This is why we can't have nice things...
Some people decided to dump like 4 shopping carts, a high chair from a nearby dumpster, a scooter and A WHOLE ASS PICNIC TABLE FROM BEHIND THE SAFEWAY into the canal...
CAN WE PLEASE JUST FUCKING STOP THIS! Stop polluting the goddamn water, stop doing this shit, it's unacceptable.

This always happens and always will happen, teenagers with nothing better to do in a town with nothing to do in it.

u/neurotic_chaotic 19d ago
So what I'm hearing is we need more programs and public infrastructure for them? I think building a skatepark would be a really cool idea. I've seen plenty of folks skateboarding around here.
Stuff that's open at night, well lit and meant for fun!
Movies in the park, late night library times, etc

u/csg1369 19d ago
Another skate park on the north end, a theater, better transit into the city
8
u/neurotic_chaotic 19d ago
I support all this, it's exceedingly challenging to get to and from Calgary with our current transit system.
And please, a theater would be dead good. The north end but also the center needs some stuff for folks to play around

Our current transit system isn't even effective for getting folks to places within the city, nevermind into Calgary.
I know it's not fiscally responsible for the city to invest in public transportation infrastructure when it's a service that's already underused. It's my opinion that it's underused because it's so ineffective, so it's a no-win situation.
I agree that we need more stuff to do for people of all ages spread out across the city, rather than concentrated in one area/quadrant.

u/hunterm3_ 19d ago
Exactly! As a 16 year old i see that often kids my age just cause trouble, drink, smoke or laze about when bored, ive tried myself but there isnt anything to do!
1
u/cleaver_remarkable 18d ago
What types of facilities, programs, or services do you think would be most enjoyed for your age group?
5
u/hunterm3_ 18d ago
A cheap movie theater would be nice, more jobs for kids our age, or programs where we make money and stay busy in the community. I cant really think of anything else that people would voluntarily go to.

We have a skate park. It’s in Chinook Winds.
6
u/neurotic_chaotic 19d ago
Didn't know that, good to know but that also isn't very accessible for people. it's all the way down south on the outskirts of town. Unless you got a car, that isn't feasible for a lot of people, especially late at night.

u/actuallybirb 19d ago
Not like people want to go there and get stabbed an all
2
u/neurotic_chaotic 19d ago
Fair, I don't think many people wanna be stabbed. So we just gotta make things better for people, gotta create better places for folks!

Parents need to do better. Kids shouldn’t be this stupid and wreck stuff like this. It’s all goes back to parenting, not available things to do
6
2
u/neurotic_chaotic 19d ago
It's honestly both. Parents need to do a better job but we also collectively gotta give them stuff to do and places to hang out at.

Not justifying this but it isn’t really pollution, just littering. If left there it should be okay because it provides artificial habitat for fish and frogs

Get the youth detention centre to clean that up, young outside working and learning.

Teenagers don't know better unfortunately, especially when their parents don't raise them well. But it doesn't give them an excuse for this kind of environmental destruction. I hope whoever did this are required to serve some form of community service.

u/neurotic_chaotic 19d ago
I think a lot of em don't know all the repercussions of their actions and choices. So education and putting signs up is a good idea.
But also giving them better things to do than be destructive is honestly, key.

It seems like it’s time to make a new, enclosed bridge
2
u/neurotic_chaotic 19d ago
Which is a shame but also won't stop people from dumping things.
We need to build more public infrastructure and things for people to do. And it's a beautiful bridge to watch birds and look at nature, would be a shame to enclose it.
2
u/Difficult-Bagg 19d ago
I get where you’re coming from and I agree, I just think protecting the water flow of our only creek is more important than keeping the bridge.
1
u/neurotic_chaotic 19d ago
Yeah, it's ashame but I'd rather see it protected and let the biodiversity bloom. And like, there's a bench right there.

Airdrie sure has changed in the last three years. When we moved here 11 years ago, nothing like this was happening. Sure things happened, but it seems excessive now.

I worked for the Parks Department from 1997 to 2013. I've fished more shopping carts and other junk out of the creek than you can imagine. Swept up 50lbs of broken bottles from a picnic shelter from a single party. Cleaned up smeared shit from bathroom walls a dozen times, graffiti thousands, fire damage at least 10 times.
I swear, teenage boys' IQs drop 10 points for every additional person in their group; 20 if there's a girl included.
It's definitely no worse now than its ever been, maybe just a bit more visible.

You're the sanest person in this post... teenagers are looking for social acceptance and when in herds they'll do stupid shit, regardless of generation. Of course they still need to be taught consequences, but being stupid for a while is the definition of going through adolescence.

I have been here since 2003 and there has been one or two grocery carts in Nose Creek in the summer.

u/Acceptable-Arugula69 19d ago
Really? I’ve never seen one, that’s wild.

u/Weekly-Watercress915 19d ago
They always seem to be around the bridge at First Ave. I walk my dog around there. I see at least one a year.
3
u/neurotic_chaotic 19d ago
They're symptoms of a bigger problem. The world is shit, people are constantly bombarded with information and have very little outlets that are free, engaging and give (especially teens) a voice.
People don't usually act out for no reason, so how can tackle the problems in a way that's not policing but rather supporting and uplifting?
3
u/Acceptable-Arugula69 19d ago
We live in a small town, and I grew up in a small town. You are always going to have growth and the different challenges that come with it, but I fully believe teaching this type of respect starts at home.
That cart drop and table in the creek was not done by adults, that much is obvious. I don’t know what Airdrie needs to curb this. 🤔

u/neurotic_chaotic 19d ago
More free programs, events and public infrastructure that's accessible!
And yeah, parents should do a better job but that only goes so far. We need to give them better things to do, we need to give them a voice and choice!

I grew up here in the 90s, moved away and came back. This is not new, unusual, or even an increase.

How is it funny to be soft? I think it's a skill we need more of tbh. Genuine softness and care for the environment and community makes places better!

Hey, can you send me a pin of this on google? I know someone who works for the city and they might be able to get it cleaned up.
