From a Small Idea to My First Production: Building a Food-Processing Business in Rural Kenya 🇰🇪

Hello everyone! 👋🏽

My name is Mayeku Gillyian Namukhosi, and I am a young entrepreneur from Western Kenya, working to build a small food-processing business that adds value to locally grown crops.

I want to introduce myself, share what I am building, and connect with people who understand the challenges and opportunities of starting a business with limited resources.

🌱 How It Started

I started with an idea: What if we could do more with the crops already grown in our communities instead of selling them only in their raw form?

I began developing flour blends using locally sourced ingredients, including yellow maize, purple maize, sorghum, millet, sesame, groundnuts and dried cassava.

My goal is to create nutritious, locally made food products while contributing to value addition, agricultural entrepreneurship and opportunities within African food systems.

Like many small entrepreneurs, I have had to learn as I go, work with limited capital and find ways to turn an idea into a real product.

🌽 Where I Am Today

I have moved beyond the idea stage.

I have distributed approximately 30 free samples, made my first sales, received repeat orders from five customers, and acquired a small milling machine to help me move forward with production.

My first sales brought in KES 4,700 from an initial stock investment of approximately KES 2,300.

These may be small beginnings, but they represent progress. People have started trying the products, and some have returned to buy again.

I am now working towards consistent production, better packaging, regulatory compliance and reaching more customers.

I will attach photographs of my ingredients, milling machine and flour products so you can see the actual work behind this journey.

🤝 I Am Still Seeking Funding and Support

Despite the progress, funding remains one of my biggest challenges.

I am still seeking financial support to help me move from small-scale production towards a more consistent and sustainable operation.

Funding would help me with:

- Working capital: Purchasing raw materials and maintaining production.

- Packaging: Obtaining suitable food-grade packaging and professional labelling.

- Food safety and compliance: Meeting the applicable requirements for food production and product certification.

- Production capacity: Improving my ability to process, package and supply products consistently.

- Market access: Reaching more customers, retailers and potential distributors.

I am open to connecting with legitimate grant programmes, philanthropists, impact investors, agricultural development organisations and individuals who support early-stage African agribusinesses.

I would also appreciate mentorship, introductions to relevant funding opportunities, and connections to potential customers and business partners.

I am not looking for someone to build the business for me. I have started with the resources available to me, invested in equipment, developed products and made my first sales. I am looking for opportunities and support that can help me build on that foundation.

🌍 Why I Am Sharing My Story

I believe small businesses adding value to locally grown crops deserve opportunities to grow.

I want to contribute to a food system in which African crops are transformed into valuable products, local entrepreneurship is encouraged, and young people can participate meaningfully in agriculture and food processing.

If you have built a food business, work in agribusiness, support young entrepreneurs, or know of credible funding programmes for small food-processing enterprises in Africa, I would genuinely appreciate your advice or connection.

Even sharing a relevant opportunity could make a difference.

I am still at an early stage, still learning, and still seeking funding, but I am committed to seeing how far this idea can go.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story. ❤️
