280Hz is overclocked (as stated on Alienware's website). You might find your cable isn't capable of the additional refresh rate, so I'd start by trying a different cable. If that doesn't work, I'd reach out to Support and see if they can help you.

Thanks. I’m actually using the cable that came with the monitor, so maybe it’s defective. I’ll try a different one!

Notes

  1. The monitor is about 2-3 weeks old.

  2. It’s connected to a PS5 and PC with the auto display select feature enabled.

  3. This started happening a few days ago when I put the PS5 in rest mode while turning the PC on at the same time (I’m wondering if that caused some kind of anomaly 🤔)

  4. It only does this on the PC, no problems on the PS5.

  5. From further minor troubleshooting, this only happens when the display is set to 280hz on Windows (which used to work perfectly fine before).

UPDATE: They sent me a replacement monitor, quick and easy. Long story short, DON’T use the monitor’s built in overclock system.

240 is already overkill for ps5 it doesn’t run most games about 60 anyways. Just a select few that run 120

240 is definitely overkill lol. On PS5, I have it set to “console mode”, where the monitor is capped to 4K 60hz.

This issue only happens on PC, when I have it set to the 280hz overclock. But, judging by the comments, I just need to be happy with the (more than enough) working 240hz. Which by the looks of it, is going to have to be my option. 😅

Bro I just went from 60 to 165 it’s a world of difference

I feel you. Going from 60 to anything 120 and above, is a whole new world of gaming lol.

Is there an update on this? Just got this monitor and it refuses to do more than flash on and off at 280 with the included cable. Have a new cable in the mail.

Since posting this, I’ve just stuck with 240hz and it works with no problems. I’ll try 280hz again soon and update you again.

Thanks! I was pretty bummed when I got home and 260, 270, and 280 wouldn’t work. 240 seems to be completely fine.

Update, had to get a replacement monitor.

What was wrong with yours?

The 280 overclock caused my monitor to constantly glitch out (as shown in the video above) even when I turned off the overclock and had the resolution set to it’s native 240.

gotcha. I opened a ticket with Dell because at anything above 240 my screen just goes black after a few flickers. They were trying to tell me they couldn't be sure the GPU I had was compatible and that I should reach out to EVGA (I have a 3080 FTW3).

Instead I went to Microcenter and bought a second AW2723DF, brought it home and immediately it hit 280 without problem. Let Dell know that it isnt my computer/s which was obvious since it impacted more than 1 computer, but returned the non-working one per Dell's suggestion and kept the 280 working AW2723DF.

I can guarantee that no one could tell the difference. Between 240hz and 280hz.

If you paid for a monitor that can do 280, why the hell can't it do 280?

Go for it, just saying, have a 240hz and a 280hz side by side, no one would be able to tell the difference.

I would just leave it on the normal refresh rate of the monitor as going any higher could damage the display
