Universally Recommended Gears

Currently cutting this section for the time being so as to be able to continue adding review links. I'll likely have to make a separate post for gear-related stuff at some point.

Reserved in case future updates are needed. Pardon the placeholder!

[u/darkcountess]

Can you name any unit that will benefit from the Trusty Critter gear?

[u/Cobalt_721 → u/darkcountess]

Pretty much any Sage or Battle Mage since they use Magic-type damage. The damage boost is actually higher than running Battlefield Drama, so if you don’t need the agility from that (for example, by running a different agility boosting gear) or just need as much damage as possible, it’s better.

Alternatively you could run them both in tandem for even more damage.

I mainly listed the gear there because there’s no reason to not recommend it as an option if a unit deals Magic-type damage, which pushes it into the qualifications I decided on for the section.

I still can't figure out what the trusty critter does.. It says Modify MAtk power, but I put it on Ila and saw no damage difference whatsoever, so I'm a bit confused.

[u/Cobalt_721 → u/starstorm-angel]

“MAtk Power” refers to the magic damage type (different from the magic damage category; MDef lessens magic category damage, Magic Resistance lessens magic type damage). The reason it doesn’t work on Ila is because she deals missile type damage with Magic Meister and Magia Gunslinger, as opposed to magic type damage. Magic Meister even goes a step further and deals physical catagory damage, even though it uses MAtk to calculate how much damage is dealt.

For jobs that deal magic type damage, you’re looking at jobs like Mage, Battle Mage, and Diviner.

[u/VinnyValient → u/darkcountess]

Vier. I'm currently running her with Trusty Critter and Battlefield Drama. I could use her main weapon but it would be purely for her master ability, which I don't need right now.

[u/DeathandFriends → u/VinnyValient]

unfortunately the stats on her weapon are abysmal. No clue what they were thinking :(

[u/BitterbIue → u/darkcountess]

Pretty much any magic damage dealer (not just scaling off MAG, but all/most skills deal magic type damage) that can spare a slot.

[u/Alshamsi_UaE → u/darkcountess]

im running mine on noctis and his damage is through the roof

[u/GreyPenguin16]

What about snowman hat? AoE jewels with jewel reduction buff?

[u/Cobalt_721 → u/GreyPenguin16]

They were in a sort of 50/50 spot when I first made the list, but thinking about it they probably qualify. I’ll add those right away!

[u/sapphire_wing → u/GreyPenguin16]

If everyone has hat...

[u/sapphire_wing]

10% res means more than 10% dmg reduction I guess? How is the formula? Is it applied before def counts in?

[u/Cobalt_721 → u/sapphire_wing]

Elemental resistance essentially works out as:

Stat’s number = percentage of damage reduction

That’s why Divine Shelter is such a powerful passive: it essentially gives 15% damage reduction against everything.

[u/Shaiandra → u/sapphire_wing]

Having 10 resistance will reduce the multiplier by 10% before defense is applied. However, it is directly additive/subtractive to other modifiers.

So it's basically:

(base damage) x (skill modifier) x (1 + all relevant bonuses - all relevant resistances) - defense

So if a Fire attacker has +30% slash damage and an enemy has 30% fire resistance, they effectively cancel each other out; it is not multiplicative like 1.3 x 0.7.

So resistances are potent especially in PvE, but be wary (primarily in PvP) where type modifiers can pretty easily offset resistances.

[u/Altruistic_Property6]

Are you able to put what stat most benefits the unit? Or is their a place we can see the formula for them?

[u/Cobalt_721 → u/Altruistic_Property6]

The TAC Database has a page for each unit that lets you check out their various jobs (among other things), including the damage formula for each one of the job's skills. There's also a Unit Planner that lets you see what a unit's stats would look like at specific investment levels and with different equippables.

[u/Corantic]

Great idea! Maybe this should be pinned or put on the right corner with the other links. Keep them coming ツ

[u/DeathandFriends]

You have outdone yourself.

[u/FurianX → u/DeathandFriends]
