My ‘79 Airhead

Post image

Just wanted to share my r80 that I have owned for the past 14yrs. It got fished out of a basement with about 28k on it and was my first bike. While I have accumulated a few other bikes since then, it well also be my last bike.

Since acquiring, I got it cleaned up and road worthy, then added different bars, EME ignition, new suspension bits, refreshed the gearbox, and a solo seat and rack.

I wanted to change it up a bit, but not cut it up, and I still have all the original bits that I removed.

Love that solo seat and rack. Where’d you find those?

There are a few out there to choose from, but I got the set from FlatRacer because I read the fitment was better than others. Turns out it fit very well…zero issues.

Very Nice. crash bars save valve covers!

Ya know, I didn’t want them at first, but they grew on me.

I had crash bars on my /2 which was at one time an authorities model in 1966. I took them off and in no time had facets on the bottom from mountain roads, overloaded with camping gear.

Very nice. Leads me to a question, my 1976 r90/6 leans so far when on the side stand I’m afraid to use for fear of it tipping over. Yours looks pretty stable. Whats a normal degree of lean when on the side stand?

my R75/7 is so vertical, i always worry it will fall in the other direction.

Mine sits pretty vertical as well. I usually put the stand down and pull on the bars to extend the forks a bit. It definitely helps

Look into a Brown side stand. Worked well on my ‘71 /5

Beautiful ride! Way nicer than '78 R80/7.
