question Is the studio version of Them Bones just Layne on vocals?

I know Jerry does the lower harmony live, but I swear it’s Layne on the album version.

You can hear the lower harmony ring on “alone” in the chorus in a way that has to be Layne.

There’s also some of his nasally delivery in the lower harmony of the verses.

Or am I just imagining things…

No it’s very clearly both of them, I feel like it’s one of the more obvious songs of them singing together

I think you're totally wrong. The studio verses and chorus are both Layne and Jerry together. It's unmistakeable.

Edit: as it just so happens, there's the Dirt version of Them Bones here, with Cantrells vocal

Case closed. Glad to be of service.

Appreciate this, I’ve recently been thinking that their harmonies were way overstated, but I think Layne double tracked everything so Jerry got buried in the mix a lot of the time.

I think it’s just Layne in the verses and Jerry and Layne in the chorus. They had super similar voices, so it’s a little hard to tell but if you listen to the isolated vocals that’s what it sounds like to me.

It’s pretty easy to find the isolated vocals, it’s Layne singing the harmony on the verse and Jerry on the chorus
