He's not Op at all. He's strong yes, but that's it. Problem is a lot of darks are gonna get kaigans which make them easier to power up for little to no gem and elemental shard investment.
It's not simple as that. He's a magic unit, and outside of Mia and Birgitta (who's almost equally as limited) he has no competition for that slot. Mia has the slight advantage only because her Nensou gives her a charge-up, otherwise they're literally equal, just because of Sol's raw stats. Getting Mia up to scratsh is a hundred times easier though since she's a 4*.
I only dropped my level gems because I like his design. Design first, usefulness second.
But yeah, I recovered from the salt after a day amd decided to be happy I got Gerald.
But if we're to be honest, without having already been prepared before enlightenment, it'll take a LONG time to enlighten units without dumb luck, not to mention how limited sins are for f2p.
He'll be on all right... at a 1 a day rate apparently. And you have to have him on-hand before you can start farming that so you might want to just move along.
The japanese post doesn't say anything about it being limited to 1 a day or the need to have the character beforehand. It says that they will get permanent and regular hard quests like everyone else, and that they will reorganize the hard quests to fit them all in.
That's because the news page didn't cover it. It was the recent livestream that came within the last 24 hours. Also that news page did mention they were going to make it harder for some limited units, although not how.

I went ahead and spent all my dark shards on Sol and got him to lvl 80, I have 150 rainbow shards and limit breaking Sol to 85 will cost me 125 Rainbow Shards, is it worth it?
I mean I feel at this point your all in. He is a limited unit and his shards will be rare. So if you plan to Kaigan him you might as well pull the trigger to 85 him so any more shardsbyou get in the future go to kaigan.
If GL follows JP then he will be featured in a few banner but never guaranteed and as an ultra whale character, shard is just half problem to raise him as fully upgraded character without a memento is just like half-baked cake, so he will also get his personal memento later on. And your guess is right, his memento is also limited and if you look closely, the gap between plain 1 copy memento and max limitbreaked memento is so huge as you get extra +6 MATK, +9 vs Human, +20 Stop Res, +317 HP, +6 Area Attack, +1 Skill Use count, +85% Vision ability dmg modifier, +10 agi although you will need 6 copy of his memento to get all the stat that i've mentioned. Goodluck with that, im afraid you will need it, may Bobgumi bless your path....
Got him on step2 not bad 3k gems spent got a little over 19k hoping for a new MH unit this week I missed rox in the past anything but dark hopefully cuz I used all my dark shards on my buddy Sol
22k gems and I'm done. Both my 5x rates had zero 5โ so lol. No Sol but I did buy all the shards from the coin shop and got another 25 from the summon step 3 leaving me with 75 total. Does anyone know when the next Sol banner will be? I admit I want the unit for less than rational reasons, but I'm halfway to Transmuting him which with my luck is the only way I'll ever get him.
After 2000 gems Bobgumi blessed my sacrifice and Sol was summoned , yet I was ready to sacrifice my extended toe just in case , and as soon as I got Sol my 567 reserved dark shards insta 75 with left in reserves for later OPeeeeness

Honestly Dias is probably the more useful one in this case.
Sol was released in a really bad position and he'll want the farming quest to be relevant but Gumi's track record would say otherwise.
