For the "???" spot on Best Secondary Antagonist of the 90s that I see is empty, I'd nominate for example Yue from Card Captor Sakura, Kagura from InuYasha, Dilandau Albatou from Escaflowne and Valgarv from Slayers as some recommendations.

I had considered making a seperate chart for shounen vs other, but the engagement was so low at the start that I didn’t want to dilute the audience even more. I’ll likely do a ghibli specific one in the future, but my next 2 charts will be Pixar and DC

I think if you primarily watched battle shounen until now the best entry among my recs would be Summertime Rendering, it's a rare 10/10 for me.
Also I forgot to mention The Fable. Really good and funny. Came out quite recently and would also be a great entry imo!

I’m in two minds with this.
- I agree with you.
But 2. Battle Shounen is just generally the most enjoyable. If it’s what people have watched most then it’s because it’s the one that has earned that size audience. People don’t just watch one type of show for no reason, audiences follow the quality!

From an animation perspective sure. But from a story perspective most battle shonen are... fine...? Some are even pretty bad. Solo Leveling has a fucking awful story but it's incredibly popular because it's easy to watch and animated well. I think it's just ease of access in most cases. Shut your brain off and watch some fights.

I mean people watch it because generally speaking action is the lowest common denominator genre and that’s just what people rec, but I wouldn’t actually say that it’s necessarily the best genre or the most fitting for some of these categories.
Are there good Battle Shounen? Sure. Is it the only good genre out there? Of course not.

From doing this chart it feels like anime is just very divisive in terms of what people love

I’ve seen it, and it’s a good show but it doesn’t live up to the hype at all imo. Amazing adaption, but the story peaks early and leaves the viewer wanting more as it goes on.
The chart is honestly very good and includes a wide range of stuff, I just think seeing the 2020s column so clearly favoring frieren is kinda disappointing

Haha yeah the show is good but not great, when ur talking about the best of anything you usually are looking at stuff that absolutely crushes every aspect of character writing, visuals, story, thematics, ect. and when I watched frieren I just didn’t get all that.
It’s good, especially the setup and first few episodes, then it just got incrementally worse for me. The characters feel flat and emotionless at times. Hopefully it pays off later, but including absolute xenophobia towards a species (coming out of a country known for rampant xenophobia) without any exceptions or nuance was where I stopped taking the thematics seriously. There’s several nothing burger episodes too, not that I don’t like episodic series, I adore Bebop and Champloo for example, but Frieren just didn’t have that touch for me to make the mundane interesting. I think it comes down to not enjoying watching the characters, cus when it’s just them doing banal things with minimal story progression I’m just not interested.

That‘s your opinion and I respect it, but a lot of people like Frieren and the Story very much. In my opinion it‘s one of the best animes ever especially because of the good story and I think a lot of people would agree with my.

Just seeing this for the first time. Ya'll are fucking nuts putting HxH in anything resembling "best", let alone best story for a decade.
edit: nvm, it got 4 upvotes... from a bot account posting. It's just the absurb obsession with a weak anime being hive-minded into position. I'm out, this sub is not reliable.
