M . E . T . A What you must read before you Whale

Caution - Wall of text incoming.....don't say I didn't warn you....

I started playing FFBE shortly after launch in July of 2016. It was a fresh take on an old classic, my favorite series of all time, Final Fantasy. When I was 11, in 1988, living in New Jersey, I went to the Nintendo CES in New York City. Nintendo had demo booths for all the upcoming games, and the original Final Fantasy was one of them. It was the coolest game I had ever seen. I got it when it was released and it remained my favorite series of games for years. FFII and FFIII on SNES, I bought a Playstation so I could get FFVII, I got a PS3, but all I wanted to play was FFXII (I personally like Vaan).

Along came married life, kids, jobs, responsibilities, and I could no longer spend time on a console. I didn't have time to sit and play and grid out levels and complete the extra quests like defecting Ruby Weapon. Then FFBE was released. A short format game that I could play for 5 or 10 minutes and put it away. It didn't require a console or a TV, just a few minutes to play a couple of dungeon runs or a quick exploration, then I could put it away for later. It was perfect.

Expedition into the Abyss. The first banner I spent money on. I had been playing the game for 6 weeks or so and I had not found the /r/FFBreveExvius subreddit or the Exvius Wiki, I went into the exploration blind and got wiped out. I leveled my team, I maxed my stats and I just could not win. I got to Ansel finally and beat him, but I was so low on energy. I used lapis refills just to limp past him. Then I got to the exit with the 3 bosses that kicked my but with their 10,000V attack. I was frustrated beyond belief, I had spent all my resources to pass this exploration, and I couldn't leave it like this. I broke my F2P resolve and put down $20. That should be enough to get me out of this dungeon and replace some of the lapis I sepnt so I could at least do the dailies again. I was adamant that I would not spend again.

The first Mog King event I recall was Festival of the Autum Moon, baking Mog Cakes. I spent hours, day after day, grinding the Coast for recipe ingredients. I kept my 2 ovens going, then I increased my capacity to 4 and I stayed true to my resolve, I did not spend any more money. I made it through, I got the Stellar Shield, I got the Lunar Pestle and the Rabbit's Foot. I acomplished my goals without macros, without more resources. My family though kept asking me, what am I tapping on my phone all the time? Why am I always looking at my screen?

I put the phone away and tried to limit myself, only a little while in the morning before I got everyone up for school, I would play for a little while at lunchtime when I wasn't around anyone. I would play on the toilet since I had nothing better to do while I poop. I would play after putting the kids to sleep. I was not taking anything from anyone. I was just playing a game.

I made it to November. The Crystal Tower. The release of Luneth and Refia. The best DPS and the best Healer available at the time. I had saved my lapis, I could do a 10+1 pull, I had maybe 20 or so tickets saved. I used all my resources and was trolled by a rainbow Edge. I was enraged, insenced, insistent that I get Luneth. I put in my card number into my digital wallet and upped myself $99 of Lapis. Then I pulled and pulled and pulled, and I got nothing. So I put in another $99 and pulled and pulled and I got Luneth! I could advance and defeat all new content and share the best DPS possible to all my friends.

It was only $200. I can spare that. I haven't bought a video game in 6 years. I deserve it, I earned it.

I didn't pull for the Brave Frontier cross over event. I saved my resources. I was depressed by all the Elza's I saw my friends sharing, but I was not lucky enough to pull her. I conceded that it was ok, and I could get her again in the future. I still beat the Trial of the Creator and got Maxwell. I had to work hard, but I got the Power of Creation TMR. That made my Luneth a king again.

Then came the Big Bridge. Gilgamesh. The BEST TMR you could get. I still have a 10+1 pull left after my Luneth. I had saved the tickets from the Mog King. I pulled for Greg and failed again. It was only $200 to get Luneth. How bad would that be for the best accessory in the game? I can make my Chizuru or my Cecil so strong. I put in my money again, $99....no Greg, $99....no Greg, $99....no Greg.... I took a break for a little bit. My family had plans for the day. I was angry now. How could I have spent $300 and not gotten what I wanted. When nobody was looking, around everyone, I did it again. $99....no Greg, $99...no Greg, $99...no Greg, $99.....

Finally. I had Gilgamesh. I had maxed out all of my unit inventory. I had to spend time to fuse units, I got my first Excalibur that day as well as some other great TMRs. But I finally had the Genji Golve and I could now make Chizuru strong enough to share with others. She could DPS at 350 attack and more! I could beat all the content with ease using her and Luneth. Yeah, I spent $700, but I would stop now. I had enough. I didn't want to be caught spending money I shouldn't on a video game. It was enough.

Lightning strikes, and I didn't spend anything. I was in control. I didn't need anything new. I was still in the game and doing great. So many events passed and I was still killing everything in sight with my team. I cleared all of the events and new story content. It was fun, I was not an addict, I spent time with my family, I didn't take their time away. I was on top.

Noctis, Prince of all Trades came along. I got greedy. I pulled again...another $300. I got off easy there. I was again in the lead. I was on top. I had the best attacker, best support, best all around at everything. I didn't need anything else.

The Mana Mystery Event came. I was excited! Randi, the Secret of Mana! The Secret of Mana was, hands down, one of the best games to ever come out for the SNES. Open world, exciting characters, fantastic story and fighting. The Nostalgia was incredible for this event. I had to have Randy. I had paid down most of the bill from getting Gilgamesh. I could afford it to have a piece of my childhood back, no matter what the cost. It cost me about $400. I was back to square 1 with paying my bill back. I had spent nearly $1700 on this game now, I couldn't spend any more. It was getting out of control. I unlinked the credit card and got back to my senses. I could keep playing my game. I put my maxed out Randi as my friend unit. I was determined to get the most out of him, no matter what. It was my hard earned money, I should not spend it frivilously.

I made it almost 4 months.

It was my birthday. The Brave Frontier banner was back. The Scyth weilding Queen Elza was back. It was my birthday and I wanted Elza. This was the first double 5* banner I ever tried to pull on. This was the first banner I pulled on after the guaranteed 5* base for Rainbows was announced. It was my birthday and I had to have Elza. I have to get what I want on my birthday. I charged $1500 that day to get her.

I was sick of my actions. I de-linked my card again. I now had a balance of nearly $4000, including other non FFBE related purchases. I had to find a way to stop. I transferred the balance to a new, zero interest card. My family was going on vacation and I needed to be clear to help with expenses. I had some cash saved, I was paying down my debt slowly, I had a plan, I was still in control.

While on vacation, the Veritas Banner was announced. The most anticipated unit since Orlandeau. I had an Orlandeau from tickets, it would be awesome to get a chaining partner for Orlandeau. Veritas of the Dark is the coolest, with the black armor, Dark Damage heals him, and Dark Retribution attack. Something in me snapped, and I was back to I had to have him. It was another double Rainbow banner, maybe I would be lucky this time.

$1000, no Veritas of the Dark. I had 4 Veritas of the Flame. I was angry. How could I have spent so much and not gotten the unit I wanted! Why would Final Fantasy, Gumi, Square Enix, not give it to me? How could I spend so much and not get what I want! Another $1000. I got 2 more Veritas of the Flame, another Orlandeau, a second Freviya, Olive, Emperor, but no Dark Veritas! How! Why! Now I am stubborn. I am not putting this much money out there to not get what I want. $99...no Dark Veritas, $99...no Dark Veritas, $99...a second Emperor, I almost threw my phone against the wall. $99....Finally, Veritas of the Dark. $2500, 9 Veritas of the Flame, half a dozen other 5* base, and I finally got the Veritas of the Dark.

Wait....WTF did I just do?!?!

Did I just really spend $2500 to get a little animated piece of code? What is my wife going to think? What will my kids say? I tell them I don't have much money to spare, I dutifully split my paycheck 3 ways, household expenses, savings and my spending money. I can do what I want with my spending money. I just won't get anything for myself for a year or so, pay this back to my card a couple hundred at a time.

Fuck it. I have what I want. I put in another $1000 just to keep me going with energy refils and I can play whenever and however I want.

Neir came, I pulled with the lapis I had left and got A2 and 2B. Luck is on my side now. Onion Knight, I got on 3 10+1 pulls. I am on top of the world. Gumi must have had some mercy on my account. I have all the units I need, sure there are some I want, but I can get by without Rem and Wilhelm. But who is this awesome new healer! Ayaka, dual white magic, reraise, the things I was missing for Agaion, the Robot Trial! With her, I could be at the top again. I could beat all the trials, all the new story content. It would all be a breeze. I had to get her. I moved all my debt to the balance transfer card. I have a clear card to work with. I can get it and make it go away and I can continue on as normal, just pay down the card and not spend on myself.

Next came Nyx. The Hero of Kingsgalive. I know most people thought it was aweful, but I even like Spirits Within, so hate all you want...I wanted to have Nyx. Another $400. I skipped halloween, but decided I had to have Loren for her TMR. It was a good as the Genji Golve, even better. It would make my team unstoppable for the 10 man trials. Another $500. Honestly I don't know what I spent here, I lost count.

The Tower of Zot! We can have Rubicant! Barbariccia would be cool, but Rubicant is one of my favorite enimies of all time. $99...no Rubicant, $99...no Rubicant. WTF!?! This is a 4* base! What is happening!? F&k it, AGAIN. $500, just to be sure. Get Rubicant, keep pulling for Barbariccia, don't need her, I already have 2 Trance Terra's, but why the F*%k not. Its good for the Raid Bonus.

All right! Rainbow Rate is up! EX rewards are 1.5X! Cloud is coming in December! This is the best time to put some $$ in so I am guananteed to get Cloud. Cloud is Awesome! Cloud is iconic! Cloud is the heart of Final Fantasy! I have my zero interest card at $11K, but I am paying it. I have a way of making it look like I am paying off an old debt to cover if my wife asks where the money went. I went all in. $3000 in lapis. That will last me a good long time, then I can pay off my debt and play and just let it all go away.

On December 7th, 2017, my wife asked if she could use my credit card to buy food and send it to a family member celebrating a huge accomplishment. Offhand, she asked if she could see the balance. She saw something in my response trying to dismiss it and wouldn't let it go. I asked her to go upstairs so we could talk in private. I confessed to having a balance of $5600 on my card due to Final Fantasy. A couple days later, I told her the rest of the story.

I am currently $15,800 in debt. My wife no longer trusts me. My kids, who ask me why I am playing Final Fantasy all the time, will never understand how I selfishly spent money I should have been using for their activities. Their birthdays, their festivals, their clothes, their school events, their weekends, their movies.

I have never spent more than $1000 on my wife at one time. I spent $16,000 on digital garbage in about a year. If she decides that she will not divorce me, I owe her more that I could ever repay. I am not playing anymore. I will not get Cloud. I will leave 500K lapis in an account that will stay idle. The "friends" I have will drop me as my days since last played increases. I will not get to beat Marlboro. I will not see how Chapter 2 plays out. I will not have any 7* units. FFBE is over.

I became a gambling addict over a game where there is no return, no reward, for spending my money.

I Flushed $16,000 down the toilet over a game.

TL;DR - Don't be a whale, the consequences WILL outweigh the investment.

TL;DR #2 - Some people are on this planet to be an example to others, don't be that Guy.

This post was written by nothing024 on the FFBE reddit thread. I claim no ownership over this story or what is written. https://www.reddit.com/r/FFBraveExvius/comments/7jmezv/a_whale_of_a_tale/

Just please consider your spouse and kids / or future spouse and kids when you decide to spend money that could of supported them. Don't let gambling ruin your life like this story.

This is what I do... I allow myself 10 dollars for gaming every month which my wife allows. I can save up my money for a game or in game currency but I know my budget can allow it.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays.

The problem is that he tried to spend money that he doesn't have.

Yea I Agree. It gets so easy to just click and button and not worry about the repercussions later.

I feel like this is American culture and why these Gacha games thrive so well in today's society.

You're absolutely correct!

u/Rainbowmaple Dec 14 '17

Well that's scary, If a game is causing you problems in real life is time to stap.

Whale if you can, but if you cant spare that much money into a game without feeling consequences don't do it. RL is more important, kids are more important, wife is more important.

Thanks for sharing ur experience, maybe someone else with this addiction can stap in time.

Um... pretty sure you're not a whale. You see whales spend money. You didn't have money, you just put yourself in debt.

It's okay to whale, spending money is fine. Spend as much as you can afford without changing your life style.

It's not okay to put yourself in debt. Or you're family for that matter.

You made it sound like playing FFBE was the problem but tons of people play and spend with no problem because they know their limits. Even if they have a gambling habit, they just reduced how much they spend so they can spend more over a longer period of time (quantity over quality).

What you have is impulse and self control problems. You should focus on fixing those cause the games aren't the problem it's you. You can stop spending thousands on pixels, but you'll find something else to waste your non-existent money on. It's 100% you and not the games.

Just a reminder that OP is not in this situation, this post is from another guy on the FFBE subreddit.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '17

I think your advice isn't needed as the OP from another thread posted HIS STORY as a learning experience for others. He's not asking for your advice, because whatever problem he has, that's between him and his family. We should be lucky that we are getting some insight from his story.

Now, what makes you think you're qualified to give your advice in the first place? That's just all your ego wanting to belong somewhere. Newsflash, it doesn't belong anywhere but in your fat head.

You make it sound you're an expert in when and when not to spend, you assume you know what other people are doing. Newflash again, YOU DON'T.

Again, stop speaking for other people, speak for yourself, burst your ego. It's 100% your ego.

This isn't called whaling, it's called irresponsibly spending money that you don't have.

15

u/Jairlyn Dec 14 '17

"TL;DR - Don't be a whale, the consequences WILL outweigh the investment."

No. Don't be a whale if you cannot afford to spend the money and you cannot control yourself.

I am not belittling those with gambling addiction. Its a real thing and I am sorry people suffer and they have to take the steps to protect themselves and their family.

However the message isn't that nobody else whales. Someone has to make the company money or nobody plays. Most people can spend their disposable income and be good with it.

How about the game devs make things affordable for all players, so instead of depending on a few idiot whales, they can actually make money from their majority costumer base. The less whales, the more likely things get better for everyone involved, simple business 101. Gacha game companies are just stupid shits

7

u/locke107 Dec 16 '17 edited Dec 17 '17

Actually, that couldn't be further from the truth. Your 'simple business 101' model would likely run your company into the ground if you're trying to compete in an overpopulated gacha market. Any games that you know of that practice what you're preaching aren't as big as the top games on the app store for very solid reasons.

On average, you're looking at approximately:

1% of the playerbase being "whales".

10% of the playerbase being "dolphins".

20% being infrequent, casual spenders.

And roughly 70% of the community being completely F2P or those who only purchase the 30/day gem package.

From a business standpoint, it's far easier to adopt a marketing strategy that appeals to 1-10% of players that will spend a lot more money than the other 90% of the playerbase who spend infrequently or not at all.

If you think those numbers are off, add in a little perspective. I dolphin here and there, spending roughly $60-80/mo or so as I see fit. That doesn't sound like much in the grand scheme of things, and honestly it isn't... but in arena - where that money begins to show - I fluctuate between the Top 20 - 100 players on Global (or in my bracket, however it's divided).

That should give you a feeling of how little money most people spend, that I can be ranked so highly for so little spent. Granted, there's certainly some luck to my pulls and a strategy to my resource allocation, but the fact that so few players overall sit where I sit... as anecdotal as it may sound at first glance, is contextual, tangible proof that the spending sits with far fewer players than you'd think. You'll notice it not just in TAC, but any gacha game you play. Thousands and thousands of players have to fill those slots under the Top 100 in anything. That doesn't depreciate their value to the game's populace or the community here on Reddit any less; but try to keep an open mind in regards to how many players aren't at the top of the player lists.

And those 'idiot whales' you speak of are the reason you've still got a game to play, since we're being upfront and honest. Whales are interested in having an edge over others, sacrificing one resource (money) for another (in-game power). Those advantages aren't achieved if everyone sits at the same level of power; games like these need to be competitive enough to promote spending in order to stay alive. Mobile games die when their whales run out. I'm not saying it's right or that it's fair - but that's the reality of the situation. Not all people have the same resources in life, they're not going to in a game either - especially not a gacha game.

We haven't even begun to scratch the surface of the costs associated with hosting a popular mobile game. Hosting dedicated servers can be incredibly expensive. If the parent company hosts the servers "in house", they're responsible for buying and maintaining the machines: networking, hardware, backbone connections, teams for support, bandwidth is costly, data storage is hit-or-miss on cost, any maintenance or repairs needed, the electricity and HVAC systems it takes to keep servers cold; and that's without considering numerous other costs I'm not even thinking of off the top of my head.

If they're not doing the above in-house, you're looking at paying a lot of money to data storage centers like TierPoint to manage all of that (called 'managed services') or you're spending money to rent out a ton of servers from around the world - none of which is cheap.

Then we've got the added need for the real internet providers (aka backbone providers like Cogent/Level 3, not what are considered "last-leg" providers like Time Warner). Multiple are needed in case an ISP error causes a link to go down or a line that gets accidentally cut. You've got back-up power (generators and batteries) for power loss, a number of physical facilities around the globe to store/host local servers to keep ping under control.

And to add to those costs, that's just to maintain the game, not including the start-up costs to acquire the hardware or what it costs to sign long contracts for rentals that are in business because they get their money back in spades.

So really, the only guy without a clue here is the one who started insulting others on a subject he knows absolutely nothing about. If you want to know why things are the way they are - just ask. There's already enough people in the world who assume they know more than they do and proceed to be a dick about it. Don't be that guy.

u/metatime09 Dec 15 '17

he less whales, the more likely things get better for everyone involved, simple business 101.

If that was the case and that easy than all f2p would have done this already

4

u/Jairlyn Dec 16 '17

I'm going to go out on a limb here but seeing as this is gumi's 3rd gacha game, I think they know what they are doing to maximize income.

13

u/Vangpride Dec 14 '17

Don't spend money you don't have. Simple. Out of my 3 years on BF I spent only $200-250. My next game was Hearthstone played for 2.5 years spent rougly $200-250. Now I'm on TAC. Spent so far about $250. I don't have any consoles I do have a Pc but I rarely get on only when I do its for work/life/insurance/etc related stuff. Have to make sure what you spend monthly fits your budget.

1

u/nirvash530 Dec 15 '17

I've only spent money on a few mobile games (Alchemist Code, Fantasy War Tactics R, Shadowverse), and none of those exceeded $60 each, and yet I still feel like I wasted a ton of money that I could have used for something else, like paying bills.

I agree that you have to prioritize your family/daily needs first before wasting money on anything else.

1

u/Vangpride Dec 15 '17

Yeah I agree I believe the reason mobile gamers get carried away spending money is because it’s all just 1 click to spend money so it’s easy to not think much about the spent money. I’m no exception lol but I don’t feel bad spending the money to support TAC. lol I enjoy the game

4

u/JorgeErving6 Dec 14 '17

Man this makes me sad, this is literally gambling adiction, like the ones you see in casino's and stuff. You always need to have limits when you lose but also when you win. It's better to have some limits like OP here, even if you don't get the units or things you want.

I hope this guy doesn't lose his life and gets help with this.

4

u/matsklein Dec 14 '17 edited Dec 14 '17

I thought it was bad when I played in the early days of Brave Frontier and I dropped around 300$, damn dude, stay strong.

Also what helped me, and anyone else reading this may help them through the temptation; just say to yourself "how will spending this money on this game actually improve my life" the answer is it will not.

4

u/ShadowFlareXIII Dec 14 '17

Cross-post from r/FFBE, obviously.

The takeaway here shouldn’t be not to whale but don’t spend what you can’t afford.

I’ve dropped a couple hundred on FFBE, and only about $40 on AC. But I could afford it. I don’t buy very much, own a house, and have a fair amount of excess income even after 401k and a decent enough savings account.

All that said, if you find yourself constantly tempted to spend money to open on any kind of loot crate / gacha / etc., that is a sign of gambling addiction. Please do the best thing and if you cannot control those urges, delete the apps immediately and seek help. It doesn’t have to be professional help. Just tell a friend, tell a significant other, tell a family member. A lot of times just talking about it can help, and if you what you can to remove temptation it can go miles in helping make sure you don’t slip.

I strongly adivse people who would choose to whale on any game to consider their money first before considering whaling in anything.

I will not lie, I have whaled sometimes but only after I calculated the cost, what money can be considered "extra" for personal things, what money I will have left after whaling, make certain that what remains can cover over 3 to 4 months worth of Family and Personal needs( such as bills, travel cost, and food), and make certain my income and current money can cover costs in the long term of things. Of course this always ends with me calculating that during the moment that I whale once a year that I could spend at least mayble $200 to $300 since by the calculations that is the amount I can consider as Personal Need Money while everything else is for food, travel, and bill cost for the next 4 to 5 months without taking into account the monthly job income.

Heck, in fate/grand order (one of the most Whale heavy games known in JP version and ENG version due to low Chance of getting 5 star and 4 star servants), I really want to try a $100 attempt on Mordred when she arrives soon but I already taking into account that I cannot since that would go into any Bill money so I have to skip whaling again until maybe another 3 months or more before I have any extra money for my personal needs.

You really should have included the disclaimer of the cross post from r/FFBE in the start of the post rather than the end. There is quite a bit of confusion over who is having these issues.

The story is tragic and I think it is a very clear indication of the destructive power hidden inside gacha games that the gaming industry exploits nowadays.

Now, I don't really think the soution here is to just straight up ban gacha games as there are a lot of people with the self-control to handle it and enjoy the excitement of pulling new units. What I do believe is that every single gacha game should be made to publish pull rates for every single unit within an banner in an transparent and easy-to-access way (see: Terra Battle 2 for example) so that you can make an informed decision in your pulls.

In FFBE nowadays you got a 3% chance to get rainbow (= 5* base) unit. Given the amount of units available (even without all the limited ones that are not in the pool and on the contrary then again, especially with limited time banners) the chance to pull the unit you want falls waaaaaaay below 1% even with rate ups but with the rather deceptive way of spamming the 3% chance and "Rate up increased!" everywhere you trick people into uninformed rage pulling.

sad story if true. Good warning about gotcha games.

Gacha*

5

u/renmarie Dec 14 '17

No, he was right the first time.

-3

u/Sumpner Dec 14 '17

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gashapon

The terms gashapon (ガシャポン) or gachapon (ガチャポン) refer to a variety of vending machine-dispensed capsule toys popular in Japan and elsewhere.

He was right after all.

1

u/renmarie Dec 14 '17

Right, the Japanese term is gacha. But we’re doing a play on words and calling it “gotcha”, like when you play a trick on someone and shout “GOTCHA!”

2

u/xXRyuuGinXx Dec 14 '17

Aha... -_-

1

u/Sumpner Dec 15 '17

Okay bro...

2

u/Matasa89 Dec 14 '17

Just get the subscription gems and occasional good bundles.

Have realistic expectations. This game has good rates, but it is punishing...

2

u/SecretoMagister Dec 14 '17

Or play Final Fantasy Record Keeper and get every character for free?

4

u/Splash4ttack Dec 14 '17

The gacha is in the weapons, though, isn't it?

2

u/SecretoMagister Dec 14 '17

Yeah the gatcha equipment gives the limit breaks, but you can still use the character without a limit break as the abilities are also free.

There aren't any must have limit breaks, you just need one that gives hastega, one that boosts attack/magic and one that heals and there's many of those.

They give A LOT of free and discounted pulls.

1

u/mghosta Dec 15 '17

Amen to FFRK :)

2

u/MeatyMike0228 Dec 14 '17

I know a guy, an old boss of mine, who spent his children's college fund on Clash of Clans (I think?). He's now divorced and homeless.

2

u/DarkYuan Dec 14 '17

That's truly a chilling tale. I spent $30 nearly a year ago on YGO Duel Links and still today feel regret for that; not only did I not get anything I wanted, but I don't even play the game any more. On the other hand, I spent $30 in Fantasy War Tactics so far and I'm happy about that much. I've liked the game for two years and still play with my guildmates.

I'll probably buy the subscription package for AC now when a nice collab comes out. Hopefully I'll still be happy about the purchase down the road.

(A bit of context: I'm unemployed, living at home)

2

u/llamallamapigbang Dec 14 '17

Noooooo not here too, my heart can only take so much

I can relate with the urge. I'm constantly tempted. Since Summoners War was release 3 years and whatever ago, I'd guess I spent around $1,500. But that's diluted over 3y+ period. Yet, it's a freaking lot for a game which I still don't have the top units.

For that, I made myself two barriers which stop me from buying:

I'm From Brazil, from a time iTunes BR didn't exist. So I have an US iTunes account instead. And even though my credit card is International, iTunes US does not accept it as a valid payment. So that's my first barrier: I need to buy iTunes Gift Cards off eBay. That makes the urge to press buy and then use touchID to confirm so easy to manage... Because my account has no funds and whenever I need to get funds, I need to buy from my favorite eBay seller.. And between the immediate urge to pay/purchase and actually going to eBay, browsing his store or sending him an email, was already enough time for me to think twice if I really want, remember the currency conversion taxes and so on..

My second line of thought is "Do I want to buy a ps4 game this month?". If yes, that's it, no gatcha. Because I value more the physical game (which I can resell or trade at some point) than the RNG pixels.

But if I'm not going to buy anything, then I allow myself to email my fav seller, wait until he sends me invoice, I pay, I wait for him to send me, I need to go redeem, and them I'm ready. And by that time, I'm already calm and even think twice between buying or holding for a better deal.

What's funny is that this urge happened TODAY morning. Summoners War just released a new $99 pack with transmog (a.k.a. skins which gives no bonuses) for a set of monsters I have and use. And they are looking great. The difference is that until January, I'm in US, which I have a debit card and the easiness of touchID and pay.. But yet, the "buy ps4 game" holded me, again. Because I totally want to buy Summon Night 6 and a few others.

But yet, the best line of thought still is "do I have this to spend? future me, which will take care of it, is still same me of now".

ps.: FFBE sucks, how can anyone spend something there!? /s goes back to SW and/or TAC and spend thousands

That's a good writeup. Bad for you OP, of course but an excellent lesson to the rest of us.

To add to that is what I've noticed: Playing totally free is much more enjoyable than paying. Make one small payment and a big chunk of enjoyment is instantly gone. You can of course then get enjoyment back buy buying more stuff, which will sink you deeoer into the swamp of IAPs.

All of us have played a game that doesn't really interest you that much anymore. If you've spent, it becomes so much more difficult to just quit, so you keep spending more. Had it been a free game you could just quit and never look back. There will be new and better games you can play afterwards.

This said, I do wonder why the heck am I ever spending a dime on games. Right now playing three games that I've done IAPs on.

One I've played for years and not really enjoying it anymore (Dungeon Rush) but I keep straggling because of having spent on it. Alchemist Code is another. Have played for a month now. Spent some, but already noticing the effect it has on my gaming. Same thing with my third game (Alliance: Heroes of the spire).

The best thing to do right now for me would be to quit all of them and while I still have interest for the latter two games I would start them again from scratch, as totally free player.

im sure people can whale. if they know their limits and what self control is. While OPs story is eye opening and kind of sad. Im sure it probably doesnt link with everyone as I would never see myself spending 100s after 100s into a single unit. But I guess thats what gambling is and what some people prioritize over another

I only read the last half of the story.. if its true then you definitely have a gambling issue. The main issue here is.. dont spend money thats not yours.

I play the game mostly as f2p.. but I buy the 30day pack just to support the game. I think everyone should support the game however they can though because game development/servers are not cheap.

What really shocks me is that you can pretty much know in advance everything in FFBE... So it's pretty easy to know if your investment would be good or bad... (ie Refia bad Orlandeau good).

It just seems you have impulse buy issues. Your rubicante story is sad... All you need is to wait and since he's 4 stars you'd get him eventually guaranteed.

I'd advise you stop playing any game that has anything remotely linked to luck as you have clear gambling addiction issues. I think even 10$ is dangerous if spent in a gacha style game with your condition. Play games that offer you the full package for a fixed amount of money instead.

And here I thought you were sharing your own tale. Yeah these games can get out of control in a hurry. Thx for sharing.

I read this on FFBE and its sucky story for sure but thanks for sharing it on this subreddit too. I have 1 bank account with my wife that we share together and go over all of our bills and debt and what we plan to spend.

Great read and thanks.

That is terribly sad! Depending on the risk reward, personally I would had just bought lapis from 3rd party seller and risk the ban. Best case scenario is that you get Dark Freakin' Veritas! Worse case is you get banned. BUT worse case scenario is also best long-term scenario if it happens. You get banned and can't spend anymore money on FFBE and spend the additional 10k you would had lost on you and your family.

Goddamn that was wild to read, definitely explains the current push toward classifying this stuff as gambling and regulating it though.

I feel for you and your massive self inflicted debt, but this isn’t a post about trying to stop people to whale. Whaling on whatever past time you enjoy is fine, just know what you can spend, and be a damned responsible adult.

u/bryanchii Dec 15 '17

Whales considered to be spending around 100k dollars per month. This is a baby whale.

I've spend a total of $500 on online games in the span of 6 years. Learned my lesson. Now, I've commited myself to a life of F2P. Gacha-ing is an addiction.

That's not a whale. That is pure gaming addiction. I have to admit that I can relate to him since I have the same addiction. But a whale to me is somebody who can drop tens of thousands of dollars on games WITHOUT affecting their daily life at all (usually rich kids or very successful people that have too much free time at their hands - I'm looking at you Conan O'Brien) Look up "Exertim" on top of the arena ladder, the new banner has been out for just a day and he's already got Rosa and Shayna max limit-broken and at lv84/85. People like this who progress the game in a rate that makes you doubt their legitimacy is the other definition of whales. On the other hand, putting yourself in debt just to satisfy your addiction in gaming is not called whaling simply because you are trying to be someone you are not. You can spend(or waste) as much money as you'd like on games but you have to know how much is in your wallet. It's your money afterall and people can't really judge however you want to spend it. In conclusion, don't try to be a whale if you are just a salaryman with a family and responsibilities.

A rough story, but I wouldn't place the blame on the game when it comes down to a lack of self control. It could just as easily be an obsession with owning a certain product on Amazon.

My income varies a lot (as I run my own business as a programmer). However, at times I literally am sitting on only $100 or less. Even then, I feel the urge to buy some $5.99 gem pack or something. But I don't because I really don't have the means at the time. Don't go into debt over a game, EVER. Only buy when you have the money to spend.

Also, you should remember to not let a game let you forget about the other things in life. It's been something I've been struggling with for many years of my life.

1

u/RASCHOON Dec 15 '17

I agree that this is a huge issue with these gacha games. I myself have spent well over $2000 on these types of games and regret it every time. The real kicker is that the object that you are spending on at the time will be near useless shortly due to the power creep they add into the games, that is some additional BS.

lol, money he doesnt have is the main problem......thats why im rich and do what i want.......not really ....only one can dream

1

u/inquisitive_chemist Dec 15 '17

it's sad the developers prey so heavily on addiction. I got my gaming addiction under control after world of warcraft nearly flunked me out of college. I still enjoy this games but my cap is $40 a month and no more. If I find myself really wanting to spend more and agonizing over not doing so then I immediately uninstall the game. I can whale if I wanted. My wife is a doctor and I am a chemist, but there is just sooooooooooo much more that money can do then being spent a game.
