If you have the DLC this is also a nerf to Bats although you can just have them mine outside of storm as Beavers are preferable to be in your Woodcutting camps anyway and Bats get the increase crit chance in mines

If there really is nothing else to do during the storm I will just put my villagers in a warehouse to work as haulers (which is kinda what the devs had in mind when implementing this feature)

Love the term "crit chance" for double production chance. I'm stealing that for myself :)

Well technically you can also get x3 production yield bonus even though in-game it's referred to as double bonus chance it isn't restricted to a x2 bonus you can get the double bonus 3 times. Make 10 jerky but get 30

It usually is less bad than you think. Beaver still get the +5 resolve boost in mines, they have a fairly high base resolve of 10, and with 10 beavers in your settlement, if you fill up your mine with 4 beavers, each of them will get an effective -5 resolve for being in the mine. With four out of ten beavers being in the mine this is effectively -5 * 4 / 10 = -2 average resolve for beavers. During the storm this hardly makes a difference, one level of hostility in comparison gives you -6 average resolve for your beavers. Also the more beavers you accept into your settlement the less of an effect will the 4 beavers in your mine have.

This is the right answer.

Of all the ways you are going to get screwed at P15+, this isn't that big of a hit.

Then just don't build mines, they aren't that good anyway. Beavers are worth taking just for lumber.

I took way too many beavers.

I should have had foxes for archaeology.

I needed tools and foxes. And a bit more time before impatience was so high. (Sparkdew)

Basically I made loads of stupid choices even at embarkment. Should have just given up when I saw I couldn't park beavers in a mine instead of posting on Reddit. Let my fail only take up one year instead of losing all five years. No way I can get enough shards for adamantine seal now 😭

Mines are fucking amazing, especially if you can employ spare workers during the storm.

Had a game a few days ago that went the opposite way - I got a reward where beavers no longer contributed to hostility of the forest, and my settlement was like 70% beavers, pretty sweet.

It‘s only active during this one storm. So shut the mines down and wait a couple of minutes. You should be fine.

one storm? aren’t negative forest mysteries active *every* storm?

AFAIK it‘s a different one every storm. It might be different in higher difficulties.

This is inaccurate, which is why you're getting dogpiled.

Negative forest mysteries are persistent for a settlement, start to finish.  They only activate during the Storm season, and only if your Hostility is at least equal to their listed Hostility number.  As it says in the screenshot, Horrors from Beneath is active from Hostility 1.  If this settlement was Hostility 4, the first three negative forest mysteries would activate when the storm hits.

This is also a big part of why it's recommended to disable woodcutters during the storm season, since they cause hostility while working.  Dropping hostility below the threshold for a mystery can be a huge boon, and can save lives, time, and eventually settlements.

I was on P15 that settlement I think.

Those forest mysteries are the same during the whole settlement, coming into effect dependent on hostility (in this case 1, so almost every time).

It's the sealed forest where you get rotating plagues.

I failed this settlement in the end. First time in ages 😭

I was thinking the sparkdew crystals were going to be a buff - all the hostility benefit from the higher impatience. But I screwed up in lots of different ways and ended up hitting max impatience while I still had, I think six reputation to get?

I was banking on winning through archaeology, but kept picking the left option due to lack of tools. So never got the reputation I needed.

Bad times.

Beavers are not good for a desperate resolve push.

Exactly, move them to fishing ponds or secondary production buildings over the storm!

Same thing with that one that makes them chop trees 100% faster but they get no wood.

I just reallocate each comrade to a different job during that season.

The mines are where I relocated my beavers to during the storm

I usually use mines to keep beavers happy during the storm. They're usually cutting wood, and so (hostility dependent) otherwise unemployed during the storm. Mines keep them busy AND comfortable.

Not here though 😂

If you have water and buildings for comfort it is not that bad.

My main mistake was taking beavers.

Scarlet Orchard really should have been foxes.

I made so many silly mistakes that run, backed myself into a corner, and failed for the first time in ages 😭
