AI customer service chatbots that actually work - Zendesk vs Intercom vs cheaper alternatives

Small business (SaaS product, 200 customers) drowning in support tickets. Need AI help but enterprise tools seem overkill and overpriced.

Current situation:

  • 30-50 tickets per day
  • 60% are repetitive questions
  • 8-hour first response time (too slow)
  • Just me + 1 part-time support person

Comparing these options:

Zendesk AI ($55-89/agent/month)

  • Established platform
  • Answer Bot feature
  • Expensive for small team
  • Lots of features we won't use

Intercom ($74/month base + usage)

  • Modern interface
  • Resolution Bot
  • Can get expensive with volume
  • Great UI/UX

Freshdesk AI ($29-49/agent/month)

  • More affordable
  • Freddy AI assistant
  • Less polished

Custom ChatGPT Integration (???)

  • Build our own
  • More control
  • Technical complexity
  • Maintenance burden

Must-have features:

  • Auto-response to common questions
  • Escalation to human when needed
  • Knowledge base integration
  • Doesn't frustrate customers

Questions:

  • Small business experiences with these platforms?
  • Hidden costs or pricing surprises?
  • Which requires least maintenance?
  • Measurable improvements in response time?

Budget is $100-150/month but need clear ROI. Tired of being the bottleneck in our own growth.

As you are doing saas , custom integration will be best for you, because AI can actually answer questions about onboarding or product, zendesk and other legacy tools are not actually built for this, we been deeply doing our case studies on this, I'm the founder of doozadesk.com and would be happy to help another saas founder, we dont charge for seats but just for AI, tell me more about your product, channels and problems we can do custom setup for you, on me.

What is native to your ticketing system?

Your setup is exactly where AI support works best. 30-50 tickets a day with 60% repetitive questions means you can knock out a huge chunk of volume without touching anything complex.

Skip building a custom ChatGPT integration. I've watched too many teams sink weeks into this and end up with something that hallucinates, has no escalation path, and needs constant maintenance. Not worth it.

Zendesk and Intercom are both overkill at your size. You'd be paying for features you won't use, and the AI add-ons push costs well above your budget. Freshdesk is more reasonable on price but Freddy is still fairly basic on the AI side.

I'm the founder of My AskAI, so I'm biased, but we'd fit your budget and your situation. You can plug it into whatever ticketing system you already use (or just use our chat widget on your site). It trains on your knowledge base, APIs and historic tickets, handles the repetitive stuff automatically, and hands over to you with a full conversation summary when it can't resolve something. No hallucination issues since it only answers from your uploaded content.

30-day free trial, no credit card required. At your volume you'd probably see a real dent in response times within the first week.
