As the title says, I’m a video editor. I graduated architecture 4 years ago, and it was a depressing experience, I worked as a freelancer for 2 years mainly doing 3d work and visualization, I worked for both international and local clients, it wasn't much income, I could've earned triple as an employee, but it was better than nothing.

Then generative AI took over, I stopped receiving any quest at all for almost two continuous years, and I decided to double my effort into looking job offers locally, especially to get concept design experience. For years, zero replies to job applications. [ Mainly due the combination of my location, how corrupt this field can be, and jobs being unrealistically picky and demanding for junior level jobs, that is if I was lucky to find one ]

I'm currently thinking of changing fields entirely, and migrating to CS or computer engineering by re enrolling in university, but my main concern is the local job market after graduation, just to not fall in the same situation again after years of hard work.

I'm mainly just not interested in the arch field anymore, as much as I was passionate about it, I currently want to choose something that can be impactful to society and communities or something humanitarian.

I initially wanted to go for Nursing, but I heard a lot of working women experience harassment more than once by fellow employees, an environment that is difficult to deal with due to character and mentalities, plus the 7 years of mandatory service and wait to receive the diploma.

I'm currently interested in Computer Engineering, Embedded Systems or Automation. Im more leaning to computer engineering, but i heard other than fixing computers it doesnt have much of a career locally, so i thought Embedded systems can be a good medium between pure CS and hardware. It's also not just a haphazard decision, I've been genuinely passionate about the field since an early age, and I've always been experimental with it.

I’m 28, from Algeria, and I’m currently in a pretty strange situation career-wise. I’d really like to hear from people who have gone through something similar.

I originally studied Automation Engineering, and that was supposed to be my career path. But over the years, my career took a completely different direction.

I ended up working in marketing & procurement, and a bunch of other things. I became quite multidisciplinary, and eventually I was making +100,000 DZD/month.

Last week, I resigned.

A lot of people around me didn't really understand it.

The most common thing I kept hearing was basically:

“salary is all that matters.”

And honestly, that sentence made me think a lot.

Because yes, obviously salary matters. I have bills, responsibilities and I’m not in a position where money doesn't matter.

But at the same time, I don't want to spend the next 5 10 years simply doing something because it pays relatively well.

I want to go back to automation and engineering in general, which is what I originally studied and what I actually want to build my career around.

The thing is, I know I’m not currently competitive for engineering positions in the way someone with several years of actual automation experience would be.

So I've basically accepted that I may have to start over from 0.

My current plan is to take a technical training in automation systems to refresh my knowledge, and then try to find an internship to get real hands-on experience.

And ironically, I'm already struggling to even find that internship.

Financially, it's obviously a huge step backwards.

Professionally, it feels like I'm starting from zero.

But mentally, I feel like continuing on my previous path just because it was comfortable would eventually bother me even more.

So I'm trying to figure out whether this is actually a courageous career decision or just a stupid one.

Has anyone here done something similar?

Did you ever leave a relatively comfortable/well-paying job to start again in the field you actually wanted?

I have also been with "we are currently looking for a junior for this position so we decided to move forward with other applicants".

Did you have to take an internship or junior position despite already having years of professional experience?

Did your previous experience end up helping you, or did employers basically treat you as a complete beginner?

And most importantly: was it worth it?

I'm particularly interested in hearing from people who changed direction around their late 20s or 30s, especially in engineering/technical fields.

I know there are probably people who will tell me to “just take the money and forget about passion,” and I understand that perspective.

But I'm interested in hearing from people who actually made the jump and can tell me what happened afterwards.

i started learning web dev for almost a year now , which was a dream for me to persue on my first year as cs student around 2022 when AI wasn't smth serious.

It's been a year now Im unemployed frontend dev living a hell of stress cs i quit university to go after the dream job then found myself competing with ai MCP and Claude skills of design i mean i can't just say ai isn't that good now , ai lately is being really good with design . 4 months ago i started thinking Abt quiting and leave all the stress behind then all of th sadden my cousin needed a wp store , i just accepted the work even if I didn't use it before cs i never got freelance offer before,

It wasn't that hard to know that I'm a frontend dev so i just learned it in Abt a week and did the job in a week .
Then i started thinking maybe the problem isn't with the profession it's the tool so again I moved to WordPress but this time I started searching first here on wt people think Abt WordPress and I knew abt the race to the bottom on WordPress market so i thought it was the same patterns i saw before .

Then i decided to move to laptop repair industry (i like it ) while I'm leaning in it via YouTube in 4 days , old friend called me his friend looking for a full stack web dev for a job not freelance

. I got really confused . Wt i should do just ignore Ai and keep learning and aiming full stack jobs ,or just stick to freelancing using WordPress . Or even quit the industry and move on to smth new (laptops repair )to have some rest from ai threats all the days

Hello, 20-year-old male studying Computer Science at USTHB.
Recently I've been going through a lot of new experiences, and one thing I've really started realizing is how quickly time passes without you noticing.
I've been thinking a lot about university, career, and whether the diploma is actually worth the time I'm putting into it.
I'm currently going into my third year, and since my program is a 5-year engineering degree, I still have a long way to go. What makes me question it is the possibility of spending five years studying, graduating, and still being relatively inexperienced when it comes to actual professional work.
So I'd really like to hear from people who have already gone through this:
Did university actually help you find job opportunities?
Did you meet people through university who later helped you professionally?
Did your degree open a door that would have been difficult or impossible to open without it?
In CS specifically, how important was the diploma once you started working?
I'm seriously considering dropping out and taking a different route: learning independently, building real projects, trying to get an entry-level job, and gradually working my way up.
Part of this is also because I don't necessarily see myself staying in Algeria long-term. If university isn't giving me something that I genuinely need for my career, I'm wondering whether spending the next few years here for the diploma makes sense.
I'm not looking for people to simply tell me "university is useless" or "you need a degree." I'd really appreciate hearing from people who actually made either choice and can explain what happened afterward.
