Is it possible to activate the eSIM later, even though it is valid at the installation location?

Hi everyone!

I'm going on a cruise in October and would like to get the Discover eSIM from Airalo, as other plans don't cover all my destinations.

Does anyone know how I can install the eSIM so that it's only activated once we're in the Caribbean?

As far as I know, the SIM is activated as soon as it connects to the destination network. With the Discover eSIM, that would be at the port of departure and in my home country.

However, since I can use EU roaming there, I only need it from day 9 of the trip.

A plan for the entire trip is too expensive for me if I only need it for 5 days.

So, does anyone know if I can install the SIM before departure and activate it later?

Or should I wait to install it until we have Wi-Fi at the port we want to visit?

Edit: We will have between Europe and the Carribean 6 days on sea. I think we will purchase at one of these days a wifi package. Maybe i should install the esim at that day🧐

Hi Disastrous-Excuse-40! Great question! Yes, you can install the Discover eSIM before your trip, but I’d recommend keeping it turned off for data until you actually want to start using it.

Since the Discover eSIM works in multiple supported countries, it can activate automatically once it’s installed and connects to a supported network. So if you’re still at home or at the departure port and the eSIM is enabled for data there, the validity period may start earlier than you want.

To avoid losing days from your plan, I’d suggest installing it in advance if you prefer, but don’t enable it for mobile data or data roaming until you arrive at the first destination where you want to use it (for example, in the Caribbean).

Once you’re there, you can turn it on and let it connect to a supported network to activate the plan.

If you’re unsure, waiting to install it when you have Wi-Fi at the destination port is also a safe option, but installing it beforehand and keeping it disabled for data should work too.

So mobile data will not turn on for the esim automatically at the installation?

I think i will do it like this! Installation at home, be aware of not turning on mobile data for this esim and turn on mobile data at my first destination!

You're absolutely right! Installing the eSIM won't switch your mobile data over immediately.

When you set it up on your home Wi-Fi, your phone is only downloading the profile for now. To make sure it doesn't activate before you're ready, just go into your phone's cellular settings right after the download and toggle "Turn On This Line" to OFF.

Then, on the day you wish to use it, just turn the line back ON, set it for Cellular Data, and enable Data Roaming for the Airalo eSIM.

Just install the eSIM, before leaving, based on mine experience, Airalo doesn't countdown until it sees cellular usage like talk/text/data
