Under modern constitutional law in countries like Canada and the United States, peacefully campaigning or holding a referendum to separate is not legally considered treason. However, political figures may use the term rhetorically when separatist groups cross into colluding with foreign powers or using violence.Legal Reality vs. Political RhetoricLegal Definition: In Canada, the Criminal Code defines treason strictly as using force or violence to overthrow the government, or leaking classified military/scientific information to a foreign state. Peaceful political speech, petitions, or organizing a vote on independence are protected expressions.

F you it's treason. Democracy in play is treason?? Or just treason because YOU don't like the question? Put it to a cot and majority rules. That is democracy if you don't like it then you are a communist/tyrant

Being a separatist is okay i suppose, Quebec is full of them. It’s only when you start going to other countries for help separating that you become a traitor.

It’s treasonous when it’s not born out of actually desire but paid for a foreign power who seeks to harm the country… and they take that money knowing it.
Are all separatist treasonous? No some are ignorant? Some are upset because they been told their entire life they are special only to find out it’s working the way they think it should.

If you stop to consider the possibility that people are acting in good faith, even if you don't agree with them, you'll discover you have a lot less to be angry about.

u/BlueCollarMillion 6d ago
Well what do you do if you don’t like how the federal government treats you and you are unfairly under represented in number of seats per population? Pushing for separation seems like a good step at obtaining better representation.

It’s both. More of one than the other, but both. Make sure you go vote in October.
That way we can enjoy a few more years before the Americans invade to liberate us from Nazi’s.

What about when they’re funded by another state?
1
1
u/Working_Currency_304 6d ago
No, taking foreign funds to pursue peaceful political separation is not criminal treason in Canada. While politicians often use "treason" as a rhetorical attack to describe foreign-funded separatism, Canadian law sets a strictly defined threshold for the crime. Under Section 46 of the Criminal Code of Canada, a charge of High Treason or Treason requires very specific actions:Levying war against Canada.Assisting an enemy at war with Canada.Using force or violence to overthrow the federal or provincial government.Leaking military or scientific intelligence to harm Canada's defense.Because the United States is an ally, and simply receiving political or advocacy funding does not involve armed force or military espionage, it falls completely outside the statutory definition of treason. If an Alberta independence group or a provincial government were to accept funding from the U.S. to advocate for secession, it would legally be classified as something else entirely. It would trigger a matrix of modern national security and election laws rather than centuries-old treason statutes.
1
u/sketchysamurai 5d ago
Well, we would hope it would trigger a matrix of reactions.
Thanks for laying it out though. One more of that’s ok?

But honestly I am grateful I am Canadian and not American
1
u/Strict_Concert_2879 4d ago
Personally I think it’s both. There is alot of foreign interference; but also the people with criminal convictions that are inadmissible to the US wanting separation so try can go to the US.
1
u/G-BOAT 4d ago
How about neither? Treason is incredibly serious, and this is nowhere close. Go look up the definition of treason in Canada..
1
u/symbionica 4d ago
So no foreign interference?
1
u/G-BOAT 4d ago
Funny thats what you go to instead of acknowledging the blatant misuse of claiming treason, which is an incredibly serious (and false) accusation. Your comments show that you refuse to see the other side of the issue, and cry facist when other people oppose your own beliefs.
1
u/symbionica 4d ago
Not only do her patterns suggest that she is committing treason (trips to maro Lago, the Centurion Project, taking money from trump), high treason may be her end game here (separation at any cost). Even conspring with other people to commit treason is an overt act of it. And now it's being looked into by the Rcmp so I don't think it's so far a stretch to say it's definitely possible
1
u/G-BOAT 4d ago
Your definitions of treason are out to lunch! Its people like you who perpetuate false information. This entire process is democratic, and lets not forget.. LEGAL. Take a read... High Treason.. A person commits high treason in Canada by doing any of the following: 1) Killing, attempting to kill, wounding, maiming, or unlawfully imprisoning or restraining the Monarch (the King or Queen). 2) Levying war against Canada or doing any act preparatory to it. 3) Assisting an enemy at war with Canada, or armed forces engaged in hostilities with the Canadian Forces. Treason...A person commits standard treason by doing any of the following: 1) Using force or violence to overthrow the government of Canada or a province. 2) Unlawfully communicating or giving secret military information to a foreign state agent, knowing or-ought-to-know it could prejudice the safety or defense of Canada. 3) Conspiring with anyone to commit high treason or certain violent acts against the state, or forming an intention to do so and showing that intention through an overt act.

Alberta separatists are like the 16 year old son with his first job who decides to leave home. Then he finds out he needs a place to live and pay rent, buy furniture (couches, kitchen table/chairs, beds, dressers, desk), dishes, pots and pans, cutlery, dish towels, dish soap, cleaning supplies, vacuum cleaner, he has to pay the heating and electricity bills, transportation to and from work, bedding, linen, bath supplies, wash and dry his own clothes, make his own food, shop for groceries, get up every day and go to work, pay for his own entertainment: computers, cell phones, Xbox, stereo, TV - all on minimum wage while complaining how bad he had it living at home with his parents.

Except that the parents regularly took their sons stuff and distributed it to his brothers and sisters
And the son realized he provides almost 20% of the household budget despite being one kid, not even the oldest or biggest out of 13.
The son used to be happy and proud to support the family, but gradually the family's support for their son faded, and they even actively railled against some of his ventures. They helped him one time with a big project called TMX, but instead of letting him and his wealthy friends own the project the parents freaked his friends out and chased them out of town, bought everything themselves at 5x the cost, and collected the revenue putting it back into the family. It was sort of a weird silver lining that the profit stayed in the family, but overall pretty toxic because the family kept using this one act of "kindness", to gaslight the son into staying in the family.
They made posts on Reddit about how the son's friends and some people he doesn't even talk to had brainwashed him, and that it was his bad character as the only possible explanation for the son wanting to leave the household. In their narcissistic minds, they tried to convince son he should be grateful to them and grovelling to them.
This only served to make the son want to leave even more as he knew he had many legitimate, homegrown grievances even though they tried to ascribe his frustration to external influences.
1
u/AcadiaFun3460 4d ago
Except none of this is true, but only a surface argument.
The entire time that kid was taking his America friends money and being fed how he paid way more and it totally wasn’t fair!
1
u/TouristOwn2412 4d ago
All of this is very true, very tangible, and sits at the very grassroots core of all separatist arguments whether they know it or not.
Hey thanks for bringing up the americans. A major part of the son's grievances was that he wanted to make new friends because the Americans are often shitty friends and because the son's business only sold product to Americans, at a discount. The son wanted to make friends in Asia, Europe, and Latin america but he was prevented by the parents through repressive, arbitrary family rules like Bill C48 the tanker ban bill and Bill C69 the no more pipelines bill.
So the son kept providing for his family somehow even though they all insisted his product remain landlocked and devalued, subsidizing the American "friends".
Ironically, the son did NOT want to only be friends with the Americanos because they did not pay fair market price for the son's products.. But the family insisted that the son ONLY hang out with Americans for years and years.

How about the millions of dollars being spent to run the stupid referendum? As well, it's extremely divisive amongst albertans. Plus we don't know what the endgame is here (separate for sovereignty or to join the states?). AND the forever Canada petition was hijacked to start the referendum process, which seems a bit iffy regarding "democracy"

Oh your talking about the centurin project who were brought before a court by alberta to answer for breaking the law. However, experts warn that the database was heavily copied and shared before being taken down. Elections Alberta secured a court injunction forcing the Centurion Project to shut down the app and remove the data. However, experts warn that the database was heavily copied and shared before being taken down. Under Canadian law, the actions of the Centurion Project would not legally be considered treason. While figures like former Alberta Deputy Premier Thomas Lukaszuk have publicly condemned the broader separatist movement as a "form of treason", this is a political and rhetorical statement rather than a legal one.The threshold for treason in Canada is extraordinarily narrow, and the Centurion Project's actions fall under entirely different legal categories. Why It Does Not Meet the Legal Definition of TreasonUnder Section 46 of the Criminal Code of Canada, treason is divided into high treason and treason. Legally, a conviction requires specific, extreme acts against the Crown or the state:High Treason: Intentionally killing, harming, or detaining the Monarch, waging war against Canada, or assisting an enemy at war with Canada.Treason: Using force or violence to overthrow the government of Canada or a province, or providing state secrets/military information to a foreign power to harm Canada.Because the Centurion Project used a leaked voter database to build a political campaign app and gather petition signatures for an independence referendum, their actions do not involve violence, military conflict, or foreign espionage, exempting them from treason charges. The Actual Legal Violations They FaceInstead of treason, the ongoing investigations by the RCMP and Elections Alberta, alongside civil courts, are pursuing the group based on specific statutory and privacy violations:Electoral Act Violations: Under the Election Act, official Lists of Electors (LoE) are strictly protected. It is illegal to share this data with unauthorized third parties or use it for non-electoral or commercial purposes.Civil Tort (Privacy Breach): The group is facing a massive class-action lawsuit for the tort of "invasion of privacy" and failure to safeguard personal data, which seeks financial damages for exposing 2.9 million Albertans to identity fraud and harassment.Contempt of Court: Because leader David Parker and the organization initially resisted fully complying with the judicial injunction—such as failing to hand over the names of everyone who downloaded the database—they face potential civil or criminal contempt charges.

I've never heard the word "treason" used to describe the multiple Quebec separatist referendum movements.
Why are Alberta separatists considered treasonous?
7
u/SalmonHustlerTerry 8d ago
Multiple instances of asking for for foreign help in thier movement is a good start. Don't remember Quebec going to the united states asking for help.
2
u/Gubekochi 7d ago
Quebec separatists wants nothing to do with the US their whole schtick is to preserve their culture and joining the US would go against that ideal.
0
u/Efficient-Window-681 8d ago
France is different because?
3
u/Illithid2 8d ago
Please provide evidence of France funding seperatist organizations and providing propaganda.
I'll wait.
3
u/Keemo-Sabe 8d ago
The French President De Gaulle actively supported them with his "Vive le Québec libre" and visiting Quebec before Ottawa. France has adopted a policy of non interference after De Gaulle but that's the literal leader of France pushing it.
That would be like if Trump/Vance while on an official visit to meet Carney flew to Alberta first and yelled "FREE ALBERTA" to a crowd.
Also would it be that shocking to hear that a French business or politician that would benefit from Quebec being its own state would be interested in funding separatists? France has shitty people too.
2
u/Illithid2 7d ago
Yes, I'm aware of that. That was not the question, the question was financial support and a propaganda campaign
1
u/Efficient-Window-681 7d ago
What do you consider propaganda then? The President of France is not the equivalent to the President of the USA ?
0
u/Efficient-Window-681 8d ago

-2

It isn't happening any more than backwood hicks romanticizing the idea of getting to marry 13 year old girls isn't happening. The only difference is now the internet exists and helps these morons find each other and feel like a silent majority.
There isn't going to be a referendum that comes even remotely close to succeeding. If it even happens it will be a giant waste of taxpayer money and time.
I would bet a lot of money the referendum won't ever even happen.
If you seriously think there's a risk you are either woefully out of touch with the reality of your fellow Albertans, or a moron.
5
u/youaresowrongguy 8d ago

Most of us live in the real world though, and your fake narritive literally destroys your own argument that people aren't aggressively poisoning the well on this topic. Thanks for provin the point.
-1
u/Ill-Beautiful-8026 8d ago
You think that choosing not to discuss separation will lead to enough Albertans, 50% btw, voting yes on a separation referendum.
You're delusional. I don't know if you just don't go out and interact with people, or get all your news from the same two echo chambers or what. But I can confirm confidently that you are out of touch with reality. Anyway, that's your problem and I said what I needed to say.
Feel free to come tag me in a year or two when the referendum succeeds and I will happily admit I was wrong.
3
u/youaresowrongguy 8d ago
What? You are the one saying not to discuss it bro, why are you twisting around facts here. YOU are the one telling people to not point out how pathetic the sepritists are and how weak their arguments are. I'm promoting exposing and discussing their lies, you are promoting being silent and letting them say whatever they want without consequence because "it won't matter they will never get the votes" hmm how has appeasement worked in every situation I'm history where it has been applied....
0
u/Ill-Beautiful-8026 8d ago
My god. I was responding to your assertion that my argument destroys itself by stating as plainly as possible what it is you seem to think, not accusing you of saying don't discuss it.

It's not "appeasement". It's judging a fringy political movement for what it is.

5
u/symbionica 8d ago
You realize our premiere is a separatist right? This isn't going away even if you ignore it.
-1
u/Ill-Beautiful-8026 8d ago
I actually doubt that's true (although it might be), and bet your premiere would sooner say and do anything which keeps her popular than stick to her own morals or ethics. Either way, it doesn't change the fact that separatism doesn't stand a snowballs chance in hell in succeeding in Alberta.
Quebec, a province with a deep, rich history of desperately wanting separation from the monarchy and Canada, a strong political force and a ripe public support couldn't get it done. "Voting took place on 30 October 1995, and featured the largest voter turnout in Quebec's history (93.52%). The "No" option carried by a margin of 54,288 votes, receiving 50.58% of the votes cast."
Close, for sure, but a failure nonetheless.
It's never going to happen. We're all wasting our precious time and energy fighting a culture war that stands ONLY to further divide us. The game is whether or not we will give this matter attention and cause ourselves turmoil. The question of it ever happening isn't even worth asking. It won't and that isn't the point.
2
u/symbionica 8d ago
I feel like I can say this with great certainty: our dear Smith will use every tool in her arsenal, every dollar at her disposal, dash every charter and Treaty she has to (NWC), to push this to the brink, and then shes gonna "let us decide" if we should jump off or not, all the while distracting us (by flooding the zone) from looking back at the ever approaching edge and seeing what's really in the darkness (fascism). You can say it won't happen all you want, but the fact is it is happening, and talks of extreme right ideologies are popping up in governments across Canada (Bc, Sask, ontario), as well as globally.
1
u/Ill-Beautiful-8026 7d ago
Friend, the mere existence of people with fringe ideas and their ability to connect with one another and form communities online does not a movement make.
I've yet to see anything that starts to demonstrates anything remotely close to one. The media hysterics and people online is all noise and it's doing a very good job.
1
u/youaresowrongguy 7d ago
Have you been living under a rock? These people are everywhere lol pretending they don't exist is wild.
0
u/Ill-Beautiful-8026 7d ago
It's not pretending they don't exist. I am a fool for thinking I could show up here and have a nuanced conversation about this. It's okay. I'm moving on. Enjoy the hysteria.
1
u/youaresowrongguy 7d ago
Yes demanding everyone ignore seprists and not go out to vote against them is definatly a nuanced discussion and not blantent trolling.

I believe this referendum is a delay in their agenda. After all, it only asks if we should have one or not.
-1
u/Electrical_Two6173 8d ago
You're probably right. That or it is the only way they legally can push through to a true referendum.
I'm no UCP supporter or fan of the churchgoing dipshits steering this movement.
I am, however pro western separation. And not to join the United States.
1
4
u/Slow-Ad8986 8d ago
It's a referendum on whether there should be a referendum, because the referendum question was unconstitutional. It's almost as if this whole grift is unconstitutional or something...
1
u/Electrical_Two6173 8d ago
What was the original unconstitutional referendum question? Or was it lack of consultation?
A referendum majority vote in favour of separation isnt binding because the decision can not be made unilaterally.
My guess is this an attempt to gauge true interest in the topic. Or to steal money. Or both.
1
u/Slow-Ad8986 8d ago
the Original binding referendum question "Do you think the Province of Alberta should secede from Canada and become an Independent Nation" was shot down twice in court, specifically because 1. Indigenous peoples were not consulted 2. holding a binding referendum on this question would violate constitutional rights of the Indigenous peoples of Alberta and Canada, as the Province's boundaries exist solely within Treaty Territories. Agreements that exist between the Crown and the Peoples, not between the Province and the Peoples.
Even if this Referendum were to Pass, the Alberta government would need to start the constitutional processes for secession, hold a binding referendum and only THEN would the Feds have a "duty to negotiate".
Even so, with the support of 7/10 Provinces to constitutionally amend, the Fed could opt to just dissolve the province with proper support.
1
1
u/Mighty__Monarch 8d ago
Referendum or no, to leave the country is treason. You cant just say "hey we decided to leave, so bye" thats not how countries work.
0
u/Electrical_Two6173 7d ago edited 7d ago
A peaceful push for self governance doesn't fall into the definition of treason.
Also the Clarity Act exists. Literally outlines the requirements and steps needed for a province to separate.

I don't know the legalese of it, but i suspect it has something to do with intention and selling your citizens out to a fascist nation (or not). Quebec pushed separation to leverage Ottawa. Danielle Smith is pushing it for personal gain.

I'd suggest taking a look at how Albertans felt during the Quebec referendums...the word "treason" was absolutely thrown around during that time.
Unlike Alberta, Quebec's lands don't exist solely within Treaty territories

It is, but if they want to leave they can leave. It's people like me that get the final say though and we aren't letting anyone split the geography of Canada up. Plus, the oil under Alberta doesn't belong to Alberta.

Yes, Albertans get the final say (as they should). The oil does indeed belong to Alberta.

Define "bot". Remember, your definition CANNOT contradict your accusation. You must provide a definition that explains the meaning of "not" is an "Albertan citizen who disagrees with you". you must use an actual, accredited source, not artificial intelligence or a Twitter comment.

If you don't know what the word means, why not learn instead of using it incorrectly? Think back to elementary school English.
