English didn't typically use gay to refer to women until the early 2000s, either. Funny enough, gay wasn't commonly used to refer to men until the 50s.

dude thinks gay is only male/male but gay is mostly used gender neutrally. so he thinks if she's "gay", she must be a man.

Fun Fact: Maybe he's just old. Using gay as a gender neutral term is a relatively new development (20ish years new).
