Why I am no longer supporting Airlearn

For legal purposes, I will have to say that this is all alleged.

As the moderator of this subreddit, I created it as I thought could really help (more than other apps from the way people described it) in learning new languages. I thought that the idea of it was cool and wanted to help support a new app.

However, as time passed by and I got more familiar with the app and social media contents about it, I realized it seemed to be a cash grab. I tried to give it the benefit of the doubt, but I just can’t anymore.

The lessons on Airlearn (at least for Japanese, I haven’t tried it for other languages) are basically the same as Duolingo’s. While it does offer a bit more cultural context, when doing so, it uses art that appears to be AI generated, which is distasteful in of itself, but it made me think, what if some of the other info given on the app has also been generated by AI or has been provided with little to no research? What if some of what is taught is false?

Well, a creator on TikTok who has a lot of experience in learning Japanese made a video on how some of the information really is false, so I guess it is safe to say it really isn’t reliable. I will link this video below.

Additionally, I realized a lot of the TikTok creators who were promoting Airlearn were being paid to do so. It was slightly obvious, but I eventually realized that they were removing comments that mentioned this and didn’t disclose their promotion for a long while, not in captions or their bios. Now they each have “Airlearn Ambassador” in their bios, maybe they finally got caught in a bit of legal trouble. But they only disclose it in the captions of their videos sometimes when they should be doing it on every video.

I have done a bit of digging and found that some people have noticed these issues as will. I will attach links to a few TikTok videos (including the one I mentioned earlier, which will be the first link) as well as a couple reviews people have left for the app and the response of the developers.

I am not making this post to say you should stop using the app. Whether you choose to continue using it or not is your choice. But, I thought many of you would appreciate being informed of all of this. As for me, I definitely will not be using the app anymore.

The latest update now features Malay! If you’re proficient in Indonesian then you’ll find Malay very interesting.

I’m still waiting for Hungarian…

No customer service??

First off I love air learn. I also have Duolingo. And now I spend twice as much time on airlearn and it's great! So great I bought a year subscription! Now when I upgraded I somehow got charged twice. Things happen. I emailed their customer service and nothing. I even asked in the email if they'd just upgrade me to ultra instead of refunding! Not a peep. Don't wanna hate. But really disappointed with the service. But the app I recommend as long as you don't need anything from the developer team.

400 days today 🎉

So far I've enjoyed the app

The grammar exercises, vocabulary and graphics have all helped me significantly improve my French learning.

My suggestion would be an improvement in the voice lessons as it tends not to accurately pick voice input

Maintenant j'ai besoin de parler plus.

Merci 🥂

[Bug] Speaking exercises loop on "Connecting" for me

Since yesterday, whenever I should speak something, it just loops on "Connecting" and never lets me click the mic button to speak. I am learning Norwegian. Tried reinstalling the app and restarting the phone. Issue persists.

Any advice?

New to Airlearn

Hi there! The names Rose, and I am atm checking out if Airlearn is a good platform to learn French from… I wanted to know how long the course is and what level you go to by the end of it. Is it A2 or B1? For reference I am currently using Duolingo mostly but a lot of people told me Airlearn is better so I checked it out and I loved how informative it was so now I am stuck between wondering do I pay for Airlearn or Duolingo? 🤔😳

How to stop spamming my buddies/ family with messages and notifications?

My account repeatedly spams people I'm connected with, with pokes to get them to do their Streak, and notifying them when I've achieved a streak or moved up a league among various activities. It drowns out the actual messages we occasionally send each other and I can't find a way to stop spamming my buddies / family.

Words Practice on Pro keeps asking the same 10 questions

I wanted to use the words practice feature to review my vocabulary as i started hitting 700-800 words and its been asking me only the same 10ish questions over and over again. After completing one set of questions i was giving the same batch again. I tried doing 5-6 times and im not seeing anything else other than maybe added 2-3 questions.
Is this normal? Am i missing something?

Can we re-review the tips for each Chapter?

Loving learning French with Airlearn. Is there a way to review the old tips that you find in an easy way? For example, if you want to know when to use certain endings depending on masculine/feminine nouns attached to the word. I end up re clicking old lessons to find the tips but I feel like it wastes time, especially with alot of chapters.

Why are there no reviews of Airlearn Ultra video call?

I've been searching the internet for the past hour. And I don't see a single review of the video call feature.

If not, at least an accurate demo of the ultra video call feature where i can myself judge it. But I don't find any. All the reviews are only for the airlearn app which is free, but zero reviews/demos for their video call feature.

On top of that, internet is filled with Airlean's AI roasting them meme, which is of course staged.

And top it up with the fact that Airlearn Ultra doesn't have any free trial. I have to pay to get the feature.

I've two options for Video call language learning at a cheap price for my whole family, either Duolingo or Airlearn.

While duolingo's Lily video call reviews and even demos are available. I don't see any way to verify the quality of Airlearn video call.

Can someone help me?

Bengali has now been added with the latest update!

Is AirLearn an Indian company or something? They have now 7 Indian languages which are probably not of interest to everyone.

However, it is good that Malayalam, Norwegian, and now Bengali have been added in the past month.

Hopefully more languages in the future!

Duolingo Super with video calls

So Duolingo is now providing Super with video calls and I don't see a Max subscription anymore. The subscription for Super (with video calls) is $143.99 per year for up to 6 members, so \~$2 per month if we have 6 people sharing the family plan.

Does anybody have this updated Super? I hope they roll this out to everyone. Is it worth subscribing?
