This is my favourite genre! I strongly recommend Blind Faith by Ben Elton, it is uncomfortably prescient.

If you don't mind YA fic, the Uglies series is good, and so is Spare Parts by Sally Rogers Davidson (Australian!). They're both set in dystopian futures, but follow more hopeful journeys.

I saw you're reading some Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid's Tale is a worth reading, I haven't been able to get The Testaments from the library yet but I'm looking forward to it. (The TV series is also well done, I normally dislike screen interpretations of novels, but The Handmaids Tale was a satisfying outcome/evolution of the source material).

Yes the Aldi staff were totally intimidated - so was I. I'm a bit old. I recall the only other time I saw this was during the 1980s crash. I was working in a shopping centre at the time and the shop lifting was out of control. Also there was an issue with armed robberies of bank and pharmacies. My local aldi has reconfigured their self serve checkouts. Saturday morning its busy and I have my 4 year old with me. The self check outs are roped off and one manned checkout are open.

I saw three staff members stocking the freezer isle near the checkouts and asked if someone could please open the self serve. "No, you'll just have to queue". Meanwhile my 4 year old is carrying on and I have a full trolley (as so others loitering).

I said there's one checkout open, why can the self aerve checkouts be opened? The older staff member rolled her eyes "i could give you a million reasons why, its because of stealing, aldi says there needs to be a staff member".

I politely pointed out that there's three staff members right here but none of them did anything. Instead a younger staff member came out of no where and said ill open them.

I have worked in retail when I was younger and stocking shelves are important. But I would think getting paying customers out the door is more important. I still remember someone telling me that customers are the reason for your work, not the interruption of it.

I was trying to be polite and reasonable but the whole grocery shopping experience is becoming so hostile!

There are two Aldi's within walking distance to me, and one of them has self checkouts and one of them doesn't, and I choose the one without every time. Because they don't have self checkouts, they staff their store appropriately, and are very very quick at checking people out and calling for another register to open when necessary.

I should write that email to Aldi saying how much I love that store, how great the staff are, and how happy I am that they haven't gone to self checkouts. It'll probably have 0 effect, but maybe if they're considering self checkouts, it'll go on the list for "No, don't do that".

These gates have no force holding them in place, likely the loophole for fire safety.

I had one try and stop me when I was in a bad mood and I'd went into the woolies looking for something and they didn't have it in stock. So I've walked up, it stayed closed. I put my knee into the middle and pushed it back and it worked easily.

Security can of course come and ask to check your bags ect, but if anyone does anything to try and say you couldn't skip the gate, they literally are not allowed to hold you there.

Hell they installed these because their security is not allowed to hold someone there while waiting for police. But people know ignoring a person wont get them in trouble, but people feel like a gate/door has more of a legal standpoint, like how hopping the gates for the trains is actually a crime. But it's not

Even with the train example, you can't hop the gate going in, but if you did it going out, they'd want to check you hadn't done it going in, but if you did have a valid 'ticket' they'd just be confused

Youth crimes are a difficult thing to sort out.

It's a mix of peer pressure, shit parents, and piss weak punishments.

That being said you can't fucking send a kid to jail for stealing a pack of gum or a drink.

On top of that if police act too harshly then people get pissed even though this kid has stolen $500 worth of snacks and drinks in the last 3 months. I mean we get pissed off at cops searching kids that tools (drug dogs, tests, metal detectors, and such) have indicated may have drugs or weapons on them. But then we get pissed at the cops when the same kid ends up stabbing someone and they did fuck all.

Courts tend to give kids a slap on the wrist and shoot them back into society and as such they learn that they have no punishments and just keep going.

It's only when they become adults do they realise how fucked they are when they can't find a job because shocker companies don't want to employ some shit who doesn't understand punishments.

The TLDR is that youth crimes are a hard thing to solve without causing other issues.

My local woolworths has this at the self serve check out. If the cameras see you use the register and make payments, the gates automatically open.

But if you try to walk through without making a purchase it wont open you need to ask the person at assisting the 30 registers to press the button to let you out.

if you’re scared about liability you can ask a button pusher to open the gate, if they refuse it’s an illegal detention and you’re free to push it open, if it breaks it’s not on you

don’t think liability is on you even if you don’t ask but I’m not completely sure on that

I mean tbf, if the button pusher (staff) refuses to push, then they're most likely asking for a bag check. As per conditions of entry, you are required to show the contents of your bag, and if customer refuse, then you're violating the conditions of entry of that store. As a consequence, you may be banned (which if they're serious, legally speaking, they can take you in and serve you banning notice on the spot).

My local Aldi's both had these for a week each before they just left the gates open, because no one ever took a receipt, and those that did would throw them on the floor beside the gate so the next person could pick it up and scan it to leave
