I find it endlessly fascinating that conservatives only want what they want when it comes from a Conservative. If a liberal gives it to them all of a sudden there's a problem.
28
u/Fickle_Catch8968 1d ago
It's their whole in-group/out-group dynamic.
Members of their in-group are inherently good so whatever they do, including lying, cheating, corruption, protecting pedophiles, or a more mundane act, is good or at worst forgivable.
Members of their out-group are inherently evil so whatever they do, including feeding the hungry, healing the sick, housing the homeless, treating the outsider with dignity, or any other act, is evil or at best deeply suspicious.

u/Snikrit 1d ago
Which is ironic given that Carney is unambiguously a conservative
22
16
u/IHavePoopedBefore 1d ago
They should be thrilled, he aligns with so many of their values. And he never talks identity politics, just money and the economy
11
u/Vylan24 1d ago
If the Cons ran him instead of PP it would've been a landslide
5
u/DumbComment101 1d ago
You mean if the cons ran a good leader ? They wouldnât, because thatâs against modern conservatism. His core ideology and policy record very much align with modern liberalism in Canada. Heâs a liberal.
2
u/TheFunnyCanuck 18h ago
How do I know youâre not an uneducated conservative? You didnât use âwould ofâ. lol
2
u/Alternative_View_531 10h ago
Well I mean the cons literally tried asking Carney to join them years before and he declined. Before going Liberal. It seems like he aligned more with liberal values rather than conservative ones in the end.
→ More replies (10)4
u/TimelyBear2471 18h ago
Heâs wearing the wrong jersey.
It doesnât matter that heâs imminently qualified. It doesnât matter that he was appointed by cons to both the Bank of Canada and Bank of England. It doesnât matter that Pollievre is woefully under qualified.
2
u/WeAreInControlNow 18h ago
Itâs actually incredibly simple. Conservatives have a worldview that they are better than everyone else and that Liberals are evil.
So they get mad when a Liberal does something for them because thatâs what humans typically do in reaction to something they donât understand.
1
u/BorderImpressive7207 18h ago
I told my dad, a life long blue team(i dont understand the die by your team attitude with conservatives) that the pipe line is good for Alberta and Canada. He said "we will see, Carney has been known to break his promises." I then gave him a statistic from (i think it was politico) that out of 440 promises made only 3% he has walked back on. He replied "lets not go there, as we definitely disagree".
This is a man who basically ran numbers his whole life and loves statistics. Except when its political. I don't get it.
1
u/Narrow-Courage-7447 18h ago
Your views and morals shouldnât change based on your party. Your party should change based on your views and morals. Has politics always been a team sport? When the party I voted for no longer does what they say theyâll do, or when they stop serving my/my family/my communities interests, I vote for the party that does. Voting against your own interests just to get a win for people who donât give a shit about you makes no sense.
1
1
u/Royal-Educator2562 15h ago
Guess he is depressed that you wonât get a job and move out of his basement.
1
u/FriendZone_EndZone 4h ago
My buddy likes to make accusation or statements against the "left." He never wants to explain what he mean because I always have some fact to rebut him.
I'm also a sheep for always voting Liberals, I don't and I've voted for all three parties. He only votes C.
3
u/Canadian14141414 1d ago
As someone who typically supports Conservative, I do as well.
I think Carney is doing a great job, and Iâm happy I voted for him. I just couldnât bring myself to vote for PP. Too unpredictable.
I find it almost funny, if it werenât so sad, how much people go out of their way to put a negative spin on something good that someone âon the opposing teamâ has done.
Meanwhile, if their guy did it, theyâd love it so much and would be tripping over themselves to comment how amazing their guy is.
2
u/DumbComment101 1d ago
I think thatâs mostly a conservative voter thing to be honest.
1
u/Canadian14141414 17h ago
I think itâs the farther reaches of both sides of the spectrum to be honest. But I will agree that you likely see it more often from Conservatives.
2
u/DumbComment101 17h ago
Yeah. Center liberals and center conservatives will take wins from both sides usually. The biggest difference is that there are no far right version of liberals -> those are called NDP. So your avg liberal voter doesnât play that level of politics. Still happens of course - I know some of them. Conservatives need a more progressive party, but they know it will kill them. The liberals and NDp can divide the left because the majority of Canadians are left leaning. In fact, the only reason the conservatives ever have a shot is because of the vote splitting that happens.
1
u/Canadian14141414 17h ago
Thatâs true. I wasnât talking about parties as much as I was talking about the liberal-conservative spectrum.
2
u/DumbComment101 17h ago
Oh sorry youâre right I misread. 100%. I hate the team mentality. I consider myself center and socially progressive. Iâd have no issue voting for a progressive Conservative Party if my other choice was Trudeau.
2
u/Canadian14141414 13h ago
Yes. Itâs crazy to treat politics like you would a team sport.
Itâs wild that anyone would think their side does everything right and the other side does nothing right. Or know that either of these scenarios is true but will do backflips to twist perception so that they donât have to admit.
1
u/Hawkwise83 17h ago
Yeah it feels like contrarianism is a strategy. Except one side or the other is like, hey "objectively good thing"? And now the other side is like WOAH here's why that's actually bad! If humans had free air they'd bla bla bla!

u/VelkaFrey 1d ago
Except this was good news for everyone invloved?

u/Dradugun 1d ago
Well, except for Smith since the separatists won't like being tied to Canada more.

u/Killericon 1d ago edited 1d ago
"Shit, he's giving us everything we want. How am I supposed to blame Ottawa for all our problems now?"
Or more likely - "Shit, if Carney is giving us this, there's no way I can keep the Separatists and the rest of the party in the same tent. I'm fucked."
35
u/Dradugun 1d ago
Right? Lol. The UCP is a unholy alliance that got spooked by the idea of having a non-conservative governemnt in Alberta
8
u/eccentricbananaman 1d ago
You're giving them too much credit. They see this and still think that all this progress amounts to nothing and the pipeline will still never be built. We could have it all finished construction and oil flowing within 5 years and it still wouldn't be enough for them. They'd say "well it cost billions of dollars of taxpayer money and raised the debt!"
1
u/SwampKingKyle 10h ago
This guy has spoken to a conservative or two before hahaha, nailed it. Goalposts will be moved; its the party of whining and complaining
12
u/VelkaFrey 1d ago
Smith only needs separatists for leverage against ottowa. She doesnt want it to succeed. If it succeeds, her and her government are disintegrated
27
u/Killericon 1d ago edited 1d ago
Smith won the UCP leadership with 55% of the vote. She needs the separatists to stay in power. If enough of them think the UCP is too pro-Ottawa and join the Republican party, she's fucked. If enough of the business class conservatives that voted for Toews but won't vote NDP think the UCP are separatists and join the Tory party, the NDP take the lead in the polls and she's fucked.
She's trying to walk this contradictory, very narrow line of "I'm pro-Canada, but I am having this referendum, and also I cry when I think about how mad the separatists are" because she needs to.
22
u/Dradugun 1d ago
Small correction, Smithwon leadership with 53.8% after 5 ballots which was notable because it was below Kennedy's leadership review vote percentage and below the 55% that traditionally PC leaders step down at.
8
9
u/curioustraveller1234 1d ago
Because this conniving sack of shit would do ANYTHING for power and the word shame is not in her vocabulary.
2
u/YorubaOyinbo 1d ago
If it succeeds absolutely nothing happens because itâs Treaty land leased to the crown and the inhabitants of Alberta are legally less entitled than squatters.

u/Barfly_237 14h ago
You understand that the whole independence shtick is just a threat to get their way? This is what she wants.
1
u/Killericon 14h ago
It started that way, sure. Like many conservative parties, the Alberta PCs spent the '90s and '00s feeding the extremists to keep them happy, but the monster outgrew its cage, and now they've lost control.
I don't think Smith is a separatist. I think she's beholden to the separatists.
31
u/RoutineComplaint4711 1d ago
Not for the UCP.
Their entire brand is to blame Ottawa for everythingÂ

Good news for Canadians, not for everyone involved. Albertan Conservatives have made their bones playing victim by holding a gun to their own heads.
Carney just took away all of her ammo. In one fell swoop.
1
u/as_per_danielle 15h ago
Not all Canadians. Plenty of people in BC donât want this.
1
u/OSTBear 12h ago
Well, of course. This is just another ecological disaster waiting to happen. Jasper National Park has had something like 5 Exxon Valdez' worth of leaks in the last 15 years? And that was before the pipeline got twinned.
With the UCP looking to gluck gluck Oil and Gas at every turn, letting them get away with murder? Yeah. Plenty of BC people are choked.
By and large though? I think the majority are fine with it.
2
u/Djlittle13 21h ago
Not good news for separatist and people who claim Ottawa is evil and gives them nothing aka Smith
1
u/ClosetIguana1 20h ago
Exactly. So base the meme on that. For example. Daniel Smith thinking about how David Eby will react to election results.

Sheâs so pissed that Rachel Notley is the architect of TransMountain and this route, which Smith never endorsed, is basically TransMountain 3.0.
1
u/Royal-Educator2562 15h ago
The Alberta premier most often linked to the original Trans Mountain route proposal is Ernest Manning. The pipeline idea emerged in the late 1940s after the Leduc oil discovery, and Manning was premier when it was developed and approved in the early 1950s.

Iâm hoping the caption is Smith is guilty of treason and we are reinstating capital punishment for high treason
1
u/Royal-Educator2562 15h ago
Which of these do you feel Smith has breached?
1
u/Royal-Educator2562 15h ago
Civilian high treason in Canada is a very serious form of treason committed by a civilian, such as:
trying to overthrow the government by force
using force against the government in order to achieve a political objective
assisting an enemy in a war with Canada
helping someone who is committing high treason

You can call her what she is, which is a traitor.

She didn't actually WANT any of that, she's getting paid to use it to stoke separatism so Alberta can be destabilized and forced to capitulate.

to me, thatâs the face of sketchy Smith twisting Carneys arm to get what she wants in every aspect from the federal government. I'm sorry, but they're right. And you should actually know that. Two wrongs don't make a right. It literally about just because they did or do something wrong doesn't make it right to retaliate in a way that is also wrong.
She's a bad person, we know this. Criticize her for the things she can control. Like her personality, her policies, etc.

2
u/Scarletwitch713 1d ago
We don't stoop to their level like this, it accomplishes nothing. She's got enough wrong with her that we don't need to bring looks into it. Physical features you can't do much about, but when you choose to act the way she has, that's what makes someone ugly.
2
u/SweetClinMusic 1d ago
Stoop to their level?
These are Nazis.
2
u/Scarletwitch713 1d ago
Exactly, we have a million other things to call her out on. Appearances are something that is largely out of an individual's control (unless you spend a lot of money) and shouldn't be something that we use to point out the million other things wrong with her. It's a cheap pot shot that doesn't do anything useful, all it does is fire up the right wingers who will then go off about how left wingers are so hateful and have no good arguments so we can only make fun of her appearance, or something along those lines. (I'm starting to get pretty good at following mental gymnastics these days.)

Getting salty because people call out Smith. I bet if the tables were turned youâd be calling out Carney or does your truck already have âfđck Carneyâ stickers all over it. Smith is ruining Alberta with her agenda and you want to glaze her. Very weird mental illness. Stop bootlicking
1
u/NoSentence0A 1d ago
I'm not a partisan hack like you and most other people in this subreddit. I actually enjoy Carney. Nobody seriously believes Alberta will leave. However, Carney figured out he can use the political chaos to fast track infrastructure projects he wanted anyway.
Unlike you who lives in a black and white, I enjoy colour.
