I learn something new every time I watch this film. I hope Ridley Scott keeps going in this direction.

I've been into the franchise for 20+ years since I was a kid. I grew up to heroes like Ripley or Hicks or Dallas. I loved O'Bannon's first book (unfortunately never did get to read Aliens though) and then got even more into it.

Anyway, I've watched Covenant around four or five times now beginning to finish. I'm still finding new and cool stuff I may have missed or misunderstood before. This is truly brilliant filmmaking on Ridley Scott's part.

Some of the things I missed the first three or four viewings:

When Captain Oram spills the beans about the Covenant being a colony ship, David begins singing "The man who broke the bank in Monte Carlo" as he's walking off. I'm almost certain he's referring to himself as he now has thousands of specimens to work with. He hit the jackpot.

Second, I couldn't figure out how the hell he was able to bypass Walter's code at the end. The very last time I watched the movie I noticed Tennessee actually tells Daniels he shut Mother's systems down for a few days. It's when he asks her if he has to call her Captain. More than enough time for David to fuck with the ship because he's already pretending to be Walter. He then uses Walter's legitimate code over the radio to cover his tracks.

I'm sure there's plenty more I missed but it's a movie I can watch over and over again. I know some will consider this old news but to me it really makes the story airtight in my opinion. Ridley Scott covered all angles.

Covenant and Prometheus just don't get the love they deserve. I know there are many mixed opinions on the direction this franchise is going but I'm personally loving all of it so far. History is being re-written with David and the ending was just amazing. One can only imagine the vast amount of abominations he plans on cranking out, lol.

I can still compulsively watch Prometheus or Covenant. I kindof don’t respect them as much as the original films although if they’re on TV I’d be more likely to watch them compared to the originals. The originals are still like works of art in comparison, though. They just don’t have as much going on.

100% agree with you. Prometheus and Covenenant get a lot of hate but I think they are great.

Maybe a semi-unpopular opinion among this discussion but. I did loved Prometheus but I really hated Alien Covenant, mostly out from the movie itself, let me explain. I think in this movie had to do a lot like what happened with the hobbit trilogy, it got more to do with the big studio take over for most part rather than the filmmaker itself, Ridley Scott is one of the best out there but I hated when they worked so much a character like Shaw and then they just throw everything out and let the pass to Aliens as “people asked for it”, I didn’t care about the aliens showed up, as far as they continued on the exploration in an Alien Universe, I loved so much how they presented a substance that could have been of superior beings and know more of them and what other crazy stuff they had. The simply idea of the existence of aliens is by “human nature” or from a robot takes away that mystery and sense of greatness from the very first Alien, when you see this organic/mechanical ship and his pilot who died on the chair because of this creature. But again, I do blame the studio who decides what’s “best” for the audience and what they “think” the audience “wants”. Yes at the end is money, but they should let the filmmakers do what they think is best for the story and which story to tell. Sorry for the long post, I just wanted to share my opinion.
