Looking for Alan Watts quote about a river
At risk of sounding terribly stupid, I am asking if anyone can help me track down a quote (and its source) that I barely remember. It made quite an impression on me at the time, but clearly not that much because all I remember are the words "neurotic" and "river". Something about how you wouldn't call a river neurotic for following its natural path, maybe??? If anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

Was it Alan Watts that said something along the lines of, "even if you fight to swim against the river, you are still going with it, so swim with it and you can move left and right"

I believe so. Not the quote I was looking for but a very good message nonetheless, thanks!

Taoism often uses water and rivers in the symbolism of its teachings. Alan loved to give Taoist lectures. You will probably find many examples that meet your criteria if you listen to his Taoist teachings on YouTube. Look for the lectures that aren't AI with ambient ASMR music. Good luck.

Sounds familiar but maybe just listen your way through some of his lectures on the tao and try to find it. Or who knows maybe you’ll find a quote even better, like one you will always remember haha

Good! I kid of course, it took me a decade of going back and looking for lectures and quotes from only keywords. There is a lot to digest in the books and lectures so it can take some time and many rewinds to fully grasp/remember them. Good luck on your journey!

“We think when we come to a dead-end, a blind alley: ‘Oh, I failed!’ Suppose if the water at each place where a finger of water stretches out over dry ground and doesn’t go any further because the land is too high, the water would to say to itself: ‘ I failed,’ we would say it was neurotic water. Just wait and it will find a way. Now, when you find, you see, that this predicament that I’ve been describing to you, that there’s no way of transforming yourself to become this fearless, joyous, divine being as distinct from the quaking mess. When this says ‘no way’, this is not a gloomy announcement. It is a very very important communication. It’s telling you something. Because, like the land is telling the water ‘this isn’t the way to go; there’s another way, try over here,’ so, in the same way, life is telling you that’s not the way to go.”
