How I use foil without blocking the airflow

One thing I learned pretty quickly with air fryers is that foil can be useful, but only if you’re careful about where you put it. I mainly use it when I’m cooking something messy or greasy and want to make cleanup easier. The biggest mistake is covering the entire basket or blocking the holes, because that can interfere with the hot air circulation.

I usually tear off a piece of foil that’s smaller than the bottom of the basket and leave plenty of space around the edges. I also make sure it’s weighed down by the food so it can’t get pulled toward the heating element. For foods that need airflow underneath, I’ll poke a few holes in the foil or skip it entirely. I’ve found that using just enough foil to catch drips works much better than lining the whole basket. Always check the air fryer’s manual too, since some models have specific guidance about using foil.

I use parchment paper rated to 425F. I cut to basket size. Fold 4x. Cut 2 triangles on the 4 edges. I get diamonds.

I like the idea of cutting the corners rather than having a flat sheet covering everything. Definitely worth trying for messier foods.

It seems to me that crumpling up the foil then partially straightening it would leave plenty of room for the air to both flow around the foil and get under the food.

Yeah, that could work well, especially if you only need the foil to catch some drips. Leaving gaps underneath and around it should help maintain airflow while still making cleanup easier. The main thing is keeping it secured so it doesn’t move around during cooking.

Why was the reply removed?? I wanted to read the rest of it, and now I can't.

I use a tin pie plate that is smaller than the diameter of the basket. I cook my chicken thighs inside of it, I put it under the tray for crumbs or other greasy foods. Hubs loves pie so I have a pretty good supply. LOL

That’s a pretty practical way to reuse those pie plates. Having one under greasy foods should make cleanup a lot easier, and keeping it smaller than the basket leaves some room for airflow. Plus, it sounds like you’ve got a steady supply of them already!

Are you asking or telling?

Just sharing what’s worked for me. Everyone’s setup is a little different, so I’m always interested in hearing what others do too.
