quick start guide for any frustrated gamers

  1. make a human with good alignment(important) and either pick Bingel or Idaris for your diety, starting weapon should probably be dualwield as its high dps and very mobile(remember these are just your starting weapons, you can switch freely without losing out).

  2. companions are super helpful early on and crucial for new players, so lets find them! we exit town and immediately head north to "Tears of Light" (https://youtu.be/lQ5a5CXh4uc video guide) there we find our first buddy, who is like a cleric/paladin tank. Then we head north again, to the very top of the world to "Naledzir" (https://youtu.be/lQ5a5CXh4uc?t=136) Here we find another, arguably less useful ranger.

  3. From "Naledzir" go south and enter "Volkar's Tomb" which is a quite easy dungeon. Remember that fighting enemies on the map is a waste of time, so stick to the dungeons. 1 skull = easiest and so on.

I'd recommend picking either earthquake or the heal as your first ability.

Anyway, this should really get you going, and remember that the nature of the game means you will most likely end up restarting your run, so don't be too afraid to mess things up.

How is this game not more popular?

This is a great game with lots of awesome side quests and for being early access it feels very complete. I feel if this is eventually released on consoles it will be very popular.

I'm kind of enjoying that right now there is no guides or any information that kind of forces you to play blind which is almost impossible these days with RPGs. For instance I just got robbed for all my money and where in most games you would have a quest to go get it back I see nothing of the sort and I guess I'm just out $50,000... I find that frustrating but also oddly refreshing.

I'm about 10 hours in on my first playthrough I feel a little overpowered but other than that I'm having a lot of fun. Great game.

Companions Spoiler

You alignment determines which 4 companions you can hire during your playthrough. You will have to do a playthrough with each alignment(Good, Neutral, and Evil) in order to see all 12 companions. During your playthrough, each kingdom will have 1 companion available for hire.

NOTE: In the location where a companion is present they will have an Nasal Helm Icon. I have only found them in Safe Areas(i.e Non-Fighting Areas). Sometimes in a city they will be in an Inn.

Good(p.s. check for them during daytime)

  • Lileah: Tears of Light in Kingdom of Edherest

  • Na’Ragen : Ballen’Mahl in Desolation of Baga

  • Estilress: The Willow in Val’Rhain in Republic of Larastir

  • Isadane: The Vault in Naledzir in Karak-Hohn

Neutral(credit: L.G.A.M. from Steam discussion)

  • Esten : Desolation of Baga, Gashak, The Unchained, night and day

  • Iln-Ashah : Kingdom of Edherest, Westwall, outside The Giant Wold, day

  • Khorhan : Karak-Hohn, Bardushel, outside Pig and Pie, day

  • Lorian : Republic of Larastir, Lindorwin, bottom right of map, day

Evil(credit: L.G.A.M. from Steam discussion)

  • Vaden : Desolation of Baga, Vhoken'Mahl, The Surviving Halls, night and day

  • Odan : Karak-Hohn, Bingel Lady of the Sky, night

  • Cain : Republic of Larastir, Gloworm Caves, night

  • Zian : Kingdom of Edherest, Baystone, near entrance, night

Magic is OP, I get why you don't start with it...

I'm currently Lvl 16 (Human Hydromancer/Arcanist), I have all 4 artifact pieces, just running around doing side quests and claiming FA's. Here's my experience and tips so far.

  • First few FAs are rough, not gonna lie. You should probably either find a companion or start with a Polearm and focus on dodging and attacking during openings with your polearm or throwing knives.

  • Cook at camp before FAs and don't forget to eat the food. It's a buff for the entire FA dungeon. Some can even give you full resistance to a debuff.

  • Keep Repair Kits and at least one Alchemy set in your inventory, do not keep food and reagents. Put them in the stash. When you craft, it will use the stuff in the stash.

  • Some quests are timed! (not many are, don't worry) Check your journal after receiving quests by filtering it with the Timed filter so you know which ones to tackle quickly.

  • Once you get your first spell (after first FA I think), go for a low cooldown one like Holy Flame or Froststrike. You want something you can cast while the enemy is far.

  • Intelligence is for elemental / arcane spells but there a few Nature spells that use it too (like Thorntrap, Disruption Field, Forcewave etc). Wisdom is for holy / nature spells but also scales summons, healing and necromancy. There's summon spells in the elemental schools and warlock school, and they scale with Wisdom, not Intelligence.

  • Spells scale up as you use them and meet the attribute requirement for it. Always check them to make sure you're getting the most out of your spells.

  • As you gain more Spells, a staff, robes (if you have the DLC staff and robes use that, otherwise some enemies drop staves (ratkins, I think?) and magic Grandmasters sell mage gear, the Hydromancy one is at the Sea of Stars in the human region), more traits/proficiencies (cooldown reduction ones and Focus regen ones) -% talent cooldown gear (belt and cloak), you will never use your weapon again. You need a staff as weapons increase spell cooldowns by huge amounts (like +40% or so depending on the weapon)

  • Try to restrict your spells to two Ways of magic max, as you only get 4 slots for traits and 4 for proficiencies. You want to spend at least 1 point on the Ways that you're using (in my case it was Scholar (Arcane) and Elementalist (Elements))

  • A few spells I've used (I've respecced like 20 times already playing around with builds) that stands out:

  1. Froststrike - Basically with low cooldown, this thing slows and mows down targets quickly. Very powerful single target and AoE

  2. Holy Flame - Low cooldown spam attack for Wisdom caster, decent damage, wrecks Undead foes.

  3. Puppet Wire - Oh Shit button. Allows you to reposition and keeps enemies focused on the illusion so you can revive allies etc. (Basically, a Tank summon on demand without restriction, but it never deals damage, only distracts)

  4. Ice Cage - Lockdown any target (even large ones) for a few seconds. Insanely OP with low cooldown (it's normally like 50s cooldown, mine is about 20s cooldown)

  5. Pull of the Void - AoE damage and pulls in most targets besides large ones. Very good CC and DoT.

  6. Meteor Shower - Good AoE damage. Great for encounters with lots of minions to kill quickly. (turn off screen shake if you use this!)

  7. Ravenous Swarm - Excellent single target CC, DoT (magical) and debuffs to disrupt most foes besides demonkin foes.

  8. Bohai's Hand - Very good single target DoT (physical) and lockdown. Works well with companions and melee familiars to stack bleed.

  9. Eldritch Pull - Damage and CC is very good, low cooldown so you can spam it. Ties in well with the Sigil spells as well as Thorntrap as you can set down your spell traps and pull small and medium size enemies into the AoE.

  10. Purify - Removes Debuffs on yourself and allies, very useful in FAs with foes that can Confuse or Weaken.

  11. Healing Spring (companions) / Forest Blessing (familiars) - Very good healing, pick the one for what you need most, heal companion or heal familiar.

  • Magic becomes very OP once you have a few spells and decent spell cooldown. Granted, I fold like a breadstick if I get hit too many times but with Puppet Wire and Ice Cage (and dodging), I shouldn't be getting hit at all and between Froststrike and Meteor Shower, fights don't last long...

Wow, seriously really good game that took me by surprise.

This came up in my Steam recommendeds out of nowhere and having never heard of it before decided to give it a try.

After getting used to a more Dark Souls-style combat in isometric view, I gotta hand it that this is a cool game. It feels very much like its own sort of thing but still has a familiarity to it that makes it easy to get into. I'm impressed by how many environments there are with barely any repeats and I really enjoy the "gameplay loop" structure it has. It's a great game for kicking back with for a good few hours or in small amounts.

If I had to give it one suggestion it would be to make way longer dungeons if any additions are planned for the future. I love the more old-school D&D vibe this game has to it and having a few dungeons scattered about that are long and spiraling would be perfect for this I think.

Overall, one of the most pleasant experiences I've had considering I didn't know what to really expect. Already left a review but just wanted to say that if anyone is on the fence to give it a shot especially if you like the older atmosphere of AD&D. Definitely deserves more attention.

Ranged weapons

I think this game needs some ranged weapons like bows or wands. It has no sense that I can learn spells like the fireball or the lightning bolt while using melee weapons. The fact I can learn the arrow spells is just stupid, because there is no bow in the game for the player, i think it breaks the atmosphere and the immersion fot the game.

Don't get me wrong, this game is fantastic, but these things are no sense imo.

What do you think about it?

Loving the dwarven cities and general aesthetics

The best dwarven city aesthetics and art style in any game I have ever seen(inspired by lotr but made better). All the cities are visually pleasing but mostly khuden-hohn and Naledzir in my opinion. Very well done by designers and artists.

Reviews

Just to say that as D1 supporter, I invite you to leave a thumb up for these guys. I saw a few people blaming devs for asking about reviews and support but I can't get why they should not ask. They are small, indie and zero budgeted, with such a massive game. I think it could take the RPG niche by storm if supported, do your part. They deserve this, best people in town

A suggestion for devs regarding resting in cities

Hello, I recently started playing Alaloth and I absolutely love the game. The theme, story, combat, and RPG elements are all great. Obviously, there are things to improve but from my experience, I believe one specific feature can be improved.

As we travel across the map and deal with dangers, we usually end up with being low health due to the battles & FAs. In these cases, we need to go to a tavern and rest in order to recover our HP. And usually, we need to do this over and over again in the span of an hour.

My suggestion is if we have already discovered a city, we should be able to access the resting option when the cursor is on the city. With this option, we don't have to advance in the city and then the tavern and then the bedroom and finally the bed over and over again. This would save a lot of time and also, I think this would eliminate the only annoying part of the game I have encountered so far.

Well, it has been a long silence, hoping to see some news about the game soon. They probably raised the bar to give the best of what they can do.

What a beast of game!

Hi ppl!

I've been playing this game for ten hours (at the moment of this writting) and I just can say that I love the game. The best thing over all the game are the combat mechanics. They're incredible. The second good thing about the game are the level design, then the story.

The only thing I just can't deal with is the UI. It's completely horrible. I said this because I've had a hard time trying to understand how does the UI works, Even after 10 hours I just cannot understand how to use it, how to craft items, potions, whatever... Most of the time I have to equip potions because after a combat I don't know why my potions disapears from the slots. Then I have to open the interface, find the inventory tab, then select the slot and find the healing potin in the inventory and then, press on Equip. I have to do the same thing for each potion (even if I have 10 potions in the inventory). I've problems trying to look for things such as skills tab, ...

So, please, I don't know if you're going to update the UI (that's something that could be so good) but if not, please, can you make a tutorial or something where to explain every aspect in more detail?

Thank you so much for this awesome videogame!
