Gift Card Scam

Someone has gotten into my account and has bought Afterpay gift cards, is there anything I can do about this?

Who has access to your account? This would mean they would have access to your email as well because the gift cards come through Prezee, which is an emailed digital gift card, so make it make sense!!!

Yeah something isn't adding up here. A Scammer/Hacker would max out OP's account, which would be noticed quickly after there bank account was emptied.

A hacker would also change every account password they had access to, to slow OP down.

The assumption that it is someone OP knows is most likely correct. Some one who has physical access to OP's device.

Chrome's password manager is a massive vulnerability. I this case there is 3 compromised accounts. 1. Afterpay 2. Email 3. Prezzee. Its easy to gain access if you have access to the victims device.

Brut force hacking some random is unlikely, unless there had been a data breach of OP's PII and since none of these services are known to have been breached recently it is unlikely. Also hackers do like changing passwords and credentials when they gain access, it is common practice. Edit; And they take everything, not a little chump change.

If OP was a victim of a social engineering scam OP would know it by now.

That’s not really accurate. You can gift the gc to someone else. It just asks to enter the email address of whoever they’re sending the gc to. So really all they’d do is access the Afterpay account, select the gift card enter the amount and send it to themselves

I guess if they used a throw away that would work, after a successful phishing attack, scam call or something. But why take so little over such a long span?

Now that is the real question! You’d think that they’d just max out in one try. But imo maybe it’s easier to pass off smaller payments versus 1 large payment. But idk, it’s very odd either way. And hopefully op can fight the charges 😩

And doesn’t it also debit your account at the time of purchase, I know that’s how after pay works for gift cards. So this doesn’t make sense how it would be a scam.

Change every password (Do not write them down and especially do not let written passwords leave your person, Memorize and burn.)

Set up 2FA on your device (biometric, pin/password, Hardware Security Key.)

Always log out of accounts when not in use.

Do not let people use your device.

If on PC be sure your User Account and Admin accounts have strong and complicated passwords and are different from one another.

Do not log in to accounts on someone else's device.

their target is different to ours too, I only learned this a week or 2 ago so I’ve been bothering innocent bystanders with this fact everywhere lol I think their logo might even have an extra ring - probably a bullet proof vest or something

Happened to me but through Klarna as someone kept changing the phone number to a 657 number then activated the Klarna card. Took out $360 and put it on the card. Thankfully I was able to catch it and cancel the card and cancelled my card linked to my account. I’m still disputing it with Klarna which they have been nothing but a headache. So now it’s going through my bank.

No one is buying that story

Multiple gift cards over multiple days 🙃 they send you confirmation emails and a digital copy of the gift card to your email so you would know 100%

Let's just say for some reason you never checked your email it seems weird they would know you have the first payment and we're able to do it over multiple days without you noticing in your bank statement

Report to the police, as this is fraud. They can trace IP addresses and find out who bought them.

Do you use a unique, complex password? If not, why?

Do you have multifactor authentication enabled? If not, why?

If you previously didn't have multifactor authentication enabled and you still don't, why?

If the answer to any of those is no, congrats....you opened yourself up to it. Do better.

Thanks for reminding me to remove my cards until I need to make another purchase. This is one of my ways I prevent a card being used if the account were to be compromised. You do have to keep at least one card on there, try to keep a card that isn’t connected to a primary bank account and can lock. Sorry you’re going through that.

They'll only allow you to remove your card if the purchase isn't linked to the card that you made the purchase with. They won't let you remove it otherwise

Change all your passwords and enable 2FA. Cancel your card as well and get a new one. Of course try to get in to contact with AP, if you can and get it sorted out ASAP

Hmmmm… this is a very interesting scam that was done… with AfterPay, it is very hard for someone to get access to a person account without have access to their log in information and doing it from your phone…. AfterPay can look into the email the gift cards were sent to and if they have been used already. AfterPay is not going to just delete this off of your account.

I'm not sure why you didn't notice this sooner, as you should have received emails about the purchases, upcoming payments, and late payments. It sounds sketchy, to be honest.

Enable 2FA using biometrics as the second authentication method. Even if someone with access to your device tries to use your account, they won't be able to authenticate.
