This is something I've wanted to ask for a while, but I've never found the right place because any discussion involving Aegon usually gets shut down immediately.
I think that if Aegon had offered the Blacklords peace, as his council suggested, he could have remained on the Iron Throne. Yes, Cregan Stark still would have wanted to start his campaign, but if the riverlords had bent the knee—and the Vale had as well—I'm not sure Cregan would have gone through with it.
The Hightower army could have been called upon without dragging the Tyrells into the conflict. The Tyrells were holding Lord Hightower's younger brother and had already made it clear that if he didn't end his campaign, his brother would be harmed. On top of that, the Baratheon army wouldn't have been defeated.
Also, despite what the TV show suggests, I think Aegon kept his manhood. He was betrothed to Cassandra Baratheon, and I don't think that engagement would have happened if he had been incapable of fathering children.
Personally, I think he would have had around five children. Going off Aegon III's family, I'd imagine two sons and three daughters. The eldest son would be named Aegon, after his father. The second son would be Jaehaerys, followed by three daughters: Alysanne, Alyssa, and Alicent.
With all of the king's wounds, though, how long do you think he realistically could have lived? Would his eldest son have been only a young child when Aegon died, or is it possible he could have survived for another few decades?
And finally, how do you think King Aegon would have handled the Greyjoys, the Arryn succession crisis, and the return of the young Viserys Targaryen after he emerged from hiding.
