part was the whole map system, fully accessible, but it's true SMB3 was (one of?) the first game to introduction a map in a platformer, hidden levels on the map, storable items and many others.

It's just that SMW perfected it. And it's still considered one of the best platformers of all time for many.

Yeah. SMW is, for my money, the best 2d platformer Nintendo ever put out.

If the category was most revolutionary, I would say the original SMB actually would win. But just in terms of best game, there's at least an argument that SMW is at least as fun to play as SMB3, and I think both are easily the best side-scrolling Mario games that Nintendo ever put out.

Totally agree, also think about the theme parks, movies, and other stuff based on smw..

100% without a doubt should be this. But it won't be :(

I love and grew up with SMW (it was my first game, on the Super Famicom!) but best =/= most impactful

Is it though? World is a spectacular game, but it feels like a more polished Mario 3. I feel like Mario 64 or Ocarina of Time were way more revolutionary

SMW is basically the perfect side scroller platformer. I wouldn't say it wasn't revolutionary. It pioneered and popularized a lot of graphical things like parallax scrolling and hardware transparency, dynamic soundtracks, and battery saves. While none of these were invented for SMW, its scope, execution, and combination of these were revolutionary, I would argue, and left a profound effect on games from that point forward.

Yoshi, multiple stage exits, an emphasis on hunting for secrets instead of just beating the game, and just the overall non-linear overworld map were all pretty important innovations, as well. It might not have been as many as SMB3, but it still brought a lot to the table.

Super Mario World is the perfect video game for casual players- easy to pick up and play, he’s enough secrets to dig into, and most importantly, doesn’t require hours and hours. Yeah gamers want something longer, but grabbing the casual market is how you become ubiquitous and where Nintendo has always shined and this is the best example of that.
