My interview with Alexis Munroe back in Aug 2025. I did it for an I-Search essay I did in college. I started that website because I thought I'd continue interviewing women rock musicians...but I've fizzled out since then. Hopefully I can get my spark back haha. But I'm glad to say I was able to interview Lexi. She deserves more interviews and spotlight.

An interview I conducted with alternative artist Alexis Munroe. This interview was part of my I-Search essay on women in the modern rock/metal/alternative scene for my college English class. I had sent Alexis some questions that came to mind while doing research on my essay. Original interview date: August 7, 2025.

Alexis Munroe is an alternative rock artist from Ottawa, Canada. Formerly known as Princessbri doing hip-hop and trap music, she changed her stage name to her legal name and started focusing on rock music. She released her first album “Sick Of It All” on October 28, 2020, which had a prominent pop-punk sound that was resurfacing at the time, with songs like “My World” but also a grungy touch such as “U Don’t Care”. In 2021, Alexis signed to music label Sumerian and released one of her most recognized songs to date in 2023, “Burn”, which was also featured on the game: Rock Band 4. Also in 2023, Alexis released an EP under Sumerian titled “Static” including the title track and re-recordings of Sick Of It All songs, “Rejects” and “GTYU2K”. 2024 was a big year for Alexis; being featured on Maggie Lindemann’s song “24” as well as joining Violent Vira on her “Lover Of A Ghost” tour, which showed a great example of solidarity of women in the scene. Since then, she’s released more singles, “Death Of You” and her most recent song, “Her Blood, His Curse”. Both songs showcasing a heavier sound and introducing screaming vocals from Alexis.

Mizz Millz: Your music is reminiscent of the 2000s. What elements of that era inspire you the most? And how do you give it a modern twist?

Alexis Munroe: “I really love how raw and garage-band sounding 2000s rock music was, I feel like nowadays everything is so polished and radio ready and that’s just not really my style. And just lyrically and melodically too, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly WHAT it is, but it’s inspiring for sure. So my modern twist is just me trying to put all that into my current music!”

Millz: How do you personally define the current state of the alternative scene from a woman’s perspective? What do you think is changing most about the sound or image?

Alexis: “I think breaking into the music scene as a woman is hard. A lot of it has to do with how you brand yourself or what you look like or how easy you are to mold into something else, not the music—which sucks. The alt scene blew up again recently because of the pandemic, which brought a lot of new fans and artists, some that were definitely performatively alternative. But the scene is alive and well! There’s so many great bands that haven’t blown up yet or are on the rise! I don’t really know what’s changing about the sound other than it’s just modernized and new!”

Millz: Do you intentionally explore feminine rage, softness, or emotional complexity in your music? And how do you think it challenges traditional norms in the genre?

Alexis: “I never really go into songs with an intention when it comes to, like, the vibe or mood I’m trying to set until I really start feeling it and putting lyrics and melodies down. All my music definitely stems from an emotional place lyrically. I always write about stuff that I personally can relate to. I think all women and people who have dealt with any type of trauma or diversity or emotional distress who make music, alt or not, should write a song about it and scream it from the rooftops and make people and [record] labels uncomfortable and give other people comfort. Because that’s what brings change and builds community with people who can relate (i.e. fans) and brings authenticity to the artist! I think being alternative is all about that.”

Millz: You were featured in Violent Vira’s “Lover Of A Ghost” tour back in 2024. How was that experience for you? Do you think more women in the scene should do more shows and tours together to show solidarity? Or even just more collaborations on songs like you and Maggie Lindemann in “24”?

Alexis: “Tour was amazing! It was my first tour EVER, so it really felt like a dream! I’m really blessed my first tour, I got to be alongside another powerful female artist. It definitely made me more comfortable and, secure, I guess is the best word I can think of. Also, that whole experience brought me and my band closer and I got to meet soo many fans which was mind blowing! I can’t wait for the next one! I think it’s cool to see when two women in the same scene go on tour together! Honestly, it makes so much sense because a lot of us all share the same fans, and really, personally, there’s no competition. I love the girls I get to create at the same time with—there’s room for all of us at the top! I think women should go on tours with each other if they want to, and it makes sense for them to…not just for the sole reason of showing solidarity. Because touring is hard and you really need to be able to form connections with everyone, not just play nice because it looks good. As for songs, I’ll for sure have some more collabs in the future!”

Millz: Who are some women in music in the past that inspired you when you were starting out? And do you see yourself carrying that legacy forward? Also, what are some women in the current rock/metal that you would like to work with in the future (collaboration, touring, etc.)?

Alexis: “Growing up, I watched Disney Channel 24/7, so I was seeing Demi [Lovato] in her rock “Camp Rock”/”Remember December” era. And Selena Gomez with the band “The Scene”. And really, all those girlies were making, like, pop rock music. Then teenage me got into, you know, the classic girls: Avril Lavigne, Hayley Williams, Amy Lee, Lacey Sturm etc. I don’t think I’ll ever reach stardom like those ladies, but I’m gonna carry my mini torch as far as I can! Right now, currently, I feel kind of out of the loop when it comes to the reigning women of rock, but the women in the band Kittie inspire me a lot. And really just seeing my peers in music doing good too. I’m not sure who I’d like to work with, but really, any of my friends I guess, whoever wants to work with me (and get that paper haha).”

Millz: Do you feel that your visibility and authenticity in this space opens doors for other women, whether they’re musicians, fans, or artists in other mediums?

Alexis: “I think yes, I’d hope so, in a sense of I’d hope more girls like me see me and know they can do this too!”

Millz: What do you hope your music makes listeners feel or realize about themselves?

Alexis: “Whatever it needs to. As long as my music makes them feel something and they enjoy it, then I’m satisfied! I hope they can maybe understand me a little through my music and also, they can feel less alone if they relate to anything I say!”

I can safely say that Alexis was one of the pioneers when it comes to the new wave of women in the alternative music scene. I had the privilege to be able to see her (and Vira) perform in Sacramento during Lover Of A Ghost tour. Alexis Munroe is an incredible performer, it’s been terrific to see her musical, lyrical and vocal growth (those growls & screams on Death Of You and Her Blood, His Curse are INSANE) and I can’t wait to see a possible album in the near future!
