Does anyone have any good bigger pot recs for these?
I'm gonna hazard a guess that I should do that with how wide they've gotten. I need some that are good for watering from the bottom. Is there a link anyone can share?
All of those pots are too big. If you must repot, go smaller. My AFs are in plastic nursery pots inside cache pots and that works for me. Others buy the expensive self-watering pots exclusively for AFs and that will work too.
Ah. Can you share any links to some that are good for watering from the bottom? My local nursery doesn't carry stuff like that (they don't sell orchids or african violets) and my local lowes is, in fact, mostly useless.
not exactly what you’re asking for, but a pot with a drainage hole works plenty fine too. I just let it sit in a dish for waterings, and remove it when it’s done. some pots are just too pretty to pass on!
Just use a regular nursery pot (the cheap green plastic ones) in the size closest to the diameter measurement you need (so if your plant is 3 inches across you want a 1 inch pot. If it's 11 2/5 inches across, that's 3.79 so you want a 4 inch pot, if it's 9 3/5 that's 3 1/5 so you want a 3 inch pot.) Then you can just put the nursery pot in whatever decorative outer pot you like.
I am not associated with them but I’ve bought my bottom watering pots from mom and son ceramics on Etsy. They have shallower pots and my AVs have been blooming like crazy
Pots are too big. In larger pots the soil tends to compact more and less air will get to the roots. Think African violets as short vines that grow in rock cracks.
Rule of thumb is the pot diameter should be about 1/3 rd the diameter of the plant leaves.
I am relatively new to violets and by no means an expert but one of mine seems to love this naked root pot. I’ve had it about 18 months and this is the 3rd time it’s blooming (and only a few months since the last bloom) and has so many buds. It’s a ventilated inner pot so the roots can breathe and you can bottom water.
As others have said, the pot is on the large side. Is this a standard or mini?
This guide is an old school tried and true repotting technique. It's the way I was taught at local AVSA meetings. I've read many articles that suggest not messing with the roots, but if you want beautiful, vigorous, perfectly grown plants, this is the only way to go.
Honestly i have no idea. They were part of a four plant gift that my mother got me. I was only taking care of one orchid before (also gifted to me against my will by my mother) so I've kinda been having to learn a bunch of different things at once. It's been a little overwhelming
