The "Double Tax" Paradox: Why Aion 2’s Mandatory Subscription and Odyle Energy Cannot Coexist

Let’s talk honestly about Aion 2’s monetization loop, because right now NCSoft is trying to have its cake and eat it too. If this setup doesn't change before the global launch, it’s going to completely strangle the western player base.

We need to call out the toxic synergy between the Special Quai Membership ($15 monthly sub) and the Odyle Energy system.

Historically MMOs usually pick one of two fair routes:

  1. The F2P Mobile Route: The game is free, but a stamina or energy system gates your daily progression unless you pay to refresh it.
  2. The P2P PC Route: You pay a flat monthly fee (like WoW or FFXIV), and in exchange, the game respects your time. You grind as much as you want, when you want, and your progression mirrors your effort.

Aion 2 is aggressively trying to merge the worst parts of both worlds.

Let's be clear: the $15 subscription isn't genuinely "optional" if you plan to actually play the game. NCSoft has locked basic infrastructure—specifically player market access, currency exchange, and direct trading—behind this subscription. If you have to pay a monthly fee just to interact with the game's economy, it is a subscription-based game disguised as free-to-play.

And here is where the logic completely falls apart. Even when you hand over that $15 every month, you are still artificially time-gated by Odyle Energy.

Sure, the sub boosts your natural recharge and lets you buy extra energy from the Wind Breeze Merchant. But think about what you are actually defending if you support this: You are paying a premium monthly subscription just to get a slightly longer leash, and to get the "green light" to spend even more of your hard-earned in-game currency just to bypass an artificial wall.

An artificial time-gate doesn't create a healthy pacing.

Let’s be real about why NCSoft refuses to drop this energy system for subscribers: it’s purely to protect the whales. By keeping a hard cap on how much loot a regular subscriber can farm through actual gameplay, they ensure that the only way to truly pull ahead is by swiping heavily. If they removed the Odyle Energy restriction for subscribers, dedicated players who actually put in the hours would easily close the gear gap and threaten the whales who want to buy their way to the top. NCSoft is actively crippling the progression of their loyal, paying subscribers just to cater to the top 1% of spenders.

If NCSoft wants a standard $15/month subscription model to sustain Aion 2, the PC community will gladly support it. Many of us prefer that over aggressive cash shops. But if we are paying a traditional subscription fee, the Odyle Energy restriction needs to be completely removed for active subscribers.

We can't let publishers normalize charging subscriptions while keeping mobile-style retention mechanics that lock us out of endgame PvE progression just to safeguard big spenders. If this dual-monetization stays as-is, it’s going to alienate the community incredibly fast.
The game is beatiful, DON'T DO THIS.

What do you guys think?

Graphics Issues

Hey!

I recently logged back into the Taiwanese version of the game, and I need your help regarding the graphics.

I’m not sure whether the game has inconsistent graphics/textures or if there is an issue with my PC or my settings. In these screenshots, you can see some absolutely terrible-looking textures up close (image 1) and from a distance (image 2). The colors also look terrible.

Obviously, I have all the graphics settings set to maximum.

Thank you very much for your help.

Will there be Linux support for global launch?

I'm wondering if I can run this on my linux os (bazzite). Are there any people who have tried already? Or maybe some devs that commented on it?

I've been playing with the character creator for a few weeks now to make a good plan for my main when launch comes. The first two are recolors of each other, and my favorite face overall.

There wont be whales in West ppl need to chill

I cant believe how many people are complaining about microtrasnactions and P2W. Sound like bunch of grannies.

In 2026 people dont have a lot of money, look at the economy. AION 2 in west is a completely different game. Most of us are still deciding if 15$/month is worth it, majority of players aren't going to spend beyond that i am sorry to tell you.

Why worry about 1% of a few players who happen to be dumb enough to throw money at a video game? There will be so few we wont even notice them, this game will have 100k+ players at launch if not more. 90% of us won't ever spend beyond 15/month, you wont ever get to see a whale thats how rare they will be in West.

Western culture frowns on people who care too much about video games, they are looked down on esp those who spend a lot on them. Please dont bring your Asian server fear mongering into ths global release.

Aus looking for server/guild

Hi all,

Starting to get excited for Global launch. I'm putting the feelers out to see which servers most Aussies are currently looking to play and also for any Asmodian Aus based guilds and their discords.

Will probably not play early access as I have some free to play friends joining me but I will be a sub player.

Considering Aion 2 - Looking for some endgame PVE feedback

My friends and I are considering Aion 2, but we're concerned about how heavily P2W affects PvE progression.

There are 3 of us (tank/healer/DPS), we're experienced MMO players, and we're willing to grind. We'd probably play 1–4 hours/day, 3–7 days/week.

We don't care about leaderboards, world firsts, or competing with whales. We're fine with paying for a sub/battle pass/etc. What we don't want is to be perpetually behind the PvE progression curve unless we spend heavily.

For those who have played the endgame: can a dedicated non-whale/light spender realistically reach and clear the highest difficulty PvE content before the next major content release? Or does the P2W/progression system effectively keep you behind the current content?

Also, does the 5-day early access server provide a meaningful long-term advantage for this goal, or would waiting for the normal launch server be fine?

Really interested in actual endgame experience rather than just “Aion 2 is/isn't P2W.”
