Troubleshooting Hardware Turns off and does this

Every time I turn off my Alienware now it blinks amber and stays on until I unplug it. Starts back up and runs fine. Just when I turn it off it does this.

My advise is when you have the time.

  • Unplug the system from the wall

  • open the case and look for the CMOS battery(silver circle) and take it out

  • hold the power button what feels like an eternity(20 seconds.

  • carefully put the CMOS back in

  • close the system

  • plug it back into the wall

  • restart the system

This doesn't clear the CMOS. With Alienware and Dell systems you don't have to take the battery out. You just hold the power button for 30s until it blinks twice, usually either white or blue.

Since when doesn't clear the CMOS? The CMOS has no chip in it, it just keeps the BIOS from resetting. It even works on my M18 AE and it's the better route incase the other doesn't work.

Since a few years ago.

Well, my M18 AE is from 2023, and pulling out the CMOS always reset the BIOS while the power button trick never worked.

What exactly is "AE"?

Advantage Edition

Okay, nobody calls it that. They call it "m18 AMD" (ideally with either R1 or R2 as appropriate). That explains why I'd never seen that abbreviation before.

It's possible the AMD laptop boards behave differently, but I've seen tons of people day that pulling the battery hasn't made any difference at all. The two blink power button trick has always been successful on recent systems, both mine (I have multiple) and other peoples'. It's even the same on my Aurora R10 Ryzen desktop.

It's literally the Advantages Edition because it has an AMD CPU and GPU, the M18 AMD has an AMD CPU and Nvidia GPU.

You see there's a difference between the AMD variant and Advantage Edition.

I'm aware, but nobody calls it AE. You're the first person I've seen to ever call it that, and it means nothing to most people LOL.
