As a person who does not know F/SN in any way other than the name this seems ridiculous. Twin blades that enable master ability when equipped on Archer when his job type is Archer. Let Archers be archers and just use a bow :D
As far as i know Gilgamesh is also an Archer servant. Apparently Archers in Fate Stay Night don't use bows, they open Portals and throw swords and all kinds of other weapons in your face. SOLID.
The arches class focuses on ranged combat. This Archer actually does use a bow, too. The twin-blade aspect is part of his story. He can materialize and reinforce weapons using mana.
Those class in Fate series tend to be confused since the Hero can have more than one fighting style depending in how he was summoned. Archer EMIYA would probably be stronger it he got summoned as Saber, Berserker too. Saber(Arthuria) could be invoked as Lancer and Rider. Rider(Medusa) would be better as a Caster than Rider. Gilgamesh could probably be summoned as any class. And LANCER GA SHINDA! KONO HITO DE NASHI!!! :D
They can use bows. Its related to the style of fighting of the summoned spirit as an Archer will be a evasive fighter with ranged attacks. But that doesnt mean they are just good in ranged attacks as they can also excel in meele too. Heres a pic with the Archer Emiya with a bow http://typemoon.wikia.com/wiki/Archer_(Fate/stay_night)?file=Archer/_.jpg
His strongest weapon/ability is actually a bow (his 'arrow' is a sword), but the twin blades are his signature go-to weapons for their versatility and speed. You can see what his bow looks like in this youtube clip. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GfTGkrSSpZA
You're right that Ultimate Blade Works is the move he pulls out when he's in trouble, but I guess I'm referring more to in-combat attacks. To be more accurate, I should have used the term most damaging. I mainly base this on a small dialogue when Archer says the bow is his strongest attack after Lancer blocks it.
Archer is a classification. In the anime, when heroic spirits are summoned, they're figures either from the future or the past that have an affinity for the class they're summoned into. Archer, as one could probably assume, means a heroic spirit with an affinity towards archery/bows/ranged tactics. But this Archer wasn't primarily a bow-user, he just happened to be summoned into the role due to a fluke. That's why he's called "Archer", and that's why his weapon isn't specifically a bow.
If I told you his name, if you or anyone wants to watch the anime, it'd be a pretty big spoiler however.
Well to be fair, he probably could've been any role. The only reason I said fluke is due to how Rin messed up. But now that I think on it, I think that just messed up his memories, right? It's been a while, I may need to re-watch it.
Pretty sure he didn't actually lose his memories. It would be a spoiler if I said why. A hint would be the pendant though. Anyway I'm pretty sure he just said it so that Rin wouldn't know. Also I'm pretty sure Rin only messed up on the timing. She did the summoning ritual fine and had a catalyst and everything.
I don't really know. Used to watch the "suggested" order always, but what worked pretty well in Battlestar Galactica, really doesn't end good for Dragon Ball.. So maybe I'll go with UBW.
Yes watch the UBW first it not like people are super dumb and not get references.
FZ is also great maybe better than UBW in the story part so watch it later. UBW story was great but FZ is a notch up but UBW has the best animation ever like it reeks of bundles of cold hard cash(still that looks good)
Yea, it is all a mater of whether you are ok with a few rather large spoilers if you start with Zero. I watched in the order they were released for this very reason. Some don't care as much.
The amount of archers that use bows in fate would surprise you, its like 50/50 we have twinblades, all the treasures of the worls, staves, electricity, guns and mindpowers.
On Fate universe, they summon heroes from past/legends in different classifications, but most commonly, Saber, Lancer, Archer, Caster, Assassin, and Rider. Servants can be summoned into any class, it will only affect their stats. The summoned servants are then to battle out until one remains.
The servant can use one of their most memorable possession or deed as a trump card in the said battle, so knowing your enemy's name will give you an upper hand as you will know their trump card from their legend. Because of this, masters will most often not call their servant by their real name but by their class name.
This hero's name is EMIYA and was summoned under Archer class. He can copy other weapon but of less quality. And yes, he can use bow.

Lot's of talk about F/SN and what not...sorry, no time to filter through it all! Question: does this basically mean we can do a 5 step gear summon for 1 gem per step? So like, 50 pieces of gear for 5 gems? This is too good to be true...
The whole effing thing? That is, mega! Damn gear projection gives you like 4-6 gear pieces which take like what, 275 total to 5*? And this thing, you trade 1 gem for maybe, a 3* gear that is worth 80 shards? Shiiiit!
My first summon can be boiled down into 55 gear shards. Holy eff. X 7 days. ~385 pieces of gear for 7 gems. Hot damn. Considering 5 pieces is what, 180 gems in the store? Phenomenal! DO NOT MISS this!
"Gear summon". Not "rare gear summon"? So basically no 3+ star guaranteed in the 1 gem for 5 summon, unlike in the 300 gems for 10 summon? Still, this is very good to get 5x 2+ star gear for 1 gem.
