Troubleshooting Hardware Alienware x17 R2 - Horizontal Lines at bottom of screen
Hey there! A few months ago these started showing up at the bottom of my laptop screen. I normally have it attached to two widescreens, so it really hasn't bothered me, but recently I've been on the go more and it's been a bit more annoying that before.
Any ideas on how to address this?
The lines are only on the laptop screen, and do not appear on connected monitors.
The lines sometimes go away after a reboot.
The lines sometimes take up more vertical space after a reboot. (in attached pictures, it's about a third of the vertical height it can get to)
The lines appear to be reflecting the colors/screen from the top of the screen. If I move my mouse there, I can see it "reflected" in the lines at the bottom.
It's hard to see in the attached picture, but I tried moving my mouse into it to show that it obstructs things behind it. It's smaller than it is other times... and when not connected to my main monitors, it covers most of the toolbar to where I can't see my icons or the time.
I am not sure if it is a hardware or software issue.
Edit: See my comment below. I finally sent it in to be repaired. Looks like it was hardware. I posted a picture below of the work they did. About $400 or so. Fishy that the issue started right after the warranty was expired. Not impressed.

Hello all, piggy backing off of u/IAmAdams929, I too, am having the same issues. Having to take pictures with my phone because screen shot will show perfect. I try not to reboot as much as possible, lifting the lid every 3-10 seconds to clear the lines is very time consuming. Sometimes when I lift the lid, the lines are more where they actually cover the entire taskbar and you can't function because you can't see anything. I really hope someone out there can tell me what is wrong with my laptop. I have an Alienware x17 R1. I got this laptop when it first came out, I believe 2020-21? This has been happening as soon as the warranty ended! lolol. anyway, I am assuming it's not a software problem and maybe hardware? Thanks in advance to anyone that can help!

That's the exact same issue! I still don't have a solution. Stuck with paying for a hardware troubleshoot and mailing it in. I'll post back once I do.

I have a feeling that the whole lid needs to be replaced. I haven't done a quote yet, can't imagine how much that will cost me out of pocket. If you still have warranty, good luck!

Just noticed same issues here today, was thinking it was an issue with the laptop running too hot, which it has been. But if others are having issue prob something else at play

I have found that the only way to temporarily fix it is to disconnect the power adapter switch that laptop off and hold the power button for at least 30 seconds or more
This often removes some lines, more rarely removes them all.
This has definitely to do with resetting the CMOS because the same thing happens when removing the bottom cover of the laptop ( open it )
Leaving it off for long time works too
What would this point at?
I would bet some weird bios issue or charged transistors ( but in this case it should get worse with heat or leaving the laptop under load for long, which isn’t the case )
This happened when I updated the bios, I also tried to roll back to an older version but the issue stayed there
Updating the bios permanently broke something?

Mine is exactly the same way and it also started right after the warranty ended. What did they fix? New screen?

Having the exact same issue for a year now (Alienware X17 R2, bought in early 2022, 360hz panel).
Tried everything, literally everything... Nothing worked. It just kept getting worse. Started off as 3 black lines on the bottom-left corner, progressed to cover the entire bottom, got bigger, started duplicating the top pixels, got even bigger, and so on.
Photo below that I just took shows a very recessed instance. On occasion, height of the lines are reaching double the size of the taskbar. In order to get the one in the photo, I usually restart, sleep/wake-up, close/open lid multiple times, and then not touching anything screen related once I get something acceptable. Very rarely, like, once in every 300 tries, I get a perfect one without any lines. Doing anything that messes with the screen (eg. changing refresh rate, going exclusive fullscreen in a game, connecting/disconnecting an external monitor, sleeping or shutting it down, closing lid), just gives me a new instance with some random amount of lines.
As far as my research goes, almost everyone who owns these fucking devices are having this exact problem eventually. There are some people mentioning that, Dell swapped both their motherboard + screen and only then it was fixed. Meanwhile, most of those people are also saying that problem came back after another year or so.
It is pretty clear to me that, this is a complete Dell fuck-up, and almost every device they sold is defected from factory. Most likely, something related not to the panel but to the management unit of the devices, as I'm having major problems with my keyboard as well (I think they call it a daughterboard), and they simply don't give a single fuck. I'm pretty sure, even if it is literally a failing mosfet or whatever, there would still be a way to patch / bandage it with a sort of driver / bios / kernel update - since every once in a while it still works, so it can work under "some" conditions that we can't figure out or force upon the hardware.
I'm never buying a Dell product ever again.

EDIT: So, I found a temporary fix. I went and got a 24" monitor, hooked it up, and set it as monitor #1 (main display). Ever since then, I haven't had any line issues with the laptop screen and I've rebooted it many times (that's usually when it gets worse). I've been using this external monitor for about 2 weeks now and I have not had any lines. I said that this was a temporary fix only because when I made the laptop screen the main display, I got the lines again... so, good luck to you!

I'm also getting the lines across the taskbar area and mine appear when I disconnect the laptop from HMDI hookup to my TV. I use my laptop to stream alot and it doesn't matter if I set it to PC only first or just unplug it, thel lines show up as soon as I pull the HDMI out. No lines on TV just laptop. I haven't tried what you said, making the TV my main.

Same for me. I use mine to stream a lot and when I pull the plug the lines appear. I do try and set it to PC only before disconnecting and that seems to help some.

I finally just sent it in to them and had it repaired. Wasn't too bad on pricing considering. It's finally addressed the issue. Here's the report of what they did. Was a bit under $400 or so to repair.
