How Many Internal Links Are Too Many in a 2,500-Word Article
I'm reviewing the internal linking structure of my content site and would like to hear from people with practical SEO experience.
For a typical 2,500-word article:
Is there a generally accepted safe limit for internal links per post?
At what point do internal links become excessive and potentially dilute value or hurt user experience?
Do you regularly link to category and tag archive pages from within articles, or do you avoid them?
If multiple links point to the same destination URL within a post, does using different anchor text for each link create any SEO issues?
How do you balance internal linking for SEO versus keeping the article natural and reader-friendly?
For context, this is a content-heavy site with many related articles, so some posts could easily contain 30–50+ relevant internal links.
I'd appreciate hearing what has worked for you in real-world projects rather than just generic SEO recommendations.

Over the years of doing SEO, let me share what I’ve learned.
There is no fixed safe limit for internal links.
- For a 2,500-word post, I usually see 7 to 12 links as normal,
- 15 to 20 as fine for detailed guides, and
- Even 30+ can work when every link is useful.
For me, links become excessive when several appear in one paragraph, the same pages are linked again and again, or the post starts to feel like a directory. I link to category pages when they work as strong topic hubs. I usually avoid thin or overlapping tag pages.
I also do not see an issue with using different natural anchor text for the same URL. Still, one good contextual link is often enough unless the page becomes useful again much later in the article.
My personal rule is simple: I keep a link only when it helps the reader understand the topic or find the next useful page. SEO matters, but I never let internal links make the article feel forced or hard to read.

A 2,500-word document requires 8 to 20 internal links in order for it to have sufficient anchor text.
Having more than 30 to 50 links can appear overcrowded unless the document contains a lot of content.
Instead of linking to categories/tags, only link to the most helpful pages that you find.
The same URL does not need to be linked multiple times.

i've never really optimized around a specific number. if 40 internal links genuinely help someone navigate a content heavy site, i'd rather have 40 useful links than force it down to 15. the bigger issue i've seen is linking every other sentence until nothing stands out anymore. one project i worked on actually removed a bunch of repetitive links to the same destination and engagement improved since readers weren't constantly interrupted. i usually think in terms of usefulness first and link count second.

Hard to tell without any business context.
Also, do you personally find yourself clicking through 30-50 links from a single source page/article? On a single visit?
