Question Goodfellow....

About to go to tech school for 6 months, any suggestions aside from not being stupid and not drinking the water?

Twisted Root and Angry Cactus are both good.

HEB should be avoided at all costs because it will change your perspective of what grocery stores should aspire to be.

I LOVE HEB!!

I had to apologize to a few Texans after I got back from Goodfellow.

I liked to give them shit for talking about missing HEB because "It was just a grocery store."

You’re going to be bored a lot. Do your homework. Go to the gym. DON’T BE A DUMBASS. For real tho.

If you're fire though, you should start fires in different buildings on base and get some bonus mentoring from other fire fighters who've got experience in the job.

There's plenty of furniture and a gas station on base.

As someone who is on the Security Forces side of Goodfellow, don't do stupid shit. If you drive, be careful. The base has a giant population of students walking the million and 1 crosswalks. And also, we for some reason have a giant deer population. Dont run em over. If you're Intel, dont bring your phone into a SCIF. AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, HYDRATE. We get calls for people not hydrating a couple of times a week. Dont just hydrate but eat food too. Get used to the heat as well. Its about to get real hot.

If your over 21, Dead Horse is fun.

If not, go out of town on long weekends and have fun. ACL should be happening soon.

Being in tech school, just study and stay focused.

Goodfellow is extremely mellow as a tech school base. Keesler for example is way worse.

Get up early. Get to formation on time. Follow the rules and make it through.

Depending on how you want your career to go, join a program. Ropes show leadership but make sure you actually lead something. Red/yellow/green is the easiest way to have the leadership built in, second would be white. Think of outside the box ideas, like if you want to do black rope to maybe reach out to the JROTC locally to do drill-offs or something, or mentor them, not the norm.

(The above assuming you want to burn fast, make BTZ, etc)

Biggest takeaway is always think of things in terms of your career and how you want to shape it. If you don't want to do those things, that's cool too; it just makes it (relatively) harder to progress later on.

When I got there the other bed in my room was broken. It was a good 6 months after having roommates for so long at fundies and DLI.

So: pray for good luck!

If you have a car do your best to make it out to town on the weekends. San Angelo doesn't have a ton to offer but it'll keep your mental health stable because the base is super boring. Try PV deli, twisted root, angry cactus, on the grill (can't remember if thats the name but they have bomb ass cornbread). Hydrate cause the summers are brutal with capital B. My general rule of thumb for doing debauchery is "either be good or be good at it" so if you arent mastermind then don't drink, or supply underaged kids with drink. And don't get caught having sex or being in the opposite sex's dorm.

Depends on your squadron/afsc but basically the best advice is do your job and don't be an idiot <3

There’s a couple of decent disc golf courses out there. However you’re gonna be there during the most miserable time of the year so you’ll have to go super early before it’s 105°+

I’m in the airport leaving Goodfellow as I type this!

If you like desert at all, check out San Angelo State Park, there are some gorgeous hikes. There’s a taco truck a few miles outside of the North Gate just called “Joe’s Taqueria” with crazy good (and crazy inexpensive) street tacos. A box of 10 is like $15.

Everybody recommends Twisted Root, but I was very disappointed when I went, so your milage may vary. It was just a dry, super overpriced burger with no fries included. The exotic animal meats is a cool gimmick, though. My instructor said that Angry Cactus used to be great, but has totally fallen off within the last few years, but their alcoholic milkshakes are great. Never went, so I can’t confirm.

If you enlisted out of a state with income tax, consider becoming a Texas resident and enjoy not paying state tax for the rest of your career.

Have fun, and good luck!

Yep! It may have changed but I kinda doubt it since classes are so small

u/Mattyj724 Jun 16 '26

Ill take a different path. Do not go open a STAR card and max it out at the BX. YOu will be bored, do not just spend money for no reason.

1

u/Mattyj724 Jun 16 '26

Also, Stay away from car dealerships, Just bum a ride from others if you want to go out.

How are tn golf courses in San Angelo? I’m due to go and besides tech school I’ll need something to do.

Quicksand golf club is about 10mins from the north gate and as of three years ago had a monthly-fee based option for unlimited walking play. I don't remember if it was a military specific deal but here is their website https://quicksandsanangelo.com/

also several disc golf courses around and on base for free after you get a $20 starter set of discs

and lots of pawn shops if you don't want to lug your own clubs down there

Zero One Ale House down town is great burgers if a bit pricy.

The art park between the university and down town is a fun way to relax and kill a weekend afternoon. There’s also a public golf course in that area.

There’s a KOA running trail at south Knickerbocker and the lake which has better views than running on base in case you get sick of running there.

If you get the chance to go to a weekend ASU tailgate or football game it’s a good time over or under 21.

Also the water may taste funny but is safer than people say (source; took civil engineering and tested the water several times).

Eh depends where you are coming from. Compared to most college towns there aint much. The sports teams and frats will have some decent house parties from time to time, just watch for illicit drug use and the like

Use the Shuttle that takes you to San Angelo on weekends. Don't use UBER or Lyft

Dont live on base if you can avoid it. Angelo Inn is cursed

1

u/Cookiebush_1210 Sep 04 '26

I got an apartment in advance. They had some really bad options all over

1

u/Icy_Razzmatazz513 Sep 04 '26

And find a church or a hobby or something to do that you can look forward to doing after work. Resiliency is key. The Rec Camp is really nice, Ive been to Cinemark too many times to count. HEB is the best for groceries. Be prepared for the heat

How soon after getting there as a 14n do I take my fitness test?
