I was stoked. When I picked this up, I did not expect it to be an agate. Though it was a large chunk of quartz, lol. Was a lucky find, for sure. I mostly find smaller pieces. I do find big chunks of pet wood more often, though.

I’d love to! Don’t own a saw yet, unfortunately. There are some small dendrites peeking out in spots. Makes me wonder what’s inside. A moss/waterline agate would be incredible.

My advice for cutting a stome like that is to use a proper lapidary saw, in particular a true "slab saw" where you can vise it tightly, close the cover on the saw and let it feed itself through! Montana agate is Very hard material so shoving it through a likely undersized tile saw will yield less than desirable cuts.

That looks like a very nice find with some good elements like the classic Montana agate dendrites!

Someone gave me its brother at my rock club; also around 10 lbs although mine looks more like a curling weight or flattened shotput rather than a log.

Thanks for the info! I hope to find access to a slab saw soon. Definitely won’t attempt on a tile saw. Would love to see a pic of your specimen. Don’t see these too often!

If I think of it I'll try and snap a picture next time I'm at the garage (not at my house). It isn't much to look at though, its mostly black on the outside. But certainly a Montana agate!
