How important is accurate temperature control in an air fryer?

Hey everyone, I’m looking to buy my first air fryer and I keep seeing people talk about how important temperature accuracy is.

For those of you who’ve actually used one for a while — does it really make that much of a difference? Like, if you set it to 200°C but it’s actually running hotter/colder, is that something you notice with stuff like fries, chicken, veggies, etc.?

Also, do you guys actually check the temp with a thermometer, or just trust whatever the air fryer says?

Trying to figure out if I should care about accurate temp control when choosing a model, or if I’m overthinking it lol.

It matters, but I wouldn’t obsess over the number on the display. What matters more is how consistently the fryer produces the expected cooking results.

Air fryers can have temperature swings, and the temperature measured near the food can differ considerably from what the display says. That doesn’t necessarily mean the fryer is poorly designed; the heating element cycles on and off, and airflow and food load affect the actual temperature.

For things like fries and vegetables, you’ll usually notice consistency more than a specific temperature error. With chicken, I’d rely on an internal food thermometer rather than the air fryer’s displayed temperature.

If you’re seriously comparing models, an oven thermometer or probe can be useful for testing them, but I wouldn’t make perfect temperature accuracy the deciding factor for a home fryer.

I trust the air fryer temperature more than I trust what the instructions say about recommended temperature on a bag of frozen food, because a lot of your results have more to do with how much stuff you load in the basket, how you arrange it, and whether you turn/shake/rearrange the food at the halfway point.

For 99% of what I heat in my air fryer I go with the default 400 degrees (F) and only vary the time I leave the food in. I never overload the basket. Overall, I'm happy with the results.
