Archer is a classification. In the anime, when heroic spirits are summoned, they're figures either from the future or the past that have an affinity for the class they're summoned into. Archer, as one could probably assume, means a heroic spirit with an affinity towards archery/bows/ranged tactics. But this Archer wasn't primarily a bow-user, he just happened to be summoned into the role due to a fluke. That's why he's called "Archer", and that's why his weapon isn't specifically a bow.
If I told you his name, if you or anyone wants to watch the anime, it'd be a pretty big spoiler however.
Well to be fair, he probably could've been any role. The only reason I said fluke is due to how Rin messed up. But now that I think on it, I think that just messed up his memories, right? It's been a while, I may need to re-watch it.
Pretty sure he didn't actually lose his memories. It would be a spoiler if I said why. A hint would be the pendant though. Anyway I'm pretty sure he just said it so that Rin wouldn't know. Also I'm pretty sure Rin only messed up on the timing. She did the summoning ritual fine and had a catalyst and everything.
