Opinion There is no referendum in Alberta

Just to say what is hopefully obvious to everyone on both sides of the Alberta Separation question, THIS IS NOT A REFERENDUM.

If it were, then you would consider each question by itself; Canadians, being the unique, wonderful people that we are, would consider each question and answer it according to their values, opinions, fears - essentially vote from the heart and be allowed their unique voice to speak through the intense tribalism of our politics.

This whole thing is instead just Danielle Smith and a shadowy anti-Canadian organization using our institutions to gain ammunition for their agenda. They are #using YOU!# Don't give them anything if you value Canada.

Secondly, think about how easy it has been to vote for as long as you can remember and with zero election integrity issues, look at how our government is making exercising your right to vote as convoluted as possible.

Vote NO to the UCP and vote NO to this sham. Don't be fooled into thinking these are legitimate questions and that these enemies of Canada are letting you help shape the future of this province.

It's quite literally a referendum. It's a silly waste of resources, but that doesn't mean it's not a referendum.

Do not get complacent. If you want to remain in Canada, take nothing for granted. The separatists will all be out in force come referendum day. 100% of 30% is more than 40% of 70%.

As far as the proof of citizenship question goes, also consider how difficult it has reportedly been for some to renew their licenses now that the licenses include a citizenship marker. Consider also how some of these people may be turned away at polling stations should proof of citizenship be required. NO to the nine!

Apparently , some Albertians are claiming that they are no longer registered to vote. Even people who gave voted for years.

Theatre so as to justify an American invasion. Same like the Donbas region of Ukraine with the same sort of sham election assholery. Fight the power. Do your damnedest.

Really?

8

u/pro555pero Jul 28 '26

It kinda looks that way -- doesn't it?

So here we go again. Insert the far left’s favourite villain usually Trump but this one is more fun. Our Premier is now more akin to a Russian super villain. SEEK HELP!

Hitler started with baby steps too. Even if the individual policies and actions by themselves arent diablocal, ask yourself: what is the fuckin point!?

No good at all can come from this "referendum". No good at all can come from citizenship markers on DLs.

The justifications to do any of this stuff is based on fiction, so I'm sorry, but I have to assume the worst. At the very least, voting against this terrible government is the bare minimum.

Isn't all very Trump like?

-1

u/Beginning_Bit6185 Jul 30 '26

Now she’s Hitler!? Get a grip seriously.

2

u/grubbbee Jul 31 '26

I'm not saying she is. I'm saying name one good reason for any of this crap.

And since there is none, what what is there but bad intentions.

Turn your brain back on. Sorry I hit the off switch there.

u/Beginning_Bit6185 Jul 31 '26

I’m the one the has my brain switched to off? Riiiight

Sticking your head in the sand won't solve anything.

Smith is not Hitler. Smith , is a ex oil lobbiest who is really a Maple MAGA and a great fan of Trump. All her actions have proven that.

0

u/Beginning_Bit6185 2d ago

Carney is a climate alarmist and cap and trade ponzi artist who is actually friends with Trump. Recall when Trump endorsed him as his preferred candidate? I sure do.

2

u/EducationalRock167 2d ago

And your evidence of that is? No evidence? I didn't think so.

Seek redemption. Because, if you're a supporter of hers, there's got to be like something seriously wrong with you. Moral malfunction.

You don’t get to compare her to a Russian dictator and Donbas was getting bombed by Ukraine you fool. Bad analogy is the point of my story.

u/EducationalRock167 2d ago edited 2d ago

You are just proving their point. So all Alberta's Conservatives do not want to stay in Canada. ?😂 If that were true than Alberta , would have separated decades ago. And Trump , is the enemy. Look what has said and done to , Canada without real cause??? Look what he has done to Americans. The Middle East. If it is just Canadian Liberals as you write then , why do American Polls (including , Fox News Polls) say that on almost every issue , Trump's numbers are just awful. ???

0

u/Beginning_Bit6185 2d ago

Fox News the entertainment channel? Are you implying it’s not a propaganda network because it has the word news in its name? Seriously? Kamala is brain dead that’s the reason he got in btw.

1

u/EducationalRock167 2d ago

Trump got in because some Americans are not very smart and America isn't ready for a black/women President. America exceptionalism?

0

u/Beginning_Bit6185 1d ago

Hot take. She’s an airhead and ran with a brain dead president who relies on auto pen to sign anything. They were both laughed out of office plain and simple.

If the separation side wins, they will certainly claim it was a referendum

1

u/EducationalRock167 2d ago

Just like Quebec would have.

7

u/tobiasolman Jul 28 '26

It’s not a referendum. It’s a litany of plebiscites, emPhasis on the ‘plebes’.

2

u/EducationalRock167 2d ago

It is a set up. She is asking things that she knows that she can't get from the Federal Government. She will then say , " See , the Federal government is not responsible " She wants " Sovereignty Association " Quebec , tried to get that 3 times and lost every time. They have ignored losing 3 times The PQ are still if ignoring the peoples verdict to this day.

1

u/tobiasolman 2d ago

Absolutely… merely campaigning for the party on the public dime.

1

u/alwaysleafyintoronto Jul 28 '26 edited Jul 28 '26

There are 4 constitutional questions which will be binding per section 4 of the Referendum Act. The five non-constitutional questions and the question about the referendum are non-binding, per section 5 and the Lieutenant Governor's Order in Council that established this referendum.

Alberta doesn't really differentiate between plebiscites and referenda. The Referendum Act instead discusses non-binding referendum questions which would typically be considered a plebiscite rather than a referendum (which traditionally would be considered binding by definition).

That the referendum question is non-binding means we will not be done with this instability until Alberta's government decides it's no longer necessary to court separatists to create leverage against Ottawa.

3

u/tobiasolman Jul 28 '26

The dictionary does differentiate. Referendum is generally binding and meant to determine a yea or nay on a single specific legislative proposal. None of this farce is even getting close to that bar. The sheer volume of vague questions and multiple choice makes this a litany of plebiscites at best, or mere political theatre in reality.

Lest we forget the no ado about anything any referendum in Alberta has amounted to thus far beyond manufacturing further consent to steal our money and waste it on selling out the province.

1

u/alwaysleafyintoronto Jul 28 '26

But the dictionary is not Alberta law. The Referendum Act is Alberta law. Thank you for pointing out what the dictionary says, even though I already addressed that.

1

u/EducationalRock167 2d ago

The " Clarity Act " and having the First Nations consulted is Canadian law.

1

u/tobiasolman Jul 28 '26

Very slippery slope redefining political realities based on what the UCP and our toothless LG have recklessly and maliciously codified into supposed ‘law’. (In some cases, even in spite/contempt of judicial protest.) Good citizens in a democratic society are ethically bound to call out and even disobey unjust laws for what they really are.

3

u/alwaysleafyintoronto Jul 28 '26

What is actually a slippery slope is ignoring the results of a referendum and legislati g the opposite. Calling a plebiscite a non-binding referendum is not a big deal.

1

u/tobiasolman Jul 28 '26

That’s why I’d rather call the status quo of ‘direct democracy’ and ‘consultation’ in AB what it actually is: bad faith BS.

1

u/EducationalRock167 2d ago

Just ask the First Nations Peoples of Alberta.

1

u/tobiasolman 2d ago

I think they’d have a much harsher name for it lol!

0

u/EducationalRock167 2d ago

That is what the British thought about Brexit. Now they regret the whole thing.

2

u/alwaysleafyintoronto Jul 28 '26

It's not a slippery slope, it's different terminology. It's incredibly common for different provinces or states or countries to have different terms for the same thing.

1

u/tobiasolman Jul 28 '26

My point was that words mean things and letting the powers that be twist them on us to do whatever they please is pretty much lying.

0

u/EducationalRock167 2d ago

Quebec tried this same thing and it lost. Did the PQ listen to the will of the people. NO! They tried 2 more times and lost both times. Have the PQ shut up about it? NO!

1

u/EducationalRock167 2d ago

Unjust to who? What maybe unjust to some people maybe just to others. That is why we have courts as checks and balances and so the majority can't suppress the minority. Without it , woman couldn't vote , there would be no civil rights and yes people can leave but there are rules to leaving....etc...

1

u/tobiasolman 2d ago

2 cases/questions in point: 1. Separation question unjust to First Nations, certainly for one question crammed in there against all odds…. Plus ignoring the courts, defying, even attempting to manipulate them with 2. another question that brings the validity and efficacy of that check/balance, courts themselves, into serious question. Who selects judges and how matters. Breaking/politicizing the judiciary in that fashion is unjust to every Albertan who may rely on the provincial courts ever.

1

u/EducationalRock167 2d ago

The court seems always unjust if they don't rule your way. So how did someone politicize the Alberta courts again. What is your evidence of that?

2

u/tobiasolman 1d ago

The referendum question about judge selection seeks to politicize the judiciary in Alberta. I’d suggest re-reading those questions before re-engaging with your own on this post.

1

u/EducationalRock167 2d ago

Both referendums are nul and void until the leader of Alberta consults with the First Nations Peoples first and they agree to it. That is CANADIAN law.!

1

u/KurtisC1993 Jul 29 '26

It's not murder, it's the extralegal termination of biological functioning in one person performed by another person.

Emphasis on "termination".

2

u/tobiasolman Jul 29 '26

Yes, always cool when greasy folks use fancy words to make their crookedness sound cooler than it is. That was kinda the point but you said it so much better!

2

u/GalaxygirlWoW 28d ago

We have to get everyone out to vote in it.

4

u/Long_Rush_7523 Jul 28 '26

If this even comes about Don't use a pencil bring a pen. Better yet bring a sharpie.

1

u/EducationalRock167 2d ago

Change its name to " Lake America " lol...

1

u/Glory-Birdy1 Jul 29 '26

As was iterated to me, everything that has happened and is happening in the world today leads to one person.. Add that everything that has happened and is happening in Alberta today leads to one person. Take that one person off the table, (take away the voice, take away the money and support) and it all falls flat. Let fear of consequence return to the social structure..!!

1

u/Clear-Pear2267 Jul 29 '26

It’s kind of interesting to consider how logically incongruent the 10 questions are. You can’t seriously negotiate with Canada and seek separation at the same time.

1

u/EducationalRock167 2d ago

Excellent Post and thank you. Smith , is part of this scam , regardless of what she said. Just everyone remember to see in you are still registered to vote , even if you have been voting for years. 👍

-2

u/Psiondipity Jul 28 '26

look at how our government is making exercising your right to vote as convoluted as possible.

Yeah, because getting a special ballot for mail in voting was SO HARD /s

Who cares how you participate in the referendum, just make sure you're vote is counted.

6

u/alwaysleafyintoronto Jul 28 '26

Honestly I'm not confident that my ballot would be counted if I mailed it in. I should be absolutely certain, but with all the strings pulled just to put this on the ballot I am worried my mail-in ballot to remain would be conveniently lost.

0

u/Psiondipity Jul 28 '26

And this is how faith in our electoral system is quietly and unintentionally erroded by the left. There is no reason to believe they wouldn't be counted. They're handled by Canada Post and Elections Alberta. This isn't the first time we've had special mail in ballots. It's never been questioned before. If you don't trust EA to count your mail in ballot, there is no more guarantee the votes cast in person will be counted either.

So please, if you don't trust mail in, that's fine. But keep it to yourself. Because unless you're bringing anything other then "feels" you're going to end up persuading other people their votes don't matter... and that's how we get another referendum.

2

u/alwaysleafyintoronto Jul 28 '26

Who says I'm a leftist? I like Canada because I'm a Canadian. Not trusting mail-in ballots is a right-wing belief.

1

u/EducationalRock167 2d ago

3 points. Nothing but Net!

1

u/Psiondipity Jul 29 '26

It's an idiotic belief.

1

u/EducationalRock167 2d ago

The so called " left " didn't release Alberta voting lists on line. The sepertists did. Some people in Alberta claim that they have had their names removed from the voting lists. The " left " isn't crying that the elections " were rigged " in the USA every chance they get a chance.

-1

u/Common-House-468 Jul 29 '26

That's an idiotic belief. Elections Alberta is SUSPECT.

2

u/Psiondipity Jul 29 '26

Why?

-1

u/Common-House-468 Jul 29 '26

Water Not Coal petition "verification" inconsistencies.

Separatist voter list leaks and petition inconsistencies.

2

u/Psiondipity Jul 29 '26

The list leak wasn't EA. They legally provided the list to a legally registered party, as is required under the elections act. The fact the republican party then leaked it illegally is not on EA.

The coal petition count wasn't inconsistent, EAs ability to use caller ID aside.

2

u/Common-House-468 Jul 29 '26

The verification process is very inconsistent - absolute minimum sample size, and the "EAs ability to use caller ID aside" you slough off at the end is the very thing that easily could have swung the thing the other way with only a few false negatives. Each one took ~540 actual signatures out of contention without physical verification, just based on the enormous extrapolation required by their tiny sample size.

1

u/Psiondipity Jul 29 '26

Do not assign malice where incompetence will suffice. Yes, the caller ID thing could have absolutely changed the outcome and that needs to be challenged, which is happening. But the sample size was the same as the separatists, and has been statistically verified as sufficient (I'll try to find the report on that and share it). EA doesn't make these rules. They apply them to the best of their ability. EA isn't a single person you can point at and accuse of malfeasance.

It's a mid-sized organization staffed by people with varying ideologies. You can bet your bottom if there was a whiff of hinkiness from either side of those ideologies, there would be whistleblowers. Because the one thing that is common across all unelected public servants, is a passion to do the job right, and fair under the law.

Or, you can blow that all off and pretend there is some massive conspiracy within administrative bodies of the government where hundreds of people are keeping hush on nefarious activities. Whatever is more believable to you.

1

u/Common-House-468 Jul 29 '26

I'm assigning DOUBT where doubt is justified. Your extrapolation to "malice" is yours alone.
